Diagnosis of myeloid leukosis induced by a recombinant avian leukosis virus in commercial white leghorn egg laying flocks.

Commercial white leghorn egg layer flocks being used to produce fertile eggs for human vaccine production exhibited dramatically low peaks in egg production, two to four times higher than normal weekly mortality, and high numbers of cull, nonlaying birds after the onset of sexual maturity. These lower production characteristics could not be associated with management-related problems. Gross lesions of cull and fresh dead birds necropsied showed approximately 60% lacked ovarian activity and had lesions of a bacterial bursitis or synovitis, whereas the other 40% had tumors of the viscera but not

Mycobacterium lacus sp. nov., a novel slowly growing, non-chromogenic clinical isolate.

A strain of a novel non-chromogenic mycobacterium was isolated from synovial tissue from a 68-year-old female with bursitis of her right elbow. The slowly growing strain had a unique PCR-restriction enzyme analysis (PRA) profile of the hsp65 gene and 16S rRNA gene sequence in comparison with other mycobacterium species. The most closely related species, as determined by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, are Mycobacterium malmoense, Mycobacterium marinum, Mycobacterium ulcerans and members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. The HPLC and biochemical profiles resembled those of Mycobacteri

Forefoot pain involving the metatarsal region: differential diagnosis with MR imaging.

Many disorders produce discomfort in the metatarsal region of the forefoot. These disorders include traumatic lesions of the soft tissues and bones (eg, turf toe, plantar plate disruption, sesamoiditis, stress fracture, stress response), Freiberg infraction, infection, arthritis, tendon disorders (eg, tendinosis, tenosynovitis, tendon rupture), nonneoplastic soft-tissue masses (eg, ganglia, bursitis, granuloma, Morton neuroma), and, less frequently, soft-tissue and bone neoplasms. Prior to the advent of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, many of these disorders were not diagnosed noninvasively,

[Anterior iliopsoas impingement after total hip arthroplasty: diagnosis and conservative treatment in 9 cases].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Impingement of the iliopsoas muscle due to a protruding acetabular component is an uncommon cause of pain after total hip arthroplasty. Diagnostic signs may be misleading and therapeutic management has varied, leading to divergent findings reported in the literature. The purpose of this prospective work was to determine the frequency of groin pain due to iliopsoas impingement (with or without an identified causal mechanism) in patients with painful total hip arthroplasties and to identify diagnostic criteria that can be used to determine the appropriate therapeutic strate

A comparison between septic bursitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus and those caused by other organisms.

Septic bursitis is an infection that usually involves olecranon and prepatellar bursae. Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for around 80% of cases. However, information regarding bursitis caused by non-Staphylococcus aureus microorganisms (NSAB) is scant. In this paper we describe the characteristics of NSAB and emphasise differences between these and Staphylococcus aureus bursitis (SAB). A retrospective study of all cases with septic bursitis seen between January 1991 and June 1998 at one university hospital was conducted. Only cases in which bursal fluid culture yielded growth of a microor

Osteomyelitis of the patella.

Osteomyelitis of the patella is an uncommon infection that is primarily a disease of childhood. The diagnosis frequently is delayed because of its rarity and variable presentation, which may be acute with systemic signs or insidious with mild local signs. The diagnosis should be considered in patients with persistent peripatellar pain and swelling, cellulitis, septic prepatellar bursitis, and septic arthritis of the knee that does not respond to standard treatment. Treatment is identical to the treatment of osteomyelitis at other locations. The outcome is favorable in the child regarding range

Rheumatic manifestations of infective endocarditis in non-addicts. A 12-year study.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is due to a microbial infection of the heart valves or of the endocardium in close proximity to either congenital or acquired cardiac defects. This infection is associated with a high risk of complications. Rheumatic manifestations are known to be frequent complications of IE. Controversy, however, frequently exists about the actual incidence of these complications. This may be due to the small number of series describing the frequency and type of rheumatic manifestations, the absence of uniform criteria used for the diagnosis of IE, and the fact that some studies o

Evaluation of the susceptibility of Prototheca zopfii to milk pasteurization.

