BACKGROUND: Frozen shoulder is a disabling condition characterised by severe pain and loss of shoulder movement and may affect up to 5% of the population. Qualitative research documents debilitating pain and how treatment to reduce pain is a priority for people diagnosed with frozen shoulder. Corticosteroid injections are a principal treatment to reduce the pain of frozen shoulder, however little is known about the patient experience.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to address this gap in the knowledge by exploring the lived experience of people with frozen shoulder who have undergone an injectio

We report an unusual case of acute septic olecranon bursitis, with probable olecranon osteomyelitis, where the only organism isolated in culture was initially considered a contaminant, Cutibacterium acnes. However, we ultimately considered it the likely causal organism when treatment for most of the other more likely organisms failed. This typically indolent organism is prevalent in pilosebaceous glands, which are scarce in the posterior elbow region. This case illustrates the often challenging empirical management of a musculoskeletal infection when the only organism isolated might be a conta

Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) is a prolonged episode of shoulder dysfunction that commences within 24 to 48 hours of a vaccination. Symptoms include a combination of shoulder pain, stiffness, and weakness. There has been a recent rapid increase in reported cases of SIRVA within the literature, particularly in adults, and is likely related to the mass vaccination programmes associated with COVID-19 and influenza. The pathophysiology is not certain, but placement of the vaccination in the subdeltoid bursa or other pericapsular tissue has been suggested to result in an

Soft tissue and osseous musculoskeletal infections are common but can be difficult to diagnose clinically. Signs, symptoms, and physical examination findings may be nonspecific, and laboratory values can be inconclusive. The extent of disease may also be underestimated on physical examination. Soft tissue infections most commonly occur secondary to direct inoculation from broken skin and less frequently due to the seeding of the soft tissues from hematogenous spread, while osseous infections are more commonly due to hematogenous seeding. Infections may also be iatrogenic, following surgery or

OBJECTIVE: Olecranon bursitis (OB), characterized by inflammation and fluid collection in the olecranon bursa is a commonly encountered out-patient condition. The data is heterogeneous regarding a stepwise and standardized approach to aseptic OB treatment and the efficacy of intra-bursal corticosteroid injections (CSI). The objective of this review is to systematically evaluate the non-surgical treatment options for aseptic OB.
METHODS: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA recommendations. The English and non-English literature search was performed in 5 medical datab

BACKGROUND: Necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) is a chronic granulomatous dermatosis usually affecting the lower limbs, although less common sites have been described. Herein we report a series of cases of NL located on the elbow, with an unusual presentation and occurring after trauma or surgery.
OBSERVATIONS: Our series includes three men and one woman, with a mean age of 64 years. Three had undergone surgery for elbow bursitis and one had had trauma after a fall from a horse, with exposure of subcutaneous tissue prior to healing. Within 5 years, they had all developed an atrophic erythematous annu

Diagnosing buttock pain is a challenge due to complex anatomy and multiple causes. Potential pathologies range from common and benign to rare and life-threatening. Common causes for buttock pain include referred pain from the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joint, hamstring origin tendinopathy, myofascial pain, ischiogluteal bursitis, gluteal pathology, and piriformis syndrome. Rarer causes include malignancy, bone infection, vascular anomalies, and spondyloarthropathies. Other conditions may be present concurrently in the lumbar and gluteal area, which can cloud the clinical picture. Correct diag

Staphylococcus aureus is a cause of life-threatening gram-positive bacteremia and the most common causative organism of septic bursitis. Although there are several case reports of infective endocarditis complicated with septic bursitis and other rheumatic complications, there are very few cases reports of septic bursitis leading to infective endocarditis (IE). We present a patient with a history of recurrent prepatellar bursitis requiring catheter drainage, who presented with sepsis and IE.

