Abnormalities of the reproductive tract of female sheep were studied by examining 9970 reproductive tracts from cull ewes and 23,536 tracts from nulliparous sheep (prime lambs) over a period of 12 months in abattoirs in south-west England. Overall, 3.37 per cent of the tracts were pregnant (8.11 per cent of cull ewes, and 1.36 per cent of nulliparous sheep), with a peak incidence between September and December. A total of 655 ewes (6.57 per cent) and 459 nulliparous sheep (1.95 per cent) had acquired abnormalities of the reproductive tract. Within these totals, abnormalities of the ovaries acc

A 49 year old patient was admitted with fever and jaundice. Laboratory evaluation showed leukocytosis, elevated values for C-reactive protein, transaminases, bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase. Ultrasound and subsequent CT-scan revealed multiple liver lesions and a liquid mass in the bursa omentalis. A CT-guided catheter-drainage was performed and streptococcus milleri isolated from the abscess and one blood culture. After empiric broad spectrum treatment with Piperacillin/Tazobactam (Tazobac) and Netilmicin (Netromycin), Ceftriaxon (Rocephin) was given for a total treatment time of 10 days. F

Synovial cysts are far less common at the hip than at the knee and usually occur in patients whose hip cavity communicates with the iliopsoas bursa. We report 12 cases of enlargement of the iliopsoas bursa, nine men and three women, with a mean age of 48 years. The six patients with septic bursitis had severe symptoms similar to those seen in septic arthritis of the hip. Chronic pain with or without a palpable inguinal swelling was the main symptom in the six remaining patients, some of whom had compression of neighboring structures making the diagnosis more difficult. Ultrasonography is the b

BACKGROUND: An experimental study was planned to evaluate the effect of bile alone and bile in combination with gallstones on intraperitoneal adhesion and abscess formation in the peritoneal cavity of the rat.
METHODS: One hundred Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to ten groups (n: 10). Groups 1-3 received a 1-ml intraperitoneal injection of saline, sterile bile, and infected bile. Groups 4-10 underwent a lower 5-mm midline abdominal incision. In groups 5, 7, and 9, a single gallstone (3-mm diameter) was placed in the right upper quadrant and injected with sterile saline, sterile bile, and in

The following case is presented to illustrate the necessity of arthrotomy of the hip when an iliopsoas abscess lies adjacent to the hip joint capsule. Arthrotomy of the hip through a separate incision adds minimal morbidity, does not expose the hip to the abscess, and assures the surgeon that the hip has been debrided. This is important considering the 15% incidence of communication of the iliopsoas bursa with the hip joint.

A 59-year-old patient underwent endoscopic carpal tunnel release by Chow's two-portal technique. He developed a pyogenic tenosynovitis and an infection within the ulnar and radial bursae, an abscess in the middle palmar, thenar and Parona's space, and a pyogenic wrist arthritis. Surgical treatment included a wide exposure of the infected region, débridement, irrigation, application of a resorbable collagen sponge containing gentamicin, insertion of two drains and primary wound closure. The infection was brought under control and hand function restored.

The earliest images of medicine and surgery in Western art are from the late Middle Ages. Although often attractive, at that time they were illustrative and mirrored the text on how to diagnose or treat a specific condition. These drawings in medieval manuscripts represent management of abscesses, perianal infection and fistulas, amputation, and wound dressings. With the Renaissance, art in all its forms flourished, and surgeons were represented at work draining carbuncles, infected bursae, and mastoiditis; managing ulcers, scrofula, and skin infections; and performing amputations. PURPOSE: To describe imaging features of tuberculous tenosynovitis and bursitis with various imaging methods.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients with surgically and/or pathologically proved tuberculosis of the tendon sheaths or bursae were evaluated. Routine radiography, arthrography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging were used in some or all of the patients.
RESULTS: Twelve patients had tuberculous tenosynovitis, and nine had bursitis. Tuberculous tenosynovitis most commonly involved the tendon sheaths of the hand and wrist, whereas bursitis occurred most

