The Rare Large Common Peroneal Nerve's Schwannoma-A Case Report and Literature Review.

Schwannoma in the popliteal fossa is still rare, often diagnosed late because it grows slowly and has no symptoms. It is often misdiagnosed with connective tissue tumors or with neurological disorders originating in the spine or disorders of the peroneal nerve. Schwannoma within the common peroneal nerve is still rare in the popliteal fossa, with most tumor sizes around 2 cm in diameter due to their smaller size of nerve but can cause neurologic disturbance, especially when it is large. And over a long time, it can cause serious complaints like neurological deficits and make surgery difficult

Ultrasound-guided drainage of a popliteal ganglion cyst extending to the adventitia of the popliteal artery: a case report of cystic adventitial disease of synovial origin.

We report a case of a 67-year-old woman suffering from intermittent claudication secondary to severe popliteal stenosis due to compression by a popliteal ganglion cyst extending into the adventitia of the popliteal artery. After declining vein bypass grafting, this patient was successfully treated using ultrasound-guided aspiration of the cyst, which restored normal flow to the popliteal artery. Whilst aspiration of Baker's cysts causing claudication has been attempted before, this represents the first reported case of successful recanalization of the popliteal artery by ganglion cyst aspirati

Late Treatment Failure after Stenting and Percutaneous Aspiration for Adventitial Cystic Disease in the Popliteal Artery: A Follow-up Case Report.

Adventitial cystic disease (ACD), a rare vascular disease characterized by mucus accumulation in the adventitia of blood vessels, typically affects the popliteal artery. We present the case of a 61-year-old female diagnosed with ACD in 2018 who was initially treated with endovascular stenting and percutaneous aspiration of the cyst. The patient, who had been asymptomatic for 5 years, developed a stent fracture and pseudoaneurysm requiring surgical intervention. Despite initial successful treatment, complications such as stent fracture and recurrence can occur; therefore, surgical treatment is

Analysis of the efficacy of triple-channel minimally invasive knee arthroscopy in treating popliteal cysts in children.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate a technique for treating pediatric popliteal cysts with a triple-channel knee arthroscopic approach, hypothesizing that this technique exhibits favorable clinical outcomes with reduced recurrence rates. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 14 patients with symptomatic pediatric popliteal cysts admitted to the joint surgery center using an arthroscopic minimally invasive technique from December 2017 to December 2020. Arthroscopy was employed for adequate enlargement of the posterior medial flap opening between the c

Diagnostics and surgical treatment of ruptured Baker's cysts: A prospective study.

AIMS: We assessed diagnostic and arthroscopic surgery challenges the ruptured Baker's cysts (RBC) cases may present compared to intact Baker's cyst cases (IBC). The main question to explore was: Is RBC arthroscopic surgery more complex than IBS surgery? The null hypothesis was that RBC cases might present additional, and specific challenges for a surgeon and the arthroscopic procedure may be more complicated. METHODS: The prospective cohort study analyzed 100 operated patients (43 % female; mean age 61 ± 9.5 years) (2005-2022; follow-up to August 2023) diagnosed with RBC. The comparison group

A case of ruptured infrapatellar bursa sac with Baker's cyst.

A 40-year-old female arrived with persistent posterior right knee pain, swelling in the popliteal, infrapatellar, anterior calf areas and difficulty walking due to joint stiffness. Multiple hypoechoic collections with internal echoes and debris were discovered in the anterior calf region using ultrasound imaging, which extended from a thick-walled infrapatellar hypoechoic collection with peripheral vascularity. A significant popliteal fossa cyst of comparable appearance was also observed. The results were consistent with a ruptured infrapatellar bursa sac and a popliteal fossa (Baker's cyst).

Arthroscopic evaluation of anatomical variations of the oblique popliteal ligament and their association with popliteal cyst formation.

INTRODUCTION: The posteromedial compartment of the knee houses several important anatomical structures, including the oblique popliteal ligament (OPL), an accessory insertion tendon of the semimembranosus muscle. Popliteal cysts develop from the synovial bursa located between the medial gastrocnemius and the semimembranosus, typically secondary to intra-articular pathologies causing effusion. This study aimed to describe the normal anatomy of the postero-medial capsule of the knee and its anatomical variations, particularly in the presence of popliteal cysts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a

Two-Posteromedial Portal Arthroscopic Popliteal Cyst Excision.

The popliteal cyst is a common condition that causes disturbing symptoms. Several arthroscopic techniques are combined to treat the enlargement of communication and decompose the cyst wall, aiming to reduce recurrence. We propose a technique that involves resecting the posteromedial valve mechanism and excising the cyst wall through a 2-posteromedial portal approach. This technique is particularly helpful for visualization and facilitates complete resection of the cyst wall and capsular fold, even in large cysts, with low complication rates.

Primary hydatid of posterior thigh and popliteal fossa: A rare case report.

