Factors associated with first recurrence of accidental foreign body incidents: a retrospective cohort study in children.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body incidents are common pediatric emergencies, but evidence on factors associated with first recurrence is limited. This study aims to identify risk factors for first recurrence using large single-center data. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 48 197 children at a tertiary hospital (2020-2025). Kaplan-Meier analysis and multivariate Cox regression were performed. Schoenfeld residuals assessed the PH assumption; piecewise Cox models served as sensitivity analyses for age group and anatomical location, which violated it. RESULTS: In a large single-cent

Comparison of bone regeneration in rabbit calvarial defects following the use of two different xenografts with a barrier membrane: A histological, histomorphometric, and micro-computed tomography study.

BACKGROUND: This study compared bone regeneration in rabbit calvarial defects using two different xenografts with a barrier membrane by histological, histomorphometric, and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analyses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was designed as a single-blind interventional experimental animal study that conducted on 20 male New Zealand rabbits. The rabbits were anesthetized, a full-thickness mucoperiosteal flap was elevated, and four bone defects with 8 mm diameter were created in their calvaria at the two sides of their midsagittal suture. Two defects were randomly

Comparative in vitro and in vivo assessment of three experimental extracellular matrix meshes for soft tissue remodeling.

The development of standardized cross-species evaluation frameworks is urgently needed for absorbable extracellular matrix (ECM) meshes, due to significant variations in safety and efficacy across tissue sources. This study establishes a multi-dimensional assessment system to quantify material-specific bio-functional correlations. Three ECM meshes-human acellular dermis (HAD), porcine acellular dermis (PAD), and porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS)-were systematically characterized using integrated in vitro and in vivo analyses. Assessments included physicochemical properties (e.g., degrad

Case Report: Synchronous lingual osseous choristoma and suprahyoid thyroglossal duct cyst: insights into the embryological thyroglossal-hyoid axis.

Lingual osseous choristoma is an exceedingly rare benign lesion characterized by the presence of mature bone tissue within the soft tissue of the tongue, where osseous structures are not normally found. Thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDCs) are common congenital midline neck lesions resulting from incomplete involution of the thyroglossal duct during embryogenesis. Both entities share a common embryological pathway extending from the tongue base through the hyoid bone to the lower cervical region. However, the synchronous occurrence of a lingual osseous choristoma and a suprahyoid TGDC in a single p

[Study on the Application of Optical Fiber Light Transmission Method in the Removal of Soft Tissue Foreign Bodies].

To address the current challenges of difficult removal and potential residuals of soft tissue foreign bodies, this paper utilizes the principle of different light reflection degrees between foreign bodies and tissues to construct a foreign body localization device based on modified PMMA optical fibers. An optical fiber light transmission method is designed for the localization of soft tissue foreign bodies. To verify the practicality and reliability of the device, tests and comparisons are conducted on biological tissue models. The results show that the device can locate foreign bodies more ef

EVT-Inspired Simplified Negative-Pressure Nasoesophageal Drainage for Cervical Abscess Secondary to Esophageal Perforation.

BACKGROUND Esophageal foreign body perforation is a critical emergency needing prompt diagnosis and intervention. The innovative esophageal vacuum therapy (EVT) has been proven effective in the treatment of esophageal perforations and fistulas. However, its high cost and technical complexity limit its widespread use in primary care facilities. CASE REPORT A 52-year-old man presented after 4 days of odynophagia and 1 day of fever following accidental fish bone ingestion. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated cervical esophageal perforation with soft-tissue emphysema. Endoscopy revealed a 5-mm p

Novel Granulectomy Technique and Intralesional Triamcinolone for Liquid Injectable Silicone-Induced Chin Granulomas: A Long-Term Ambidirectional Cohort Study.

