INTRODUCTION: Calcaneal fractures are rare injuries constituting 2% of all fractures. Fractures of calcaneum correspond to nearly 60-75% of the tarsal bone fractures. The calcaneum is the most commonly fractured tarsal bone 90% occur in males between 21 and 45 years of age. The calcaneal fracture may be extra-articular (sparing the subtalar joint) and intra-articular involving the subtalar joint. Intra-articular fractures account for approximately 75% of calcaneal fractures and have been associated with poor functional outcomes. In this study, we aim to assess the functional outcome of interna

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Stability of the peroneal tendon and lateral ankle structure is essential. Appropriate treatment is mandatory to improve the outcome.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old female has had ankle pain for around six months. She has a history of falling while getting downstairs. A physical examination around the lateral ankle revealed slight local swelling and tenderness. Advanced radiography shows peroneal inflammation, subluxation, and an Anterior Talo-Fibular Ligament (ATFL) tear. The patient was diagnosed with peroneal tendinitis with subluxation of the peroneal longus

BACKGROUND: Peroneal tendon injuries are a common cause of lateral ankle pain and instability. While the use of hamstring autograft has been proposed as a viable surgical option for peroneus brevis reconstruction, reported outcomes with this technique are limited in the literature. We present patient-reported and clinical outcomes for patients who underwent peroneus brevis reconstruction with hamstring autograft.
METHODS: Thirty-one patients were retrospectively identified who underwent a procedure including peroneus brevis reconstruction with hamstring autograft for peroneal tendinopathy bet

Surgeons should understand the anatomic, vascular, biomechanical, and predisposing factors related to lateral ankle instability and peroneal tendon injuries, including peroneal tendinitis and tenosynovitis, peroneal tendon tears and ruptures, as well as peroneal tendon subluxation and dislocation. Surgeons should understand the treatment options and recommendations for patients who have lateral ankle instability and peroneal tendon injuries from the perspective of a sports medicine foot and ankle specialist. In addition, surgeons should be aware of arthroscopic approaches and an algorithm for

BACKGROUND: In patients with Achilles tendinosis, Achilles tendon debridement can be supplemented with flexor hallucis longus tendon transfer. Outcomes have not been studied prospectively in older, sedentary, and overweight patients.
METHODS: Fifty-eight consecutive limbs in fifty-six consecutive older, sedentary patients with insertional or midsubstance Achilles tendinosis were enrolled prospectively and underwent the procedure. Ten patients were lost to follow-up, leaving forty-eight limbs in forty-six patients available for evaluation after twenty-four months.
RESULTS: The forty-six patie

OBJECTIVE: Debate continues regarding the management of calcaneal fractures, between open reduction and internal fixation and closed treatment. Hence we aim at evaluating the radiological and functional outcomes of open reduction and internal fixation in displaced joint depression type of calcaneal fractures fixed with locking calcaneal plate.
METHODS: In this series, 28 patients (26 unilateral and 2 bilateral) with joint depression type of calcaneal fractures as per Essex-Lopresti classification system were operated on with locking calcaneal plate within 3 weeks of injury. Patients were eval

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate patients who had open reduction and external fixation of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures with supercutaneous calcaneal locking plates used as external fixators.
METHODS: Between October 2007 and June 2009, 25 cases were performed. According to the Sanders classification system, 17 cases were type IIA and there were two cases each of type IIB, type IIC, type IIIAC, and type IV. Three months after surgery, when imaging studies confirmed bone union, the plates and screws were removed in the outpatient clinic. The

The lateral ligament complex of the ankle is the most frequently injured structure in the body. Although most simple ankle sprains do not result in long-term disability, a significant number do not completely resolve, leading to residual symptoms that may persist for years. The most commonly reported symptoms, particularly among athletes, include instability, re-injury, and tendinitis. Ballet dancers are a combination of artist and high-performance athlete; consequently, they are subjected to the same types of injuries as other athletes, including lateral ankle sprains and their sequelae. Furt

BACKGROUND: Posterolateral antiglide plating of unstable AO-type B lateral malleolar fractures is biomechanically stronger than lateral plating and causes less wound healing problems and less frequent hardware removal. However, the distal end of the plate or the screws may cause peroneal tendinitis. The limits of safe hardware placement have not been established.
METHOD: A retrospective analysis of 70 patients was done to determine hardware position and identify peroneal tendon lesions. An adjunct study involved dissection of the retromalleolar region in 10 embalmed cadaver specimens to study

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to identify pressure changes throughout the peroneal groove after a groove deepening procedure. We hypothesized that pressures would decrease.
METHODS: Twelve fresh-frozen foot and ankle specimens were used. A thin pressure strip containing four sensor pads was secured within the peroneal groove with pads 1 through 4 positioned at the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) and at the distal, middle, and proximal groove, respectively. The midstance phase of gait was simulated with loads applied to the plantar foot and posterior tibial tendon and to the peroneus l

Cavovarus foot deformity, which often results from an imbalance of muscle forces, is commonly caused by hereditary motor sensory neuropathies. Other causes are cerebral palsy, cerebral injury (stroke), anterior horn cell disease (spinal root injury), talar neck injury, and residual clubfoot. In cavovarus foot deformity, the relatively strong peroneus longus and tibialis posterior muscles cause a hindfoot varus and forefoot valgus (pronated) position. Hindfoot varus causes overload of the lateral border of the foot, resulting in ankle instability, peroneal tendinitis, and stress fracture. Degen

The results of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation in skeletally immature children at one institution were reviewed. Six children with seven displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation were reviewed at an average of 30 months after surgery (range 18-48 months). All children were treated by one of two surgeons and followed by the same surgeon. The preoperative workup included computed tomography scans, which showed that all had displaced intra-articular fractures and five had comminut

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Peroneal tendon injuries are probably frequently overlooked causes of lateral ankle pain after distorsion trauma. We report a series of 38 patients with peroneal tendon injuries and outcome after operation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The mean age of the patients was 30 years (range, 13 to 61). All patients were operated by the same orthopaedic surgeon (SO) and the final outcome was evaluated.
RESULTS: Eighty-two per cent of the patients were competitive athletes. There were 11 partial and 3 total ruptures of the peroneus brevis tendon (PBT), 2 partial and 2 total ruptures of

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate our protocol with the modified skin incision without bone graft in the treatment of intra-articular calcaneal fractures in a consecutive series.
METHODS: Thirty-three displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures operatively treated by a single surgeon were evaluated. Each fracture was managed according to a standardized protocol that included an oblique lateral incision and stable internal fixation, without supplemental bone graft. Fractures were classified according to two accepted criteria. Patients were evaluated with serial clinical a

This is a prospective study that examines 32 patients who were treated with posterior plating of a displaced Weber B fibula fracture and had a minimum of 1 year follow-up. The surgical technique included application of an unbent one-third tubular plate to the posterior aspect of the fibula using the antiglide technique. Twenty-seven fractures were classified as supination-eversion IV: 13 with deltoid disruption and 14 with a medial malleolar fracture. Three were classified as pronation-abduction and two as low pronation-eversion fractures at the level of the plafond. A six-hole plate was used

The painful os trigonum syndrome is one cause of posterolateral ankle pain. This syndrome is most prevalent in athletes who perform frequent and/or forceful plantar flexion. The painful os trigonum may be misdiagnosed as Achilles and/or peroneal tendinitis. In this case, the patient was misdiagnosed for 15 months and treated for tendinitis. The appropriate clinical tests to evaluate the os trigonum as a source of posterolateral ankle pain are outlined. The surgical and postoperative management for the patient are discussed. Clinicians should be aware of the painful os trigonum syndrome as a po
