Baker's cysts are usually an indolent pathology that is managed nonoperatively, with intervention reserved for rare patients with compressive symptoms. We present a patient with a Baker's cyst that led to disabling claudication requiring vascular surgical intervention. Initially, an endovascular approach was undertaken; however, the patient experienced early stent failure from the Baker's cyst's mechanical compressive effects necessitating open revascularization. This case highlights Baker's cysts as a rare source of claudication and emphasizes favorability of prompt open revascularization rat

INTRODUCTION: Bone wax is a haemostatic agent, widely used to prevent bleeding from bone surfaces. Despite its effectiveness in haemostatic control, it can lead to foreign body granuloma and osteolysis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the rate and progress of osteolysis after surgical bone wax application.
METHODS: We included 425 patients between 01/2002 and 12/2006 that underwent offset correction for cam type femoroacetabular impingement with application of bone wax for homogeneous statistical cohort formation. Comparison was made to a similar cohort group undergoing offset

Necrotic enteritis, caused by Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is a disease present worldwide and causes major economic losses. The re-emergence of the disease, in recent years, is mainly due to the ban of the usage of antibiotics as growth promoters in the EU. The aim of this study was to establish a reliable, robust challenge model. Ross hybrid broilers were divided into randomized groups: a positive and a negative control group, a group receiving antibiotic treatment and three groups fed with assorted feed supplements, all receiving the same basal diet. The birds in the treatment gr

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tears (RCTs) commonly cause shoulder pain and functional impairment in middle-aged and elderly individuals. Despite their varying clinical presentations, the mechanisms underlying pain development and exacerbation in RCT remain poorly understood. The relationship between increased blood flow around the shoulder joint and pain has recently attracted increasing attention. Dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been established as an imaging study for assessing local hemodynamics in various fields, and we utilized this technique to evaluate hemodynamic changes in th

OBJECTIVE: The presence of popliteal cysts is common, although often unkown to the patient. When spontaneous rupture occurs, the clinical presentation is typically dramatic, frequently prompting the patient to seek emergency care. Eventually the condition can be mistaken for other pathologies, more commonly deep vein thrombosis, leading to inappropriate treatment. The objective of this study is to describe a case series of spontaneous Baker's cyst ruptures, with a 2-year follow-up.
METHODS: Sixteen consecutive patients with symptomatic ruptured popliteal cyst were treated acutely with anti-in

ABSTRACT: The Morel-Lavallée lesion (MLL) is a rare closed degloving injury resulting from traumatic shearing forces that separate subcutaneous tissue from underlying fascia, creating a cavity filled with blood, lymph, and inflammatory exudate. Typically occurring in regions where skin can glide significantly over rigid structures, such as the thigh, MLLs present as fluctuant, boggy, sometimes painful lesions, which result from disrupted lymphatic and vascular structures. The lesion evolves through an inflammatory cascade leading to eventual encapsulation by dense fibrotic tissue. While the di

BACKGROUND: Elbow disorders are a common cause of pain and functional impairment in the adult population, yet there is a lack of comprehensive epidemiological studies describing their distribution. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing the epidemiology of elbow complaints in a specialized orthopedic clinic.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence, age distribution, and sex-related differences of the most common elbow disorders in an outpatient orthopedic setting.
METHODS: A single-center cross-sectional study of medical records from patients treated between 2015 and 2024. Adults of both

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular corticosteroid injection and suprascapular nerve block are both options for nonoperative management of adhesive capsulitis. While numerous studies support the benefits of steroid injections, the use of suprascapular nerve blocks is less established. Published randomized trials comparing steroid injections and suprascapular nerve blocks for managing adhesive capsulitis have reported mixed results. This study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of published level I studies to compare outcomes for patients with adhesive capsulitis following intra-art

A 63-year-old female presented with acute, atraumatic posterior elbow pain. She was found to have infectious olecranon bursitis with resistant bacteria. Her treatment was complicated by a penicillin allergy, necessitating the use of linezolid, which was further complicated by the rare black hairy tongue (BHT) side effect of linezolid. Despite the visible discoloration and associated pain from BHT, the patient continued linezolid to treat her bursal infection. She recovered from the bursitis and linezolid side effects after completion, supporting that immediate withdrawal is not necessary for t

Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder is a common condition in which calcium hydroxyapatite crystals form within the rotator cuff tendons, most often the supraspinatus. As a sequela of this condition, long-term discomfort may develop with intermittent acute flares. Symptoms can also arise suddenly, causing intense pain and limited shoulder motion. These effects are often reflected in patient-reported outcome measures, for example, overall limitations in upper-extremity function and overhead activity. During flares, symptoms can mimic septic arthritis. This occurs on clinical exams and imaging. A

A 51-year-old male presented with right knee swelling with persistent pain for the past two weeks. Radiograph of the knee showed no bone abnormalities. Bursectomy was performed and the aspirated fluid was sent for laboratory analysis. Gram staining revealed fungal filaments, and culture on Sabouraud's dextrose agar yielded blackish-brown pigmented fungal colonies. Histopathological examination showed slender, septate hyphae. PCR sequencing identified Paraconiothyrium estuarinum as the causative agent. The patient was treated with itraconazole for 3 months with regular follow-up, resulting in c

Tophaceous gout is a chronic sequela of hyperuricemia, typically and predominantly affecting peripheral joints. However, isolated elbow involvement of the olecranon with a large tophaceous ulcer is uncommon. We report a rare case of chronic tophaceous olecranon bursopathy in a 48-year-old male patient with poorly controlled hyperuricemia, highlighting the diagnostic, imaging, and surgical aspects of this condition. The histopathological examination confirmed the presence of urate crystal tophi devoid of any malignant features.

BACKGROUND: The sensitivity of MRI in detecting joint inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis is well known but its specificity is less discussed. It is important to prevent false positive results and consequent overdiagnosis. Therefore, we aimed to examine MRI-detected inflammation that is less specific for rheumatoid arthritis by evaluating the frequencies of inflammation in healthy controls and in two at-risk groups who have not developed rheumatoid arthritis, compared with patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
METHODS: In this cohort study, we performed contrast-enhanced MRIs of the second to

Baastrup's disease is a degenerative condition characterized by the close approximation of adjacent spinous processes. Interspinous bursal cysts may extend into the epidural space, resulting in symptomatic central canal stenosis. Lumbar multiple spondylolysis, characterized by defects in more than one lumbar lamina, is a rare condition often associated with trauma or repetitive stress. This case report presents a 56-year-old male plumber who presented with low back pain and bilateral leg numbness. He had intermittent claudication at 500 m. Imaging revealed L4 spondylolytic spondylolisthesis, L

Hamstring injuries are a common injury sustained by athletes with most injuries occurring as strain injuries within the muscle belly or at the proximal musculotendinous junction. Distal hamstring pathology is relatively uncommon but comprises a collection of both acute and chronic diagnoses that can manifest with symptoms either on the medial or lateral side of the knee based on which hamstring tendons are involved. Pes anserinus bursitis is the most common of these distal hamstring pathologies with other chronic diagnoses, including snapping medial hamstrings or snapping biceps femoris. Acute

IMPORTANCE: Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) is a chronic condition commonly defined as pain in the lateral hip joint that can be severely limiting to activities of daily living, sleep, and overall quality of life. It encompasses numerous disease states causing pain in the region of the greater trochanter of the femur. Noninvasive management approaches for GTPS include corticosteroid injections and physiotherapy, preferred as first-line interventions prior to surgical interventions. Understanding the impact of randomized control trials (RCTs) can enhance the understanding of treatment

BACKGROUND: Restoring vascular continuity is crucial in digital replantation when direct anastomosis is not possible. Although autologous vein grafts are standard, they pose technical challenges and donor-site morbidity. This study evaluated the short-term patency and histopathological response of inexpensive and readily available polyurethane peripheral venous catheters (PPVC) grafts in a rat femoral artery model.
METHODS: Twenty male Wistar Albino rats were randomly divided into 2 groups: PPVC graft (n = 10) and autologous vein graft (n = 10). A 5-mm femoral artery defect was repaired with

Background/Objectives: Tendinopathy is the preferred term to describe various tendon pathologies, including paratendinitis, tendinitis, and tendinosis, in the absence of histopathological evidence in biopsy specimens. The management of tendinopathies is challenging; rest, physiotherapy (such as eccentric training), injections, shock waves, orthotics, medical therapy, and surgery are the main therapeutic options offered to the patient. The conservative treatment of tendinopathies is still difficult, but several options have been proposed, including the use of anti-inflammatory molecules. In thi
