Proximal Iliotibial Band Syndrome, A Rare Diagnosis of Lateral Thigh Pain in A Nonathlete: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is typically associated with and commonly presents as distal knee pain, particularly in athletes. Proximal ITBS is a rare and underrecognized condition, especially in nonobese, nonathletic individuals. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 42-year-old woman with complaints of 6 months of progressive lateral hip and thigh pain. Clinical signs included tenderness over the iliac tubercle, and positive flexion, abduction, and external rotation and Ober's tests. Musculoskeletal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed proximal ITB inflammation

Successful Surgical Intervention for External Snapping Hip Syndrome in a Middle-Aged Woman.

BACKGROUND: Snapping hip syndrome is a condition characterized by a palpable or audible snap in the hip, particularly during movement. It can be asymptomatic and is categorized into external (lateral) and internal (medial) types. External snapping hip syndrome (ESHS), often due to the iliotibial band (ITB) flipping over the greater trochanter, is more common and usually responds to conservative treatments. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 44-year-old woman who experienced a sensation of hip dislocation and lateral pain in her right hip in the last 3 years which worsened over time. He

Iliotibial Band Syndrome Detected by Bloodpool SPECT/CT Using New 3D-Ring CZT System.

A 59-year-old woman runner was referred for left knee pain, with suspicion of stress fracture of the lateral femoral condyle. 99m Tc-HDP bone scintigraphy using a new 3D-ring CZT system (StarGuide) was performed. Blood pool SPECT/CT revealed hyperemia between the iliotibial band and the lateral femoral condyle of the left knee, suggestive of iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), while late-phase SPECT/CT did not demonstrate any abnormality in the left knee. The patient underwent an MRI, which confirmed ITBS. Our case emphasizes the potential of blood pool SPECT/CT using a new 3D-ring CZT system to

Effect of Power Output and Pedaling Cadence on Plantar Pressures in Professional Cyclists with Overuse Injuries.

Background: Plantar pressure analysis provides insight into load distribution at the foot-pedal interface during cycling; however, its modulation by pedaling power, cadence, and overuse injury status remains poorly understood by professional cyclists. It is unclear whether common overuse injuries, such as Achilles tendinopathy, patellofemoral pathology, and iliotibial band syndrome, are associated with distinct plantar loading patterns. This study aimed to characterize plantar pressure distribution in elite cyclists and determine how power, cadence, and injury status influence this pattern. Me

Common Risk Factors for Knee Injuries in Runners: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Knee injuries account for 25% to 30% of running-related injuries (RRIs). Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), and patellar tendinopathy (PT) are the most commonly reported knee injuries. The literature focuses on biomechanical factors, whose predictive value is inconsistent, and exposure-related factors remain underexplored. PURPOSE: To systematically review and synthesize the evidence on risk factors associated with knee injuries in endurance runners with a focus on both biomechanical and exposure-related factors. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review;

Three-dimensional treatment planning and target volume definition of tendinitis and bursitis - Consensus statement of the International Benign Target Volume Group (IBTVG).

Musculoskeletal disorders, particularly tendinitis and bursitis, are major contributors to global disability and healthcare burden. Low-dose radiotherapy (LDRT) has emerged as a promising treatment for refractory cases, demonstrating anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative effects, especially in inflammatory conditions. However, the lack of standardized treatment volumes hampers reproducibility, radiation safety, and broader clinical adoption. To address this gap, an international panel of experts applied the Delphi method to develop consensus-based target volumes for LDRT in common indicatio

Electromyography patterns during running in injured versus healthy runners: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Running injuries are frequently linked to biomechanical factors. Although there has been substantial research investigating the link between kinematic factors and running injury, there has been comparatively less focus on the role of muscle coordination. Previous literature has identified that altered EMG patterns may contribute to the overloading of tissues and to the development or persistence of injury. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to synthesize previous research comparing Electromyography (EMG) patterns between injured (Patellofemoral Pain, Achilles Tendinop

Screw-Thread Needle Mediated In Situ Delivery of Tangeretin@β-Cyclodextrin Sulfated Sodium Salt Complexes for the Therapy of Achilles Tendinitis.