Protothecosis has been reported in humans (gastroenteritis, bursitis, etc.) and in many other animal species. Bovine mastitis represents the main form of occurrence of protothecosis in cattle. Milk as well as dairy products, when contaminated with Prototheca spp., represent a potential means of transmission of this zoonosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility of forty Prototheca zopfii strains isolated from milk from intramammary infections in dairy cows and also from bulk milk tanks of dairy farms, to the different ratios of temperature/time employed in the thermal t

Abattoir survey of acquired reproductive abnormalities in ewes.

Abnormalities of the reproductive tract of female sheep were studied by examining 9970 reproductive tracts from cull ewes and 23,536 tracts from nulliparous sheep (prime lambs) over a period of 12 months in abattoirs in south-west England. Overall, 3.37 per cent of the tracts were pregnant (8.11 per cent of cull ewes, and 1.36 per cent of nulliparous sheep), with a peak incidence between September and December. A total of 655 ewes (6.57 per cent) and 459 nulliparous sheep (1.95 per cent) had acquired abnormalities of the reproductive tract. Within these totals, abnormalities of the ovaries acc

Nontuberculous mycobacterial bursitis and arthritis of the shoulder.

A 56-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus developed septic arthritis and bursitis of the left shoulder due to an atypical mycobacterium, M. xenopi. Plain radiography, ultrasound (US), and MRI were performed. Articular disease by tuberculous and nontuberculous mycobacteria have similar presentations, clinically as well as radiologically, and have to be differentiated from other chronic bacterial or fungal infections, pigmented villonodular synovitis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, hemophilia, and synovial chondromatosis. Although atypical mycobacterial involvement of the skeleton and s

Ultrasound of Musculoskeletal Infections.

Ultrasound (US) can play an important role in differentiating infectious processes from other musculoskeletal diseases. US is the imaging modality of choice to diagnose superficial abscesses. These abscesses may have variable echogenicity and their detection can be facilitated by ultrasonographic dynamic evaluation and color Doppler imaging. Septic arthritis either in a native or prosthetic joint may have devastating complications on the joint function. Early diagnosis requires joint fluid analysis. US is very sensitive in the detection of joint effusions and is helpful to guide the arthrocent

[The use of ultrasonic examination for the diagnosis of diseases of the locomotor system in cattle].

Besides the classical orthopedic examination, radiography and centesis of diseased synovial cavities ultrasonography was applied, for the first time, in 18 cattle for the investigation of proximal bovine limb disorders. The clinical and radiographic findings as well as the results of centesis were compared with the sonographic findings. Arthritis, tenosynovitis, bursitis, abscess formation and haematomas especially in proximal limb regions were observed. A 7,5 MHz linear-scan or a 5 MHz sector-scan were used for ultrasonic examination. By means of radiography, 8 out of 14 cattle showed a soft

Septic bursitis.

Nine cases of septic bursitis are presented, and the literature on the subject comprehensively reviewed, with an emphasis on the clinical manifestations of septic bursitis in various anatomic locations. Physical activities associated with increased susceptibility to septic bursitis and systemic conditions that increase the severity of septic bursitis are catalogued. Analysis of the microbiology of cases reported in the literature demonstrates that greater than 80% of cases of septic bursitis are caused by Staphylococcus aureus and other gram-positive organisms. However, a wide variety of gram-

16S rRNA sequence analysis of an isolate of Mycobacterium haemophilum from a heart transplant patient.

Biopsy samples from a heart transplant patient with cellulitis and bursitis yielded an isolate of Mycobacterium haemophilum. The isolate was identified on the basis of a growth requirement for haemin or ferric ammonium citrate, growth at 30 degrees C but not at 37 degrees C, negative catalase test, intracellular growth in McCoy fibroblasts and sequence identify with a portion of the 16S rRNA sequence of the type strain. In comparisons with known 16S rRNA sequences, M. haemophilum grouped with other pathogenic, slow-growing mycobacteria, showing close sequence similarity to M. marinum (98.8%) a

Mycobacterium asiaticum as the probable causative agent in a case of olecranon bursitis.

Mycobacterium asiaticum was isolated from fluid aspirated from an olecranon bursa that had become inflamed following a superficial injury. Other possible causes of the inflammation were excluded. No specific antimycobacterial therapy was given. The infection responded to drainage, regular dressing, and immobilization. Our experience suggests that M. asiaticum is a potential cause of infection of the joints and surrounding tissues.
