Work-Related Risk Factors for Rotator Cuff Syndrome in a Prospective Study of Manufacturing and Healthcare Workers.

OBJECTIVE: This prospective study assessed the risk of developing rotator cuff syndrome (RCS) with separate or specific combinations of biomechanical exposures measures, controlling for individual confounders. BACKGROUND: Compared with other musculoskeletal disorders, rates of work-related shoulder musculoskeletal disorders have been declining more slowly. METHOD: We conducted up to 2 years of individual, annual assessments of covariates, exposures, and health outcomes for 393 U.S. manufacturing and healthcare workers without RCS at baseline. Task-level biomechanical exposures assessed expos

Screening of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Upper Limb Disorders Using the SALTSA Protocol: A Work-Site Study in Belgium.

BACKGROUND: Long-term absenteeism continues to rise in Belgium and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) have been considered a primary cause. However, there is still uncertainty about the prevalence of MSDs, and about the contribution of work-related factors in the etiology of MSDs. SALTSA, which was developed in 2001, is a European diagnostic criterion document that aims to standardize the reporting of work-related upper limb MSDs (ULMSDs). The purpose of this work-site study was to implement SALTSA in daily occupational health practice and to determine the prevalence of ULMSDs in a Belgian compa

Predictive factors for the duration until return to work after surgery for work-related rotator cuff syndrome: A prospective study of 92 workers.

BACKGROUND: Return to work (RTW) after surgery for a work-related rotator cuff disorder (WRRCD) is often difficult. The study's purpose was to identify preoperative factors predicting RTW. METHODS: Ninety-two workers with a WRRCD were identified by four surgeons. Before surgery, the workers completed a series of standardized questionnaires related to working conditions, health, and health beliefs. They were followed up prospectively for 20 months. Statistical analysis was based on single and multiple-factor Cox models of the duration of absence from the time of surgery until RTW. RESULTS: Th

Patient gender and rotator cuff surgery: are there differences in outcome?

BACKGROUND: Although rotator cuff syndrome is common and extensively studied from the perspective of producing healed tendons, influence of gender on patient-reported outcomes is less well examined. As activity and role demands may vary widely between men and women, clarity on whether gender is an important factor in outcome would enhance patient education and expectation management. Our purpose was to determine if differences exist in patient-reported outcomes between men and women undergoing rotator cuff surgery. METHODS: One hundred forty-eight participants (76 W:72 M) aged 35-75 undergoin

[Translation, validation and cultural adaptation of the SANE (Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation) in patients with shoulder pathology].

INTRODUCTION: The Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (SANE) score is a brief method of evaluating patients' perception of the shoulder joint and has proven high correlation with other outcome measures that are more lengthy and time-consuming in daily practice. The SANE score to date has not been validated in Spanish. OBJECTIVE: To translate, adapt, and validate the SANE score in Spanish. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An initial translation and counter-translation was conducted by two bilingual evaluators and an official translator. Content validity was evaluated by a group of experts in shoulder s

Measurement of the coracohumeral distance on magnetic resonance imaging in a large patient cohort.

BACKGROUND: Coracoid impingement syndrome is an increasingly recognized etiology of anterior shoulder pain. Numerus studies have documented the coracohumeral distance (CHD) as a primary or secondary measurement in symptomatic individuals, but there lacks an evaluation of CHD in a large cohort of asymptomatic individuals. The purpose of this study was to quantify a normative distribution of the CHD in a large cohort of healthy, asymptomatic subjects with no history of impingement or shoulder instability. METHODS: Incoming first-year students in the United States Military Academy were offered e

Prior mood disorder diagnoses do not relate to current mood disorder symptoms or patient-reported disease severity in rotator cuff patients.

BACKGROUND: Surgery for rotator cuff syndrome does not always produce symptom improvement. Biological factors may explain some symptoms, but mood disorder symptoms may also contribute. The purpose of this study is to examine the interaction between disease severity, prevalence of mood disorder diagnoses, and current mood disorder symptoms in preoperative rotator cuff patients. METHODS: A prospective cohort of patients aged 35-75 years with unilateral rotator cuff disease awaiting surgery participated. Dose-Response Relationship between Physical Workload and Specific Shoulder Diseases-A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis.

Several epidemiological studies have found an association between shoulder-loaded work activities and specific shoulder diseases. No study has derived the dose-response relationship and resulting doubling dose, important for the recognition of occupational diseases. This systematic review is an update of the van der Molen et al. (2017) review. Based on its methodologies, we identified new studies published up to November 2018. The dose-response relationship between physical occupational demands (hands at/above shoulder level, repetitive movements, forceful work, hand-arm vibrations) and specif

Reports of atypical shoulder pain and dysfunction following inactivated influenza vaccine, Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), 2010-2017.

BACKGROUND: Vaccines administered into or too close to underlying joint structures have the potential to cause shoulder injuries. Limited data exist on the epidemiology of such events. OBJECTIVE: To describe case reports of atypical shoulder pain and dysfunction following injection of inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV). METHODS: We searched the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) database from July 2010 to June 2017 for reports of atypical shoulder pain and dysfunction following IIV. When identifying reports, we made no assumptions about true incident injury or causality with res