Achilles tendinitis (AT) has posed as an intractable clinical problem, for which there is currently a lack of satisfactory treatment approaches. Local drug delivery has proven to be effective for AT therapy, but suitable drugs and local/sustained drug delivery technique for superior therapeutic effects are still in urgent need. In this work, screw-thread needle acupuncture-mediated in situ delivery of tangeretin@β-cyclodextrin sulfated sodium salt (TAN@CDs) complexes was developed for AT therapy. Briefly, TAN was firstly encapsulated into the cavity of CDs with a TAN loading rate of 4.6%. Then

Ultrasound Identification of Calcific Patellar Tendinitis After Patellar Fracture Fixation.

Calcific tendinopathy most commonly affects the rotator cuff, whereas involvement of the patellar tendon is exceedingly rare. Persistent anterior knee pain following patellar fracture fixation is usually attributed to postoperative stiffness, hardware irritation, or altered biomechanics, potentially leading to underrecognition of concomitant tendon pathology. Musculoskeletal ultrasound is well suited for evaluating postoperative tendon disorders because it enables detailed assessment of tendon abnormalities while simultaneously depicting adjacent soft tissues and surgical implants. This presen

Iliotibial band and lumbar spine pain - a hidden connection.

The iliotibial band (Latin: tractus iliotibialis; ITB) is most commonly associated with patellofemoral pain syndrome, also referred to as runner's knee. However, the impact of its imbalance on the lumbar spine is substantial and frequently overlooked. As a significant thickening of the fascia lata, the iliotibial band serves as a crucial component for the lateral stabilization of the entire kinematic chain of the lower extremity and the pelvis. Restricted tissue gliding, gluteus medius insufficiency and weakness of the core musculature may present as primary contributors to pain syndromes mani

Peripheral Nerve Entrapment Mimics of Overuse Syndromes: A Symptom-First Diagnostic Framework.

Repetitive use injuries are commonly seen by musculoskeletal providers, usually in the form of tendinopathies. However, focal peripheral nerve entrapment can mimic or coexist with tendon pathology, particularly when weakness, sensory symptoms, or imaging findings are subtle or nonspecific. This review provides a practical, symptom-first framework to help clinicians distinguish tendon-dominant, nerve-dominant, and mixed presentations in clinical practice. Five clinically relevant tendon-nerve mimic pairs are emphasized: (1) rotator cuff tendinopathy versus suprascapular neuropathy; (2) lateral

Treating insertional Achilles tendinitis with bio inductive collagen scaffold - Does it improve outcomes? A case series.

BACKGROUND: Achilles tendinopathy is a prevalent musculoskeletal condition, affecting approximately 6% of the population at some point in their lives. Insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT) is often associated with Haglund deformity (HD), and several surgical interventions exist to address this pathology. Bio-inductive Collagen Scaffolds (REGENETEN™ Smith & Nephew) is a novel bio-inductive scaffold that supports the body's intrinsic healing processes, promoting the growth of new tendon-like tissue. The application of Bio-inductive Collagen Scaffolds in the treatment of IAT and Haglund syndrom

Investigating the controversy surrounding statin therapy and Achilles tendinopathy using Mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between statin therapy and tendon injuries, particularly Achilles tendinopathy, which is the body's largest and strongest tendon, remains controversial. AIM: This study employed Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis to explore the causal link between statin therapy and Achilles tendinopathy (ATP). METHOD: Summary statistics were obtained from genome-wide association studies on statin medication and four specific statin drugs from public databases, as well as data related to two ATP phenotypes, namely Achilles tendinitis and Achilles tendon injury. Furthermore, a

Examining prior injury relative to Achilles tendon ruptures in National Basketball Association players.

The purpose of this study is to examine Achilles Tendon (AT) rupture and prior injury in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Publicly available data was sourced via two online databases and filtered to identify those reported as having sustained AT rupture. A full injury history was then generated for those players. A total of 51 AT ruptures were identified. Thirty-five per cent (18) had previously missed at least one game for "Achilles tendinitis" or "Achilles tendon injury" on the side of the affected limb. A further 18% were noted to have suffered plantar fasciitis or foot inflammati

Surgical Repair of Bilateral Achilles Tendon Rupture Following Levofloxacin Use.

Fluoroquinolones are widely used in the treatment of common infections such as urinary tract and airway infections. There have been reported adverse effects of causing tendinopathy and tendon ruptures, with limited case reports involving Achilles tendon rupture. Previously documented risk factors include concurrent steroid use as well as systemic diseases such as vascular or rheumatic disease. There is a scarcity in the literature involving acute bilateral Achilles tendon ruptures following fluoroquinolone usage and subsequent surgical treatment options. The purpose of this case report is to p
