Demonstration of articular effusions and popliteal cysts with ultrasound.

Echography has been employed in 10 patients with knee effusions and in two patients with Baker's cysts. In all instances, echography clearly identified the effusions. In four patients, the presence of connective tissue septa were also shown. This technique appears to be preferred to arthrography or the intra-articular injection of isotopes. Nevertheless, echography provides only "morphologic" information which complements other methods of investigation.

Ultrasound evaluation of the popliteal space. Comparison with arthrography and physical examination.

Ultrasound scanning techniques were used to examine the popliteal space in 102 knees. In 30 of 34 knees in which arthrograms were also obtained, the information obtained from both tests was the same. In two instances in which there were different results, the presence of palpable popliteal cysts was confirmed by ultrasound scans but not by arthrography, and in two other cases, small asymptomatic cysts were seen on arthrograms but not on ultrasound scans. In the 68 other knees, ultrasound scans were helpful in the differential diagnosis of popliteal cysts, popliteal artery aneurysms, thrombophl

Ruptured popliteal cyst -- an unusual complication of osteo-arthritis: a case report.

Synovial rupture produces a syndrome resembling acute thrombophlebitis and it is usually seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The interesting feature reported here is the occurrence of popliteal cyst rupture in a patient with no evidence of inflammatory joint disease. It is important to diagnose this condition correctly and to avoid anticoagulant therapy.

[Isolated obliteration of the popliteal artery. Angiographic, functional and surgical considerations].

31 patients suffering from isolated obliteration of the popliteal artery were selected for reporting from a series of 1500 peripheral angiographies. It is pointed out that the lesion is due principally to a segmentary localization of atherosclerosis. A case of adventitial cyst and one of muscular pincer syndrome have also been encountered. Attentive study of angiographic pictures showed up a number of behaviour modalities of the collateral circulation. The surgical approaches available in such circumstances are also reported.

Dissecting popliteal cyst: an unusual complication of Reiter's syndrome.

A case of Reiter's syndrome associated with a dissecting popliteal cyst mimicking deep vein thrombophlebitis is reported. The cyst was diagnosed by arthrography and responded to intra-articular injection of corticosteroids. The diagnosis of a dissecting popliteal cyst should be considered in a patient with arthritis of the knee joint from any cause and who develops signs and symptoms of thrombophlebitis.

Cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery.

The first case of cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery recorded in Canada is reported and discussed in conjunction with a review of the world literature of 45 reported cases. This rare cause of arterial insufficiency occurs usually in young men and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of claudication. Angiographic findings are diagnostic and surgery is usually corrective. The theories of etiology and pathogenesis are discussed and the gross and microscopic pathology is demonstrated.

Popliteal cysts in children. The case against surgery.

The natural history of 120 popliteal cysts in children has been reviewed. Of seventy untreated cysts fifty-one disappeared spontaneously during a mean period of one year and eight months. Of fifty cysts submitted to operation, twenty-one recurred in a mean period of seven months. Three children with recurrences had more than one further operation. Most popliteal cysts in children disappear spontaneously, and operation without very good reason is unjustified.

"Arthrography diagnosis of synovial cysts of the knee.".

A lateral view of the knee in 90 degree flexion can reveal popliteal cysts which do not show on routine arthrography. Flexion causes transfer of intra-articular fluid to the posterior portion of the joint space, lowering pressure within the cyst and allowing it to fill with contrast media.

Popliteal cysts: presentation as thrombophlebitis.

Synovial-lined cysts in the popliteal space associated with rheumatoid arthritis or meniscal tears may compress the popliteal vein and produce signs and symptoms suggestive of thrombophlebitis. Because of a presumptive diagnosis of thrombophlebitis, venography may be performed initially and demonstrate compression of the popliteal vein by an extrinsic mass. The correct diagnosis of a popliteal cyst can easily be made with B-mode ultrasonography, and, if desired, confirmed by arthrography. Four cases are presented which emphasize these features.

[Pitfalls during phlebology consultation].

For a patient suffering with his legs, the pain is usually associated with the presence of one or more varices that can be seen. The physician must not fall into this trap. Questioning is vital. Establishing the kind of pain and the conditions under which it occurs may elok for (1) a rheumatological etioloty: sciatic or crural nerve pain, calcaneal pain: (2) a surgical etiology: an inguinal or particularly a crural hernia, a popliteal cyst; (3) a medical etiology: exogenous polyneuritis, hypokalaemia resulting from the abuse of laxatives or of diuretics, etc.

Cystic adventitial disease of the common femoral artery.

Cystic adventitial disease consists of a collection of clear gelatinous material within an aberrant synovial-type cyst located in the subadventitial plane of the wall of a major artery. Recurrent minor trauma is presumed to potentiate mucin production and enlargement of the cyst with resultant arterial occlusion and symptoms of ischemia. It occurs most commonly in the popliteal artery in young men; forty-seven such patients have been reported on. Extrapopliteal disease is distinctly less frequent, occurring three times in the external iliac, three times in the radial, once in the ulnar, and on

Ruptured popliteal cyst stimulating deep vein thrombosis with false positive radiofibrinogen uptake.

A case is described in which deep vein thrombosis of the calf was initially diagnosed on the basis of the clinical signs and the radiofibrinogen uptake in a patient suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. The correct diagnosis of ruptured popliteal cyst was later established by arthrography and phlebography. Attention is drawn to the unreliability of the radiofibrinogen uptake test in the presence of ruptured popliteal cyst and alternative diagnostic methods are discussed.

[Mucoid pseudo-cysts of the sheath of the external popliteal sciatic nerve. Apropos of 2 cases].

Two cases of paralysis of the etxernal popliteal sciatic nerve are described. They are secondary to the development of a pseudo-cyst containing mucoid matter within the connective tissue sheath of the nerve itself. The authors describe the pathological anatomy of these lesions and discuss their aetiology, favouring the theory of mucoid degeneration of the connective tissues of the nerve sheath. They give brief indication of the clinical symptoms and emphasize the need for early but simplified surgery, ruling out any nerve resection.
