[Ultrasonographic findings of disorders of the tarsal region in 97 cattle--arthritis, bursitis, tenosynovitis, periarticular abscess and vein thrombosis].

The clinical, radiographic, ultrasonographic and centesis findings of 97 cattle with disorders of the tarsal region (arthritis, bursitis, tenosynovitis, abscess, vein thrombosis) were reviewed (1994-2006), and the typical ultrasonographic findings of different tarsal disorders in cattle are presented. The following criteria were assessed: echogenicity, echopattern, size, shape, appearance of the borders of synovial or other cavities. Ultrasonographic findings were compared with the clinical, radiographic and arthrocentesis results and with intraoperative and/or necropsy findings. 50 cattle suf

Non-neoplastic conditions presenting as soft-tissue tumours.

Review of referrals to our unit over the last 7 years showed that of approximately 750 cases referred as soft-tissue tumours, 132 were subsequently diagnosed as non-neoplastic lesions. The imaging characteristics of these lesions are presented to differentiate them from neoplasms. The most common diagnoses were myositis ossificans, ganglion cyst, abscess/infection, bursitis and synovitis. The imaging features of other rarer conditions will also be discussed.

Adjuvant arthritis 50 years on: The impact of the 1956 article by C. M. Pearson, 'Development of arthritis, periarthritis and periostitis in rats given adjuvants'.

The Science Citation Index (Web of Science) has now accumulated over 700 citations to this report published in Proc Soc exp Biol Med 1956; 91: 95-101, including several in 2006. This memoire is a tribute to its author for revealing the opportunities for so much subsequent research in experimental pharmacology and toxicology. For half a century, the adjuvant disease in rats has enormously aided research on drugs to control arthritis and other chronic inflammatory disorders. The adjuvant also triggers many systemic responses beyond the articular tissues. So we are given simultaneously a window t

Ultrasound evaluation of soft tissue masses and fluid collections.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound has utility as a first-line screening modality in the evaluation of soft tissue masses. The sonographic appearances of cysts or lipomas may be sufficient to obviate the need for further imaging. For other complex cystic or solid masses, ultrasound is an inexpensive, widely available imaging modality that can evaluate lesion vascularity, guide diagnostic and therapeutic aspiration or biopsy procedures, and be used for follow-up examinations to determine response to therapeutic interventions.

Injection-induced pyogenic arthritis of the shoulder joint.

This study reports the clinical results of treatment for injection-induced pyogenic arthritis of the shoulder joint. We followed up 13 patients who underwent operation for the treatment of pyogenic glenohumeral arthritis that developed after injections around the shoulder joint. Cultures identified Staphylococcus aureus in 6 patients and methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA) in 4. Finally, the University of California, Los Angeles Shoulder Score improved from 12.7 to 28.3 points. Four of the 9 patients with open surgery and 1 of 4 with arthroscopic surgery had good results; however, the other

Acute calcific periarthritis of the hand and wrist: a series and review of the literature.

This article presents three patients with acute calcific periarthritis (ACP) of the hand and wrist. ACP is an unusual, painful, monoarticular, periarticular inflammatory process associated with juxtaarticular deposits of amorphous calcium hydroxyapatite. ACP is a distinct clinical subset of hydroxyapatite deposition disease. ACP has a high rate of misdiagnosis because of its rare occurrence and its clinical resemblance to other entities. Clinical presentation may simulate infection, and the associated periarticular calcifications may be mistaken for gout, pseudogout, or other entities. One thi

[Spondylodiscitis as cause of unexplained fever].

An 83-year-old woman was admitted to hospital with complaints of fever, abdominal pain and other complaints suggesting urosepsis. Additional analyses did not reveal the cause of her complaints. After cessation of antibiotic therapy, there was a spontaneous decrease in the infection parameters and she was subsequently discharged. Two and a half months later she was presented in our hospital with low back pain with radiating to the legs. MRI showed signs ofa spondylodiscitis at the level of LIII-LIV existing for some time. Finally, a gram-positive streptococcus infection was found and she was tr

Technique and results of Achilles tendon detachment and reconstruction for insertional Achilles tendinosis.

BACKGROUND: Insertional Achilles tendinosis is a clinical entity that commonly occurs with other posterior heel disorders such as retrocalcaneal bursitis, Haglund deformity, intratendinous ossification and pretendinous bursitis. Complete detachment and reconstruction of the Achilles tendon was evaluated as a method of treatment for this condition. METHODS: Seventy-five patients (81 heels) were treated over a 5-year period for chronic insertional Achilles tendinosis. These were divided in two groups: a nondetached group (26 patients, 31 heels, average age 55 years) included all patients with d

Polymyalgia rheumatica: diagnosis and treatment.

