BACKGROUND: The anterior approach for cervical discectomy with methacrylate-implant involves manipulations on vertebral bodies and ligaments. We present a 50-year-old male patient with an ossifying fibromyxoid tumour (OFMT) of the prethyroidal soft parts infiltrating the thyroid gland in coincidence with recurrent goitre, 20 years after strumectomy. The tumour, initially misdiagnosed as thyroid carcinoma and malignant schwannoma respectively, was histologically composed of typical solid cell-formations and shelly-like mature bone at the periphery. In addition, in the tissue adjacent to the tumour some foreign body granulomas with suture material and small proliferating nerves were present as a residual of the preceding strumectomy.

We examined soft tissue biopsies from 26 patients with symptomatic nerve root fibrosis and arachnoiditis after a previous laminectomy. Dense fibrous connective tissue was found about the nerve roots and in 14 cases (55%) fibrillar foreign material was seen within it. This material had the histochemical characteristics of cotton fibres from swabs and neurosurgical patties. A 34-year-old white man presented with severe penile cellulitis following injection of epoxy glue into the shaft of the penis. Preoperative xeroradiography and ultrasonography localized the hardened masses of glue to the left corpus cavernosum and subcutaneous tissues. The jaws of 368 edentulous patients are evaluated radiographically and the findings presented. Patients were selected at random from those attending the Oral Diagnostic Clinic of the Dental School of the University of Athens.