Hydatid disease of skeletal muscle is a rare entity. Liver followed by lung are the most common sites of hydatid cyst. Incidence of unusual sites which include spleen, kidney, mesentry, ovary, brain, skeletal system is 7,8 %. Skeletal muscle has the lowest incidence of primary hydatid among the unusual sites. Here we report a young female with rare primary hydatid disease of left posterior thigh extending into popliteal fossa.

A Large Calf Mass in a Patient with Rheumatoid Arthritis: Giant Pannus Filling Baker's Cyst.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) presents a significant challenge among autoimmune diseases, affecting millions globally with diverse clinical manifestations, primarily targeting joints and inducing inflammation, pain, and deformities. In some cases, it leads to the formation of Bakers cysts, fluid-filled bursae in the popliteal region, resulting from chronic inflammation of the synovial membrane and subsequent pannus growth. Our case, a young female patient with RA, presenting with calf mass, highlights this complex interplay. She presented with large swelling and pain in her left calf region which

Complex Interplay: A Gigantic Recurrent Popliteal Cyst Following Total Knee Arthroplasty in a Patient with Refractory Rheumatoid Arthritis Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis ( JIA) is a persistent autoimmune-inflammatory disease that affects children younger than 16. Aggressive synovitis of the hip may cause joint destruction, hip protrusion, erosion, pseudosubluxation, dysplasia, and osteoarthritis. Subluxation of the hip had been reported previously. However, dislocation of the hip in JIA is an extremely rare situation, and only two cases have been reported up to date. Reduction of the dislocated hip has to be performed in any way. However, there is no algorithm to be followed for the treatment of hip dislocations caus

Synovial Chondromatosis in a Young Athlete: A Report of a Rare Case.

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare and benign disorder that involves the synovial lining of joints, synovial sheaths and bursae. The synovial layer of the joint is affected by a metaplastic process which in turn converts it into cartilagenous tissue. Eventually, it gets dislodged and transformed into a loose body in the large joints. We report the case of a 24-year-old young athlete who presented with complaints of painful movements and restriction of joint movements associated with a growing deformity in the right knee joint. This case report aims to describe a rare synovial pathology that nec

Cystic lesions and bursae around the knee: do they matter in knee osteoarthritis?

The cause of knee osteoarthritis (OA) and knee pain associated with OA is not well understood. Periarticular cystic lesions and bursae around the knee are among the most common morphologic features identified on MRI in the setting of OA. Despite widespread association of these lesions with knee OA and their inclusion in semiquantitative MRI scoring assessment systems for knee OA, the role that these lesions play in the development of knee pain and OA remains uncertain. In this discussion, we review the cystic lesions and bursae most commonly associated with OA of the knee, examine their relati

Parameniscal cyst: an important differential diagnosis in slow growing masses of the knee.

INTRODUCTION: Parameniscal cysts are small cystic lesions, near the meniscus, involving medial and lateral compartments at equal frequency. Frequently, parameniscal cysts are so small that patients do not notice them, being asymptomatic. However, they can grow and exceed 2 centimeters in diameter, causing pain and alarm due to the slow growing mass. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for diagnosis. METHODS: Case report of a patient admitted to rheumatology department in the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra. RESULTS: We report a case of a 47-year-old male with i

Adventitial Cystic Disease in the Popliteal Artery Diagnosed by Intravascular Ultrasound Imaging.

The prevalence of peripheral artery disease (PAD) has been increasing in parallel with the increasing prevalence of the atherosclerotic disease. Therefore, we have to be familiar with the diagnostic approach used for ischemic symptoms in the lower limbs. Adventitial cystic disease (ACD) is rare but not negligible as one of the differential diagnoses of intermittent claudication (IC). Although duplex ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are helpful tools for the diagnosis of ACD, further imaging modality is needed to avoid misdiagnosis. A 64-year-old man with a mitral valve prosthesi

Arthroscopic cystectomy and valve excision of popliteal cysts complemented with management of intra-articular pathologies: a low recurrence rate and good functional outcomes in a series of ninety seven cases.

PURPOSE: Arthroscopy in popliteal cyst surgery enables addressing all components of its pathomechanism: the cyst wall, valvular mechanism, and concomitant intra-articular pathologies. Techniques differ as to the management of the cyst wall and the valvular mechanism. This study aimed to assess the recurrence rate and functional outcomes of a cyst wall and valve excising arthroscopic technique with concurrent intra-articular pathology management. The secondary purpose was to assess cyst and valve morphology and concomitant intra-articular findings. METHODS: Between 2006 and 2012, 118 patients

Risk factors for residual popliteal cyst after arthroscopic decompression and cystectomy: Associated with degenerative cartilage lesions.

BACKGROUND: In previous studies, good results have been reported after arthroscopic treatment of popliteal cysts and concomitant intra-articular pathology. However, only a few studies have reported the associated factors with residual popliteal cysts. The aim of this study was to examine the clinical and radiographic outcomes and investigate the factors associated with the recurrence of popliteal cyst after arthroscopic cyst decompression and cyst wall resection. HYPOTHESIS: The authors hypothesized that residual popliteal cyst after arthroscopic decompression and cystectomy would be associat
