Between-employer differences in working conditions may lead to variable injury rates. The objective of this paper is to assess the difference in the prevalence of epicondylitis, rotator cuff syndrome, and low back pain among immigrant Latino poultry workers at plants of three different employers. Data were collected from a cross-sectional study among 286 poultry processing workers. Community-based sampling was used to recruit participants in western North Carolina. Rotator cuff syndrome (26.7%) and low back pain (27.9%) were more prevalent among employees of one specific employer. Multivariate

This paper evaluates the variability in the prevalence of epicondylitis, rotator cuff syndrome, low back pain, and lower extremity pathology among immigrant Latino farmworkers and non-farmworkers. Data were collected from a study among 272 farmworkers and non-farmworkers. Participants were recruited in eastern and central North Carolina. A physical examination was conducted by trained physicians. Prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among Latino manual workers is high compared with other workers in similar occupations. Non-farmworkers (49%) had a higher prevalence of MSDs than farmwo

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) represent the leading causes of occupational injuries among nursing staff. This population-based study was designed to assess the incidence and age-specific incidence of MSDs among a Taiwanese nurse cohort compared with non-nurses.
DESCRIPTION: Data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database were used to identify MSDs in the study population. A total of 3914 nurses with a diagnosis of MSD were included, together with 11,744 non-nurses as a comparison group. The comparison subjects were randomly selected at a ratio of 3:1 relative t

BACKGROUND: The subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) includes the rotator cuff syndrome, tendonitis and bursitis of the shoulder. Treatment includes surgical and non-surgical modalities. Non-surgical treatment is used to reduce pain, to decrease the subacromial inflammation, to heal the compromised rotator cuff and to restore satisfactory function of the shoulder. To select the most appropriate non-surgical intervention and to identify gaps in scientific knowledge, we explored the effectiveness of the interventions used, concentrating on the effectiveness of physiotherapy and manual therapy.

Most patients experience pain relief and functional improvement following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, but some continue to experience symptoms postoperatively. Patients with so-called failed rotator cuff syndrome, that is, with continued pain, weakness, and limited active range of motion following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, present a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. A thorough patient history, physical examination, and imaging studies (eg, plain radiography, MRI, magnetic resonance arthrography, ultrasonography) are required for diagnosis. Management is determined based on pa

OBJECTIVE: To determine the potential role of differential exposure to work organization hazards in musculoskeletal disorders among immigrant Latino workers.
METHOD: Self-reported work organization data were obtained from immigrant Latino workers in poultry processing and nonpoultry, manual occupations (N = 742). Clinical evaluations for epicondylitis, rotator cuff syndrome, and back pain were obtained from a subsample (n = 518).
RESULTS: Several work organization hazards (eg, low job control, high psychological demands) were elevated among poultry processing workers. Job control predicted e

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff syndrome is often treated with subacromial injection of corticosteroid and local anesthetic. It has not been established if the common injection routes of the bursa are equally accurate.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective clinical trial involving seventy-five shoulders in seventy-five patients who were randomly assigned to receive a subacromial injection through an anterior, lateral, or posterior route with respect to the acromion. An experienced physician performed the injections, which contained radiopaque contrast medium, corticosteroid, and local anesthetic. Afte

OBJECTIVES: To study the employment and occupational outcomes of workers who were diagnosed with upper limb musculoskeletal disorders (UL-MSDs) or had complained of upper limb musculoskeletal pain a few years before compared with workers who had no upper limb pain.
METHODS: In 2002-2005, an epidemiological surveillance system was set up. Occupational physicians examined 3710 randomly selected workers. It focused on six UL-MSDs: rotator cuff syndrome, lateral epicondylitis, flexor-extensor peritendinitis of the hands and fingers, de Quervain's disease, carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar tunnel s

BACKGROUND: To compare risk factors for shoulder pain without and with rotator cuff syndrome (RCS).
METHODS: A total of 3,710 workers of a French region were randomly included in the cross-sectional study between 2002 and 2005. Personal and occupational risk factors were assessed during a physical examination and by a self-administered questionnaire. Multinomial logistic modeling was used for the following outcomes: no shoulder pain and no RCS (reference), shoulder pain without RCS (called "shoulder pain") and RCS, separately for men and women.
RESULTS: The prevalence rates of "shoulder pain

Injections are valuable procedures for managing musculoskeletal conditions commonly encountered by family physicians. Corticosteroid injections into articular, periarticular, or soft tissue structures relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility. Injections can provide diagnostic information and are commonly used for postoperative pain control. Local anesthetics may be injected with corticosteroids to provide additional, rapid pain relief. Steroid injection is the preferred and definitive treatment for de Quervain tenosynovitis and trochanteric bursitis. Steroid injections can also

OBJECTIVE: Because musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) is highly user dependent, we aimed to establish whether non-mentored learning of MSUS is sufficient to achieve the same level of diagnostic accuracy and scanning reliability as has been achieved by rheumatologists recognized as international experts in MSUS.
METHODS: A group of 8 rheumatologists with more experience in MSUS and 8 rheumatologists with less experience in MSUS participated in an MSUS exercise to assess patients with musculoskeletal abnormalities commonly seen in a rheumatology practice. Patients' established diagnoses were obt

Despite two international studies, there is still no consensus concerning prostate cancer screening. The results of a meta-analysis are making us question our convictions concerning pneumococcal vaccination. The preoperative work-up of cataract surgery can be simplified. When describing the efficacy of a treatment to a patient, relative risks are better understood than absolute risks. For rotator cuff syndrome, intramuscular corticosteroid injections are as efficient as intra-articular injections. In patients prescribed clopidogrel, a proton pump inhibitor is not absolutely necessary. The arri

Tuberculosis of the shoulder is rare and its diagnosis is likely to be delayed because its symptoms often resemble those of the primary frozen shoulder or rotator cuff syndrome. The standard treatment is principally antituberculous chemotherapy plus débridement, if necessary. In this report, we describe 2 patients with advanced shoulder joint tuberculosis that were treated by débridement and closed continuous irrigation and suction using normal saline followed by early range-of-motion exercise with satisfactory results. We emphasize that surgical débridement and closed continuous irrigation an

BACKGROUND: The use of shock wave therapy (ESWT) and radial pressure-wave therapy (rESWT) is controversial in chronic musculoskeletal pain. The aim of this literature review is to assess the effect of these therapies in rotator cuff syndrome with and without calcium deposits, lateral epicondylitis and planar fasciitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Medical databases were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials. 54 were identified; 49 of these assessed the effect ESWT and five assessed the effect rESWT. 27 studies were of high of medium quality and form the basis for the assessment of

Vitamin E, known for its antioxidant properties, has been studied extensively for its potential health benefits, particularly in mitigating skin and overall health complications. The skin serves as a crucial barrier against environmental stressors and oxidative damage. Vitamin E, comprising tocopherols and tocotrienols, acts as a potent antioxidant, scavenging free radicals that contribute to skin aging, inflammation, and diseases. Studies have demonstrated that Vitamin E supplementation can enhance skin health by protecting against UV-induced damage, improving moisture retention, and promotin

Continuing with comparative genomic exploration of worldwide butterfly fauna, we use all protein-coding genes as they are retrieved from the whole genome shotgun sequences for phylogeny construction. Analysis of these genome-scale phylogenies projected onto the taxonomic classification and the knowledge about butterfly phenotypes suggests further refinements of butterfly taxonomy that are presented here. As a general rule, we assign most prominent clades of similar genetic differentiation to the same taxonomic rank, and use criteria based on relative population diversification and the extent o
