BACKGROUND: Elbow disorders are a common cause of pain and functional impairment in the adult population, yet there is a lack of comprehensive epidemiological studies describing their distribution. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing the epidemiology of elbow complaints in a specialized orthopedic clinic.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence, age distribution, and sex-related differences of the most common elbow disorders in an outpatient orthopedic setting.
METHODS: A single-center cross-sectional study of medical records from patients treated between 2015 and 2024. Adults of both

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular corticosteroid injection and suprascapular nerve block are both options for nonoperative management of adhesive capsulitis. While numerous studies support the benefits of steroid injections, the use of suprascapular nerve blocks is less established. Published randomized trials comparing steroid injections and suprascapular nerve blocks for managing adhesive capsulitis have reported mixed results. This study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of published level I studies to compare outcomes for patients with adhesive capsulitis following intra-art

A 63-year-old female presented with acute, atraumatic posterior elbow pain. She was found to have infectious olecranon bursitis with resistant bacteria. Her treatment was complicated by a penicillin allergy, necessitating the use of linezolid, which was further complicated by the rare black hairy tongue (BHT) side effect of linezolid. Despite the visible discoloration and associated pain from BHT, the patient continued linezolid to treat her bursal infection. She recovered from the bursitis and linezolid side effects after completion, supporting that immediate withdrawal is not necessary for t

Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder is a common condition in which calcium hydroxyapatite crystals form within the rotator cuff tendons, most often the supraspinatus. As a sequela of this condition, long-term discomfort may develop with intermittent acute flares. Symptoms can also arise suddenly, causing intense pain and limited shoulder motion. These effects are often reflected in patient-reported outcome measures, for example, overall limitations in upper-extremity function and overhead activity. During flares, symptoms can mimic septic arthritis. This occurs on clinical exams and imaging. A

A 51-year-old male presented with right knee swelling with persistent pain for the past two weeks. Radiograph of the knee showed no bone abnormalities. Bursectomy was performed and the aspirated fluid was sent for laboratory analysis. Gram staining revealed fungal filaments, and culture on Sabouraud's dextrose agar yielded blackish-brown pigmented fungal colonies. Histopathological examination showed slender, septate hyphae. PCR sequencing identified Paraconiothyrium estuarinum as the causative agent. The patient was treated with itraconazole for 3 months with regular follow-up, resulting in c

Tophaceous gout is a chronic sequela of hyperuricemia, typically and predominantly affecting peripheral joints. However, isolated elbow involvement of the olecranon with a large tophaceous ulcer is uncommon. We report a rare case of chronic tophaceous olecranon bursopathy in a 48-year-old male patient with poorly controlled hyperuricemia, highlighting the diagnostic, imaging, and surgical aspects of this condition. The histopathological examination confirmed the presence of urate crystal tophi devoid of any malignant features.

BACKGROUND: The sensitivity of MRI in detecting joint inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis is well known but its specificity is less discussed. It is important to prevent false positive results and consequent overdiagnosis. Therefore, we aimed to examine MRI-detected inflammation that is less specific for rheumatoid arthritis by evaluating the frequencies of inflammation in healthy controls and in two at-risk groups who have not developed rheumatoid arthritis, compared with patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
METHODS: In this cohort study, we performed contrast-enhanced MRIs of the second to

Hamstring injuries are a common injury sustained by athletes with most injuries occurring as strain injuries within the muscle belly or at the proximal musculotendinous junction. Distal hamstring pathology is relatively uncommon but comprises a collection of both acute and chronic diagnoses that can manifest with symptoms either on the medial or lateral side of the knee based on which hamstring tendons are involved. Pes anserinus bursitis is the most common of these distal hamstring pathologies with other chronic diagnoses, including snapping medial hamstrings or snapping biceps femoris. Acute

IMPORTANCE: Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) is a chronic condition commonly defined as pain in the lateral hip joint that can be severely limiting to activities of daily living, sleep, and overall quality of life. It encompasses numerous disease states causing pain in the region of the greater trochanter of the femur. Noninvasive management approaches for GTPS include corticosteroid injections and physiotherapy, preferred as first-line interventions prior to surgical interventions. Understanding the impact of randomized control trials (RCTs) can enhance the understanding of treatment