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) typically manifests as inflammatory pain in the shoulder and/or pelvic girdles in a patient over 50 years of age. This condition was long underrecognized and therefore underdiagnosed. Today, however, overdiagnosis may occur. Physicians must be aware that many conditions may simulate PMR, including diseases that carry a grim prognosis or require urgent treatment. PMR may be the first manifestation of giant cell arteritis, and a painstaking search for other signs is mandatory. PMR may inaugurate other rheumatologic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, RS3PE syndrom

Staphylococcal septic synovitis of the sternoclavicular joint with retrosternal extension.

Bacterial arthritis of the sternoclavicular joint is an uncommon disorder caused by a variety of microorganisms. Both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria have been identified as etiologies of an acute suppurative arthritis, whereas a few other bacteria such as mycobacteria and treponemes have been incriminated in chronic disease of the sternoclavicular joint. We recently treated a patient with staphylococcal synovitis of the sternoclavicular joint, which is the 24th recorded in the literature. His illness was complicated by a retrosternal abscess, soft tissue abscess of the chest, septic

Pseudopodagra: A presenting manifestation of infective endocarditis.

Podagra is a term used to describe acute monoarthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal (1st MTP) joint. The most common diagnoses of arthritis in this joint are: crystal-induced synovitis, septic arthritis, traumatic conditions and reactive arthritis. When etiologies other than gout are involved this is frequently referred to as pseudopodagra. We report the case of a patient who presented with pain and swelling of the 1st MTP The absence of intraarticular crystals and hyperuricemia encouraged further evaluation of the patient. A cardiac murmur was investigated by echocardiography, which revea

Capitellocondylar total elbow replacement in late-stage rheumatoid arthritis.

Between 1994 and 2000, 51 capitellocondylar elbow replacements were inserted in 41 patients. All patients had late-stage rheumatoid arthritis. The mean age at operation was 56 years (range, 25-78 years). There were 12 men and 29 women. At follow-up, 6 patients had died of unrelated causes with the implant in situ and without radiographic loosening, and 1 patient was lost to follow-up. The remaining 43 elbows in 34 patients were followed up clinically and radiographically at a mean of 6.9 years (range, 26-119 months). Relief of pain was complete in 91% of the surviving elbows, and in 9%, there

Management of reactive arthritis.

Reactive arthritis (ReA) is an aseptic form of articular inflammation induced by infections mainly localised in the gastrointestinal (enteroarthritis) or urogenital (uroarthritis) tracts. The bacteria principally involved as causative agents are Chlamydia, Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter and Yersinia. The clinical picture is usually characterised by a mono-oligoarthritis of the lower limbs. Axial involvement is possible and extra-articular manifestations such as enthesitis, tenosynovitis, bursitis and dactylitis are frequent. NSAIDs and sulfasalazine are still the drugs most commonly used

Musculoskeletal disorders associated with HIV infection and AIDS. Part I: infectious musculoskeletal conditions.

The musculoskeletal system can be affected by a variety of abnormalities in association with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Although not as common as complications involving other organ systems, such as the pulmonary and the central nervous systems, HIV-associated musculoskeletal disorders are sometimes the initial presentation of the viral illness. Knowledge of the existence and the characteristic appearance of the conditions affecting bone, joint, and muscle in HIV-infected patients is valuable to radiologists for diagnosis and to clinicians for detection and appropriate treat

MRI features of tuberculosis of peripheral joints.

The aim of this article is to present the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of peripheral tubercular arthritis. The clinical presentation of peripheral tubercular arthritis is variable and simulates other chronic inflammatory arthritic disorders. MRI is a highly sensitive technique which demonstrates fine anatomical details and identifies the early changes of arthritis, which are not visible on radiographs. The MRI features of tubercular arthritis include synovitis, effusion, central and peripheral erosions, active and chronic pannus, abscess, bone chips and hypo-intense synovium. Thes

Hoof wall surgery in the horse: approaches to and underlying disorders.

Because of the hoof capsule, surgery of the equine foot is often perceived to be quite difficult. Knowledge of the specific disease entities that require surgical intervention as well as an in-depth understanding of the anatomy of the tissues beneath the hoof capsule is a definite prerequisite to successful surgical treatment. This article details the surgical approaches used to treat septic navicular bursitis, septic pedal osteitis, infection of the collateral cartilages, and keratomas. The principles used to treat these conditions can be applied to a variety of other conditions for which acc