Tornwaldt's disease was first described by Tornwaldt as one of the causes of epipharyngitis, and is an inflammation or abscess of the embryonic remnant cyst of the pharyngeal bursa appearing at the posterior median wall of the nasopharynx. Although many cases are symptom-free, symptoms can often be caused by nasal tamponade, trauma, adenotomy, or other mechanical stimuli. Only a few cases have been reported in Japan between 1929 and 1992. At about the 10th week of embryonic development, the pouch, which forms by adhesion of the pharyngeal ectoderm to the notochord at the most cranial end of th

Thirty cases of glenohumeral pyarthrosis are reported. Systemic immune compromise and local tissue abnormalities were each present in 74% of the adult patients. Both were present in 52%. Most adult patients were debilitated by chronic diseases. Diagnosis was frequently delayed due to mild symptoms and minimal, nonspecific laboratory findings. Poor results correlated with treatment delay. Shoulder pyarthrosis occurred ipsilateral to forearm arteriovenous dialysis fistulas in four patients. Postoperative shoulder pyarthroses were eradicated only in patients with clinically intact immune systems.

During a prolonged hospital stay, left hip pain developed in a woman with sickle cell disease and bilateral hip prostheses. In-111 labeled WBC scintigraphy supplemented by Tc-99m SC bone marrow imaging demonstrated abnormal WBC accumulation surrounding the left greater trochanter. Results of surgical exploration showed an abscess involving the pseudocapsule, trochanteric bursa, and periprosthetic cement column. Cultures grew Clostridium difficile, an unusual pathogen in this site.

Four subacromial/subdeltoid bursa abscesses were treated in four patients with systemic illnesses. The symptoms and signs of abscesses were minimal in all four patients. In three patients who were chronically ill and debilitated, diagnosis was established only after subacromial space abscesses were encountered during incision and drainage of the glenohumeral or acromioclavicular joint. In these three patients, the subacromial bursa abscesses coexisted with clinically diagnosed mild or resolving shoulder pyarthrosis. All had intact rotator cuffs. The subacromial/subdeltoid space should be evalu

Between 1984 and 1990, 172 plantar incisions were used in 137 patients. Eighty-nine of these patients returned for a personal interview and examination, twenty-six were interviewed by telephone, and twenty-two were lost to follow-up. Of the eighty-nine patients (124 incisions) who returned for follow-up examination at an average of twenty-five months (range, six to seventy-seven months), eighty-five (96 per cent) were pleased with the result of the plantar incision. None of these patients had altered their activities, and only three had modified their selection of footwear. Of the twenty-six p

We are reporting on a dorsolateral access left to the bursa omentalis and to the left subphrenium carried out in order to relieve infectious processes in this region. The access has proved a success above all in the later postoperative period, e.g. when the protecting conglutinations towards ventral isolate the process from the abdominal cavity. At the lying patient this access allows the drainage of the exsudation over the deepest point. The results of 23 surgical interventions are being demonstrated with references to possible complications caused by the intervention.

Septic ischial bursitis is described in 4 patients with spinal cord injury. In these patients a pre-existing ischial bursitis probably became secondarily infected. Because these patients lack sensation, diagnosis may be difficult. The disease process in one patient with a prolonged fever was only recognized after a leucocyte scan detected an abscess extending to the thigh. At surgery it was found that the infection extended from the ischial bursa to the upper lateral thigh. Infection in these patients was due to beta hemolytic streptococcus, S. aureus, and S. epidermidis. The patients all resp

Seven psoas bursae filled with purulent fluid and inspissated debris were revealed at revision operations for failed resurfacing hip arthroplasties, an incidence of 5.8% in such revisions. Histological and microbiological investigations demonstrated that the psoas bursa collections resulted from the tissue response to polyethylene wear debris. None was due to infection.

This paper reports on a patient who was treated by percutaneous aspiration, instillation of a sclerosant (polidocanol) and cystogastric drainage for a post-acute pancreatic pseudocyst. Five weeks after admission to hospital for the first episode of an acute necrotizing pancreatitis, the 60-year-old man underwent a percutaneous, ultrasound-guided puncture and aspiration of a voluminous pancreatic pseudocyst. Ten days later, recurrent fluid collection led to a second puncture, combined with the injection of polidocanol (15 ml; 1%) into the cyst cavity. Since this treatment failed, a percutaneous