Background/Objectives: Tendinopathy is the preferred term to describe various tendon pathologies, including paratendinitis, tendinitis, and tendinosis, in the absence of histopathological evidence in biopsy specimens. The management of tendinopathies is challenging; rest, physiotherapy (such as eccentric training), injections, shock waves, orthotics, medical therapy, and surgery are the main therapeutic options offered to the patient. The conservative treatment of tendinopathies is still difficult, but several options have been proposed, including the use of anti-inflammatory molecules. In thi

PURPOSE: To assess hip arthroscopy epidemiology in the United States from 2015 to 2023 and provide projections through 2030, as well as analyze rates of postoperative complications.
METHODS: The TriNetX/U.S. Collaborative Networks database was used to identify patients aged 10 to 89 years who underwent hip arthroscopy in the United States from 2015 to 2023. Demographic information, such as age, sex, and body mass index, was analyzed. Prevalence (P), incidence proportion (IP), and incidence rate (IR) were measured. Regression modeling was used to project through 2030. Complications such as fem

Purpose Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a precursor of secondary osteoarthritis, with borderline DDH (BDDH) often overlooked. This study explores three-dimensional (3D) proximal femoral morphology in DDH and BDDH and examines their distinctions from normal hips (NH), emphasizing new correlations between femoral parameters and hip instability. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 130 hips from 120 patients categorized as DDH (lateral center-edge angle (LCEA) < 20°), BDDH (20°-25°), or NH (>25°). Detailed 3D analyses using advanced CT imaging measured unique femoral parameters such as

Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) is characterized by pain and tenderness over the lateral aspect of the hip. It encompasses a spectrum of conditions, including abductor tendinopathy, trochanteric bursitis, and external coxa saltans. Following diagnosis, managing GTPS can be challenging due to the variability in pathology and the wide range of available treatments, many of which are supported by low levels of evidence. At present, there is no clear consensus on the optimal management approach for this condition. This review evaluates the existing literature on GTPS management, aiming t

Iliopsoas bursitis (IB) is a rare entity and usually presents with ambiguous clinical presentation similar to other musculoskeletal conditions in the anatomic area. In septic IB, patients usually present with vague complaints of hip pain and fever. To better understand this vague clinical entity, a systematic review of cases of iliopsoas bursitis published in the open literature was performed to better characterize the clinical presentation, demographics and clinical outcome in patients with IB. An analysis of 50 articles and 54 patients including our index case revealed that hip pain was the m

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether MRI can differentiate hips with nonspecific inflammatory conditions from controls based on measurements of the capsule and to identify the most significant measurements.
METHODS: In this retrospective and case-control study, we reviewed hip MRIs containing the term "capsulitis" in the reports. Cases with other known diagnoses or confounding joint pathologies were excluded. Controls were asymptomatic hips with normal laboratory results. Three musculoskeletal radiologists independently reviewed the studies, assessing for qualitative (edema, enhancement, effusion

Tuberculous trochanteric bursitis is a rare condition that accounts for less than 2% of musculoskeletal tuberculosis cases, usually diagnosed late because of reduced diagnostic suspicion, and the insidious clinical presentation aspect of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. We describe the case of a 26-year-old male presenting with a slowly enlarging painful mass of the right hip without systemic symptoms. Imaging initially suggested hydatidosis, but aspiration confirmed Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A complete bursectomy combined with antitubercular therapy led to full recovery with no recurrence at t

Palmar bursitis and tenosynovitis of the flexor tendon sheath around the wrist is a rare manifestation of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. It has an indolent course and diagnosis is often delayed especially when it is an isolated finding. Timely diagnosis can prevent complications like bony involvement, tendon rupture and neuropathy. Here, we report a case of a 42-year-old male patient who presented with gradually progressive painful swelling of the left palm, wrist and distal forearm. Ultrasound and MRI revealed synovial thickening and distension of the palmar bursae and flexor tendon sheath wit

Aims Shoulder pain is a common yet often overlooked manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The prevalence and causes of shoulder pain in RA patients are not well-characterized, and imaging techniques, such as high-resolution musculoskeletal ultrasound (HRUS), have been underutilized in understanding its etiological profile. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and explore underlying structural abnormalities (assessed via HRUS) and clinical characteristics of shoulder pain in patients with RA. Materials and methods An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted involving 208 R
