BACKGROUND: We studied musculoskeletal diseases (MSD) and injuries among fishermen and seamen with focus on low back disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), rotator cuff syndrome and arthrosis.
METHODS: Cohorts of all male Danish seamen (officers and non-officers) and fishermen employed 1994 and 1999 with at least six months employment history were linked to the Occupational Hospitalisation Register. We calculated standardised incidence ratios (SIR) for the two time periods, using rates for the entire Danish workforce as a reference.
RESULTS: Among fishermen, we found high SIRs for knee art

We describe a case of an original insertion of the pectoralis minor on the coracohumeral ligament, supraspinatus tendon and the capsule of the glenohumeral joint. This variation has been described in anatomy textbooks since the nineteenth century. The peculiarity of this case is that the right shoulder presented type 2 and the left type 1 of the three varieties described by Le Double in 1897. Le Double (1843-1913) was a French anatomist who wrote a treaty on anatomical variations, in particular those of the muscle. Lately, only three publications have reported this variation in anatomic studie

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with rotator cuff syndrome (RCS) among active workers.
METHODS: Seven hundred thirty-three workers in 12 worksites participated in a cross-sectional study with individual structured physical and psychosocial health interviews, physical examinations, and exposure assessments of biomechanical factors. Work organization, including job content or structural constraints, was assessed at the departmental level. Multivariable logistic modeling was used.
RESULTS: Fifty-five subjects (7.5%) had RCS. Cases were more likely to report low job security (P < 0.04)

Injections are valuable procedures for managing musculoskeletal conditions commonly encountered by family physicians. Corticosteroid injections into articular, periarticular, or soft tissue structures relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility. Injections can provide diagnostic information and are commonly used for postoperative pain control. Local anesthetics may be injected with corticosteroids to provide additional, rapid pain relief. Steroid injection is the preferred and definitive treatment for de Quervain tenosynovitis and trochanteric bursitis. Steroid injections can also

BACKGROUND: Upper limb disorders (ULDs) are common, and so are the difficulties in specific diagnoses of these disorders. Prior studies have shed light on the nerves in the diagnostic approach beside disorders related to muscles, tendons and joints (MCDs).
OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to compare the distribution of upper limb disorders, and the vibration perception threshold (VPT) in different diagnostic groups according to 1) A-criteria: the SALTSA consensus criteria, including MCDs and four peripheral neuropathies, and 2) B-criteria: including MCDs and 10 different neuropathy diagnoses--re-de

OBJECTIVE: Since 2002, an epidemiologic surveillance system of work-related, upper-limb musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) has been implemented in France's Pays de la Loire region to assess the prevalence of MSDs and their risk factors in the working population.
METHODS: The surveillance was based on a network of occupational physicians (OPs) and used the recommendations of a group of European experts (criteria document consensus). In 2002-2003, 80 of 400 OPs volunteered to participate. All underwent a training program to standardize the physical examination. Health status was assessed by self-

The primary objective of this research was the calculation of crude and specific rates of first-allowed, lost-time carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), epicondylitis, and rotator cuff syndrome/tear (RCS/RCT) claims in Ontario workers during 1997. A secondary objective was to determine if results related to these diagnoses were consistent with findings for all cumulative trauma disorders affecting the specific part of upper extremity region. Rates were calculated by combining claim counts and population "at-risk" estimates derived from the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board databases and Can

AIMS: (1) To evaluate an active method of surveillance of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). (2) To compare different criteria for deciding whether or not a work situation could be considered at high risk of MSDs in a large, modern shoe factory.
METHODS: A total of 253 blue collar workers were interviewed and examined by the same physician in 1996; 191 of them were re-examined in 1997. Risk factors of MSDs were assessed for each worker by standardised job site work analysis. Prevalence and incidence rates of carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff syndrome, and tension neck syndrome were calculat

Extrinsic compression of the rotator cuff by the coracoacromial arch has been accepted as a major factor in the etiology of bursitis, cuff tendonitis, and rotator cuff tears. Other etiologies for rotator cuff syndrome have also been proposed in various patient populations. These include repetitive microtrauma and underlying instability with tensile overload, particularly in the younger (younger than 35) athletic population. In this evolving field, the arthroscopist must to be able to recognize arthroscopic signs of impingement syndrome. Therefore, this paper discusses evaluating rotator cuff s

Next to the knee, the shoulder is the most common joint to be referred for MRI. Excellent soft tissue contrast and multiplanar acquisition provide optimal assessment of muscle, tendons, hyaline and fibrous cartilage, joint capsule, fat, bursae and bone marrow. In this article the most common indications for shoulder MRI are reviewed and discussed, but we focused primarily on the rotator cuff syndrome and shoulder instability. Correct diagnosis requires the use of appropriate pulse sequences and imaging planes, proper patient positioning, and a satisfactory surface coil. Moreover, technical imp

Chronic rotator-cuff syndrome with impingement is satisfactorily treated by acromioplasty by both open and arthroscopic techniques, but the Neer operation with deltoid detachment requires a prolonged rehabilitation. Arthroscopic acromioplasty reduces recovery time but is a difficult procedure. McShane, Leinberry and Fenlin (1987) described a conservative open anterior technique with good results and shortened rehabilitation. A similar technique has been used in 25 patients with an average age of 46 years. After a mean follow-up of 24 months, 80% were very satisfied and none was dissatisfied. T