Background: Liquid injectable silicone (LIS) is controversially used for soft-tissue augmentation, frequently causing severe, late-onset foreign body granulomas. Complete surgical removal is nearly impossible due to silicone migration, with residues leading to high recurrence. Meanwhile, medical therapies alone do not address macroscopic structural deformity. This study evaluates a combined protocol of subdermal granulectomy followed by adjuvant intralesional steroids for chin siliconomas. Methods: An ambidirectional cohort study (2015-2025) evaluated 35 patients with LIS-induced chin granulom

Three-dimensional Bovine Collagen-Elastin Matrix in Soft Tissue Reconstruction: No Detectable Bovine DNA After 1 Year.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative wound healing remains a critical challenge, particularly in complex reconstructions such as free flap surgeries. Despite technical improvements, perfusion-related complications may cause partial flap loss. Following wound stabilization, secondary measures such as vacuum-assisted closure therapy and skin grafting are required. Three-dimensional bovine collagen-elastin matrices offer promising support by enhancing cell migration, angiogenesis, and tissue regeneration. METHODS: We report the case of a 43-year-old woman who developed partial necrosis after deep inferior

Heterotopic ossification of the esophagus identified during surgical management of esophageal carcinoma.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of mature lamellar bone within soft tissues and is most commonly associated with trauma or neurologic injury. Gastrointestinal involvement is exceedingly rare, with only one prior reported case of esophageal HO in association with Barrett's esophagus. The pathogenesis remains poorly understood but is thought to involve chronic inflammation and dysregulated mesenchymal cell differentiation. We report a rare case of heterotopic ossification of the esophagus identified during the diagnostic evaluation and surgical management of esophageal squamous ce

A broken mercury thermometer in the orbital cavity.

INTRODUCTION: Elemental mercury exposure is an important public health concern. Direct soft tissue exposure to mercury is rare and can lead to local inflammatory reactions and complications if not promptly addressed. CASE SUMMARY: We report a 4-year-old boy with a foreign body intrusion to the left periorbital region after he fell onto a glass mercury thermometer. The thermometer head, containing elemental mercury, was embedded beneath the lower eyelid skin. Initial symptoms were minimal, but two months later, the patient developed swelling and a palpable mass. Fibrous tissue, glass, and leak

From Oversight to Outcome: Addressing the Challenges of Foreign Body Management in Temporal Soft-Tissue Injuries.

This case report details the importance of thorough pre-operative assessment and management of soft tissue degloving injuries to prevent complications. A 55-year-old female experienced pain and bleeding in the right temporal region following a road traffic accident. After the initial suturing, she developed increasing pain, swelling, and purulent discharge, prompting a reassessment. Initially diagnosed with a soft tissue injury and no visible foreign bodies, a CT scan later revealed foreign objects in the temporal region as symptoms persisted. Emergency surgery was performed to remove the fore

Foreign Body Entrapment on the Bearing Surface in Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Report of Three Cases.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a highly effective surgical intervention for end-stage hip joint disorders. While common complications such as infection, dislocation, and prosthetic loosening are well-documented, rarer complications remain underreported. One such complication is foreign body interposition on the bearing surface, which can compromise joint mechanics and adversely affect outcomes. This study presents three cases of foreign body interposition involving soft tissue, bone fragments, and cement debris, observed postoperatively in patients undergoing THA. In the first case, a 79-year

Residual foreign body inflammation caused by a lumber beam penetrating the facial region: a case report.

Penetrating wounds to the face are cosmetically devastating and can be life-threatening. If the foreign body causing the penetrating wound is a piece of wood, small remnants might be left behind after the initial treatment. A 33-year-old male patient presented to the emergency center after a piece of lumber pierced his face as a passenger in a traffic accident. The patient's vital signs were stable, and emergency surgery was performed to remove the foreign body and repair the soft tissue. No noteworthy complications were seen after open reduction and internal fixation of the facial bone fractu

Histology of tendon and enthesis - suitable techniques for specific research questions.

The musculoskeletal system consists of different components comprising a wide range of tissue types, with tendons being one part. Tendon degeneration or rupture have a high prevalence in all age groups, often with poor outcomes of surgical treatment such as chronic pain and high re-tear rates. Therefore, much effort has been directed to further develop diagnostic and therapeutic methods as well as reconstruction techniques, including using adequate placeholders or implants. Diagnostic approaches and advanced stages of preclinical studies will inevitably include histological examination of the
