MR findings in iliotibial band syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the MR findings in iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: The subjects comprised four patients (five knees) with lateral knee pain: two athletes and two non-athletes. One non-athlete was engaged in work requiring repetitive knee movement, and the other suffered from Cushing syndrome and had bilateral abnormalities. All patients were suspected of having a lateral meniscal tear prior to MR examination, but physical examination following provisional MR diagnosis warranted the final diagnosis. MR studies included fast spin echo sagittal imaging, fat-saturated

Magnetic resonance imaging of iliotibial band syndrome.

Seven cases of iliotibial band syndrome and the pathoanatomic findings of each, as demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging, are presented. These findings were compared with magnetic resonance imaging scans of 10 age- and sex-matched control knees without evidence of lateral knee pain. Magnetic resonance imaging signal consistent with fluid was seen deep to the iliotibial band in the region of the lateral femoral epicondyle in five of the seven cases. Additionally, when compared with the control group, patients with iliotibial band syndrome demonstrated a significantly thicker iliotibial ban

Iliotibial band syndrome in cyclists.

Iliotibial band syndrome is an overuse injury caused by repetitive friction of the iliotibial band across the lateral femoral epicondyle. Once considered an injury indigenous to runners, it is now frequently being seen in cyclists. The purpose of this paper is to identify iliotibial band syndrome as a significant problem in cyclists and to propose both operative and nonoperative measures for treating cyclists. Nonoperative measures specific to cyclists consist of bicycle adjustments and training modifications. These are adjunctive therapies to stretching, icing, rest, and oral nonsteroidal ant

Practical, Conservative Management of IIiotibial Band Syndrome.

In brief Inflammation of the iliotibial brief band at the lateral femoral epicondyle-called iliotibial band syndrome-can be treated effectively with a two-phase conservative regimen. Phase 1, for treating the initial symptoms, involves anti-inflammatory drugs, icing, stretching, and using a knee immobilizer and crutches. In phase 2, which focuses on return to activity, the patient continues the stretches and runs to the point of feeling iliotibial band tightness, but not pain.

Is Ilotibial Band Syndrome Often Overlooked?

In brief Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is caused by training errors but may be influenced by anatomic and dynamic factors. The diagnosis involves matching a complete and accurate history with characteristic pain over and around the lateral femoral epicondyle. The authors studied US Marine recruits in basic training and found an incidence that suggests ITBS may be underdiagnosed. Treatment usually involves simple measures such as rest and stretching exercises, but surgical resection is sometimes necessary.

Iliotibial band syndrome.

The iliotibial band syndrome is most often diagnosed in runners but can be found in athletes who participate in other sports. From our experience most patients are high mileage runners with shoes either worn out or with insufficient cushioning. A total of 19 athletes with this condition have been seen in the past 3 years. Treatment consisted of rest or decreased distance, shoe changes, modification in exercise technique, anti-inflammatory medication, steroid injections and stretching. Surgery was not required.

Epidemiology of soft-tissue/musculoskeletal injury among U.S. Marine recruits undergoing basic training.

We determined the incidence of soft-tissue/musculoskeletal injury occurring during 8,076 recruit-months at risk among recruits undergoing basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California, between January and April 1990. We analyzed International Classification of Disease codes relating to initial visit for injuries, and calculated recruit-months from weekly strength figures. Training-related injuries occurred at a rate of 19.9 injuries per 100 recruit-months. Within the sports medicine clinic, iliotibial band syndrome (22.4%), patellar tendinitis (15.1%), and mechanical low

Iliotibial band syndrome in distance runners.

Iliotibial band syndrome was diagnosed in 48 of 1030 runners treated for lower extremity musculoskeletal complaints. Most athletes had been running 20 to 40 miles a week for one year or longer and had significantly changed their distance, speed, terrain, surface, and/or shoes before the onset of symptoms. Symptoms often persisted for 2 to 6 months. All runners were treated conservatively with rest, stretching, reduced distance, anti-inflammatory medications, local cortisone injections and/or orthoses.

The nature and response to therapy of 196 consecutive injuries seen at a runners' clinic.

We studied a series of 196 running injuries to determine the nature of the common injuries, the type of runners with the different injuries, specific factors causing the most common injuries, and the response of these injuries to correction of the biomechanical abnormalities believed to cause them. The four commonest injuries were 'runner's knee' (peripatellar pain syndrome) (22%), 'shin splints' (posterior tibial stress syndrome) (18%), the iliotibial band friction syndrome (12%), and chronic muscle injuries (11%). Within 8 weeks of following the biomechanically based treatment regimen, betwe
