Arterial cystic disease (ACD) affecting the popliteal artery (PA) is a rare form of non-atherosclerotic vascular disease. This cystic tumor is defined by the accumulation of a mucinous substance in the adventitia. Treatment options include percutaneous cyst aspiration, percutaneous transluminal balloon angioplasty, the evacuation of the cyst through a surgical approach, and resection of the affected artery segment followed by arterial reconstruction using autologous venous or prosthetic grafting. Our hospital received a 36-year-old man who had an intermittent claudication and periodically noct

BACKGROUND: Ruptured popliteal artery aneurysm (rPAA) is a rare event that represents 2.5% of operated cases of popliteal artery aneurysms (PAA). Many patients present with unilateral leg pain and swelling, therefore often get referred through a variety of pathways, such as deep venous thrombosis (DVT) clinic. We aim to evaluate the relationship between the initial diagnosis pathway of rPAA and its influence on outcomes, including limb loss and mortality.
METHODS: Patients who were referred to vascular surgery and had a final diagnosis of rPAA between 2007 and 2023 were reviewed. Data related

Ganglion cysts are commonly encountered benign lesions, primarily localized near the wrist and hand but occasionally observed in the lower extremities. These cysts, characterized by their encapsulation in dense connective tissue, typically present with minimal symptoms, albeit occasionally causing discomfort or limited mobility. Herein, a unique case of a ganglion cyst in the posterior distal lower extremity is presented, located near the popliteal neurovascular structures and without any connection to the knee joint. Given the critical proximity to neurovascular structures and the patient's m

INTRODUCTION: Tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT), previously referred to as pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS), is a rare, locally aggressive proliferative disorder of the synovium. It typically affects large joints, most commonly the knee. Posterior compartment involvement in the knee is less common compared to anterior or suprapatellar involvement, and it presents unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to the complex anatomy and proximity to neurovascular structures. While popliteal (Baker's) cysts may coexist with intra-articular TGCT, they are considered synovial herniatio

OBJECTIVES: Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is characterised by inflammatory pain of shoulders and the pelvic girdle that affects older people. Conditions that can mimic PMR include rheumatoid arthritis (RA), spondyloarthritis (SpA) and calcium pyrophosphate disease (CPPD). In this study, we aimed to define the prevalence of CPPD among patients with polymyalgic syndrome with suspected PMR according to recent ACR/EULAR criteria.
METHODS: This was an observational study in which we included patients with polymyalgic syndrome (inflammatory pain of shoulders, elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) level,

In planning total knee arthroplasty (TKA), preoperative radiographs may show calcific bodies in the posterior soft tissues of the knee. We describe a technique in which they can be removed without making a separate skin incision during TKA after femoral and tibial bone resection. This technique involves probing the posteromedial capsule with a clamp to identify the opening to a popliteal cyst. Once identified, the opening is tensioned and incised to allow removal of the loose bodies. If retained, these loose bodies can be a source of patient dissatisfaction, particularly since they are sometim

INTRODUCTION: Bakers (popliteal) cysts are cystic masses that arise from bursae swellings filled with synovial fluid. It is assumed that preceding osteoarthritic or meniscal injuries cause the synovial fluid to extrude and concentrate, forming a gel-like material within a cyst. Clinical presentation is either symptomatic or asymptomatic swelling. The following symptoms are commonly associated with this condition: Knee pain, stiffness, and limited knee range of motion. Based on symptomatology and etiology, the management plan can be divided into conservative versus surgical intervention, by eit

Cystic adventitial disease is a rare cause of calf claudication and is characterized by the development of a mucinous, cystic mass within the outer layer (adventitia) of an artery. The popliteal artery is most commonly affected. Several theories and hypotheses exist regarding the aetiology of this disorder with no clear unifying cause accepted in the literature to date. We describe a case of a 32-year-old female with a one-year history of medial right knee pain and intermittent claudication who was diagnosed with a medial meniscal tear and a large parameniscal cyst communicating with the popli

Adventitial cystic disease (ACD) of the popliteal artery is a rare disease that can cause intermittent claudication, and most cases show cysts located in the adventitia. We report a rare case with a cyst localized in the media and a dissection. The patient presented to the hospital with sudden-onset right lower limb pain. A lower limb ultrasound revealed an iso-echoic lesion in the right popliteal artery, leading to an initial diagnosis of thrombotic occlusion and subsequent thrombectomy. However, intravascular ultrasound suggested the lesion was outside the intima, and magnetic resonance imag

Knee cysts are a common finding in orthopedic practice, with diagnoses that range from benign fluid collections to more complex lesions requiring intervention. This comprehensive review explores the types of cysts around the knee, including popliteal (Baker's) cysts, meniscal cysts, proximal tibiofibular joint cysts, and ganglion cysts within the cruciate ligaments. The review highlights the mechanisms of formation, clinical presentations, diagnostic methods, differential diagnoses, and treatments for each cyst type. Imaging, particularly MRI, plays a critical role in accurate diagnosis, helpi

BACKGROUND: Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is a rare vascular condition that causes arterial stenosis due to the presence of a cyst in the adventitia (outer layer) of the artery. It is most commonly seen in young and middle-aged men, with an occurrence rate of around 0.1% among vascular diseases. Symptoms may include intermittent claudication, rest pain, and, in severe cases, ulcers or limb ischemia. CAD is often underdiagnosed due to its rarity and the broad range of differential diagnoses for arterial obstruction.

Cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery is an uncommon vascular condition that can manifest as intermittent claudication, particularly in active individuals without typical atherosclerotic risk factors. We report the case of a 50-year-old male presenting with a 2-year history of progressive right leg pain, triggered by prolonged walking and knee flexion, yet notably absent during cycling activities. Clinical examination revealed diminished distal pulses in the right leg. A Doppler-based treadmill test indicated a significant post-exercise drop in ankle pressures on the right side. U

Popliteal cysts are common lesions, primarily characterized by soft tissue swelling, which may occasionally present with calcifications or small osteochondromas, and can rarely lead to restricted movement. We report a case involving a spherical coral-like synovial chondroma located within a popliteal cyst, which caused significant pain and limited the flexion and extension of the knee joint. Notably, the appearance of the synovial chondroma was strikingly similar to that of spherical coral, and its distinctive imaging features are previously unreported in the literature. Following the excision

ABSTRACT: This study describes an arthroscopic technique for popliteal cyst excision and reports preliminary outcomes data. We retrospectively identified patients with symptomatic popliteal cysts who underwent popliteal cyst excision at our institution between 2013 and 2020. Arthroscopic popliteal cyst excision was performed using dual posteromedial portals, expansion of the valvular mechanism, and cyst wall resection. International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scores were collected preoperatively and at follow-up. We calculated the proportions of patients meeting Patient Acceptable Sym

Baker's cysts are fluid-filled swellings in the popliteal fossa commonly associated with degenerative and inflammatory joint diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as well as with joint injuries. While they are usually small and asymptomatic, in rare cases, they can enlarge significantly and cause clinically relevant complications. We describe the case of a 69-year-old man with an undiagnosed RA who presented at his first Internal Medicine consultation with a five-week history of progressive swelling in the left popliteal region extending to the mid-calf, accompanied by pain on movemen