Brucellosis, a bacterial infection caused by Brucella spp., is a widespread zoonosis concerning human and animal health. In equines, brucellosis may occur asymptomatically or with clinical signs such as arthritis, bursitis, and tenosynovitis. This study aims to ascertain the overall seroprevalence of equine brucellosis and its related factors, including geographic region, serological detection method, equine's species, gender, age, and body condition. This is because equine brucellosis is a zoonotic infection with significant epidemiological implications. The systematic literature search was c

Acute calcific periarthritis (ACP) is a self-limiting, monoarticular, peri-articular process of dystrophic mineral deposition and adjacent inflammation. Patients present with a sudden onset of pain, localised swelling, erythema, tenderness and restricted range of motion. Symptoms reduce in severity within 4-7 days and self resolve in 3-4 weeks. ACP is commonly misdiagnosed, in particular, as infective or inflammatory pathologies such as septic arthritis and gout. This condition has specific imaging findings which allows differentiation from other disorders when combined with the clinical prese

OBJECTIVE: The global fight against COVID-19 has required mass vaccination clinics as well as mass recruitment of personnel, including many who may not regularly administer intramuscular deltoid immunizations, potentially increasing the incidence of improper intramuscular injection. Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) is a well-described, preventable injury resulting from improper injection into anatomic structures adjacent to the deltoid muscle leading to mechanical and chemical trauma augmented by an inflammatory immune response to the vaccine and/or adjuvants. SIRVA is

Frozen shoulder is a common debilitating disorder characterized by shoulder pain and progressive loss of shoulder movement. Frozen shoulder is frequently associated with other systemic conditions or occurs following periods of immobilization, and has a protracted clinical course, which can be frustrating for patients as well as health-care professionals. Frozen shoulder is characterized by fibroproliferative tissue fibrosis, whereby fibroblasts, producing predominantly type I and type III collagen, transform into myofibroblasts (a smooth muscle phenotype), which is accompanied by inflammation,

BACKGROUND: Multiple rice bodies in the wrist is a rare disorder that requires surgery, and there are still many uncertainties regarding its diagnosis and treatment.
CASE SUMMARY: We described a rare case of chronic idiopathic tenosynovitis with rice bodies of the wrist in a 71-year-old man and reviewed similar topics in the literature. A total of 43 articles and 61 cases were included in the literature review. Our case had a usual presentation: it was similar to those in the literature. The affected population was mainly older adults, with an average age of 59.43 (range, 3 to 90) years. The

BACKGROUND: There has been no ideal treatment for freezing-phase frozen shoulder to rapidly relieve pain and improve joint mobility. No any other team directly compared the effectiveness of combination of arthroscopic release and corticosteroid hydrodilatation with corticosteroid hydrodilatation only in treatment of freezing-phase frozen shoulder.
METHODS: Seventy-two patients with freezing-phase frozen shoulder were randomly assigned to combined arthroscopic release with corticosteroid hydrodilatation (group A) or corticosteroid hydrodilatation only (group B). Clinical states were examined a

Elbow bicipitoradial bursitis and partial distal biceps tendon (DBT) tears are a result of chronic overuse or other infective/inflammatory pathology and may be refractory to conservative treatment. The all-endoscopic approach provides minimally invasive access to the bursal space and DBT, and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures can be performed under direct endoscopic vision. The technique uses 2 portals, the proximal parabiceps portal and distal anterior portal, and the bursa is insufflated to create a working space. Tissue biopsies are obtained under direct endoscopic visualization, and de

Ultrasound guidance is valuable for performing precise joint interventions. Joint interventions may be requested for therapeutic and diagnostic pain injections, joint aspiration in the setting of suspected infection, or contrast injection for arthrography. In practice, interventions of the shoulder girdle, elbow, and hand/wrist joints may be performed without any imaging guidance. However, imaging guidance results in more accurate interventions and better patient outcomes than those performed by palpation alone. When compared to other modalities used for imaging guidance, ultrasound has many p

The risk of tuberculosis (TB) increases in immunocompromised patients. Multiple myeloma is considered a risk factor for TB and myeloma patients with TB have a higher mortality rate than those without TB. Herein, we report a case of concomitant TB of the iliotibial band mimicking a soft tissue tumor and tuberculous trochanteric bursitis in a patient with multiple myeloma. In this article, the characteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings were low T2 signals in the cystic fluid lesion, a dark T2 signal rim, and peripheral rim enhancement. These results could help differentiate TB of t

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium malmoense is a species of slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacteria. It causes mostly pulmonary infections or lymphadenitis in children, but is increasingly encountered in isolated tenosynovitis in adults. Diagnosis is often delayed because of the rarity of the condition and the difficulty of culturing the bacteria.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a rare association of seronegative polyarthritis with infectious nontuberculous mycobacteria tenosynovitis. A 65-year-old Caucasian female was referred to our clinic because of persisting tenosynovitis of the finger flexor t
