USMSIT/NMUSIT Fundamental Guide on Diagnostic and Interventional Knee Ultrasonography.

Knee pain is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal complaints and a leading cause of disability, particularly in middle-aged and older adults. Owing to the knee's complex anatomy and its essential role in weight bearing and locomotion, an accurate diagnosis of knee disorders remains challenging. Although radiography and magnetic resonance imaging are indispensable for structural evaluation, musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) has gained recognition as an effective first-line imaging modality because of its real-time visualization, dynamic assessment capability, absence of ionizing radiation, a

Extreme Diagnostic and Therapeutic Heterogeneity Limits Treatment Conclusions in Iliotibial Band Syndrome: A Systematic Review with Level-of-Evidence Stratification.

BACKGROUND: Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a leading cause of lateral knee pain in runners and endurance athletes, yet clinical decision-making remains inconsistent and largely unsupported by high-quality comparative evidence. No comprehensive synthesis has previously integrated all available treatment modalities using a standardized evidence framework, and the evidence base for individual injection-based therapies continues to evolve rapidly. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate all available treatment strategies for ITBS and stratify their efficacy according to the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Me

Why Do Robotic Total Knee Arthroplasties Fail?

BACKGROUND: Robotic platforms can provide increased information and accuracy to the procedure of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, it is unclear whether these advantages translate to decreased failures over time. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe aseptic failures following robotic TKA by examining (1) types of failure and (2) subsequent procedures/reoperations. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 2,648 robotic TKAs with a single robotic platform performed at our institution between January 1, 2016, and May 31, 2024. There were 1,303 men and 1,345 women who had a mean

Are running biomechanics different between females and males with knee injuries? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To synthesise the evidence comparing lower limb running biomechanics between females and males with knee injuries. METHODS: We searched six databases (Medline, Embase, Cinahl, SPORTdiscus, Web of Science, and Scopus) from inception to October 2025. We included studies that reported biomechanical data separately for females and males with knee injuries (e.g. patellofemoral pain (PFP), iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLr)) during running using three-dimensional motion capture and/or force plates. Risk of bias and the quality of biomechanical

Successful Surgical Intervention for External Snapping Hip Syndrome in a Middle-Aged Woman.

BACKGROUND: Snapping hip syndrome is a condition characterized by a palpable or audible snap in the hip, particularly during movement. It can be asymptomatic and is categorized into external (lateral) and internal (medial) types. External snapping hip syndrome (ESHS), often due to the iliotibial band (ITB) flipping over the greater trochanter, is more common and usually responds to conservative treatments. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 44-year-old woman who experienced a sensation of hip dislocation and lateral pain in her right hip in the last 3 years which worsened over time. He

Iliotibial Band Syndrome Detected by Bloodpool SPECT/CT Using New 3D-Ring CZT System.

A 59-year-old woman runner was referred for left knee pain, with suspicion of stress fracture of the lateral femoral condyle. 99m Tc-HDP bone scintigraphy using a new 3D-ring CZT system (StarGuide) was performed. Blood pool SPECT/CT revealed hyperemia between the iliotibial band and the lateral femoral condyle of the left knee, suggestive of iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), while late-phase SPECT/CT did not demonstrate any abnormality in the left knee. The patient underwent an MRI, which confirmed ITBS. Our case emphasizes the potential of blood pool SPECT/CT using a new 3D-ring CZT system to

Effect of Power Output and Pedaling Cadence on Plantar Pressures in Professional Cyclists with Overuse Injuries.

Background: Plantar pressure analysis provides insight into load distribution at the foot-pedal interface during cycling; however, its modulation by pedaling power, cadence, and overuse injury status remains poorly understood by professional cyclists. It is unclear whether common overuse injuries, such as Achilles tendinopathy, patellofemoral pathology, and iliotibial band syndrome, are associated with distinct plantar loading patterns. This study aimed to characterize plantar pressure distribution in elite cyclists and determine how power, cadence, and injury status influence this pattern. Me

Common Risk Factors for Knee Injuries in Runners: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Knee injuries account for 25% to 30% of running-related injuries (RRIs). Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), and patellar tendinopathy (PT) are the most commonly reported knee injuries. The literature focuses on biomechanical factors, whose predictive value is inconsistent, and exposure-related factors remain underexplored. PURPOSE: To systematically review and synthesize the evidence on risk factors associated with knee injuries in endurance runners with a focus on both biomechanical and exposure-related factors. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review;

Electromyography patterns during running in injured versus healthy runners: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Running injuries are frequently linked to biomechanical factors. Although there has been substantial research investigating the link between kinematic factors and running injury, there has been comparatively less focus on the role of muscle coordination. Previous literature has identified that altered EMG patterns may contribute to the overloading of tissues and to the development or persistence of injury. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to synthesize previous research comparing Electromyography (EMG) patterns between injured (Patellofemoral Pain, Achilles Tendinop

Iliotibial band and lumbar spine pain - a hidden connection.

The iliotibial band (Latin: tractus iliotibialis; ITB) is most commonly associated with patellofemoral pain syndrome, also referred to as runner's knee. However, the impact of its imbalance on the lumbar spine is substantial and frequently overlooked. As a significant thickening of the fascia lata, the iliotibial band serves as a crucial component for the lateral stabilization of the entire kinematic chain of the lower extremity and the pelvis. Restricted tissue gliding, gluteus medius insufficiency and weakness of the core musculature may present as primary contributors to pain syndromes mani

Peripheral Nerve Entrapment Mimics of Overuse Syndromes: A Symptom-First Diagnostic Framework.

Repetitive use injuries are commonly seen by musculoskeletal providers, usually in the form of tendinopathies. However, focal peripheral nerve entrapment can mimic or coexist with tendon pathology, particularly when weakness, sensory symptoms, or imaging findings are subtle or nonspecific. This review provides a practical, symptom-first framework to help clinicians distinguish tendon-dominant, nerve-dominant, and mixed presentations in clinical practice. Five clinically relevant tendon-nerve mimic pairs are emphasized: (1) rotator cuff tendinopathy versus suprascapular neuropathy; (2) lateral

Musculoskeletal mimics for lumbosacral radiculopathy. Part 2: Specific disorders.

Lumbosacral radiculopathy is a common disorder evaluated by the electrodiagnostic medicine (EDX) consultant. Making this task difficult is the abundance of radiculopathy mimics. Peripheral neurologic mimics are common, but musculoskeletal mimics are not rare and may be less familiar to many EDX consultants. Awareness of the most common musculoskeletal mimickers-particularly key historical and physical examination features that can distinguish them from radiculopathies-can lead to an accurate diagnosis for the patient and referring provider. Part 1 of this monograph covered theoretical issues s

Identification of pro-fibrotic cellular subpopulations in fascia of gluteal muscle contracture using single-cell RNA sequencing.

Fibrosis is a common and integral pathological feature in various chronic diseases, capable of affecting any tissue or organ. Fibrosis within deep fascia is implicated in many myofascial disorders, including gluteal muscle contracture (GMC), Dupuytren's disease, plantar fasciitis, iliotibial band syndrome, and chronic muscle pain. Despite its clinical significance, deep fascia fibrosis remains considerably under-researched compared to other fibrotic conditions. Single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) has been used to investigate cellular heterogeneity in fibrotic tissues. However, to our knowle

Research hotspots and current status of iliotibial band studies: A bibliometric analysis (1934-2023).

BACKGROUND: The iliotibial band (ITB), a unique musculoskeletal structure, is gaining interest in various fields such as biomechanics, orthopedics, sports medicine, and rehabilitation medicine. The pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of ITB-related diseases are controversial. Despite an increasing number of studies, there is a lack of organized literature sorting and hotspot analysis. This study aims to comprehensively analyze publications related to the ITB and summarize the research focal points and current state in this domain. METHODS: Literature characteristics were extracted from th
