Structural Optimization and Fatigue Performance Evaluation of Balloon-Expandable Aortic Valve Stents.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a critical therapy for aortic stenosis, but most existing valve stents are designed for Western patients, whose aortic root anatomy differs from Chinese patients characterized by smaller annulus diameters, heavier calcification, and a higher prevalence of bicuspid valves. To address this mismatch, we designed a balloon-expandable aortic valve stent tailored for Chinese patients and systematically evaluated its performance. Four structural schemes were considered; a diamond-hexagonal composite mesh was selected based on radial strength, expansio

Experimental Study on the Fatigue Life of Low-Carbon Steel DD11: Combination of Pre-Strain and Notch Effect.

This paper is intended to study the fatigue behaviour of low-carbon steel DD11 with the combined effect of pre-strain and notch geometry, which are important in components working under cyclic loading in service. To this end, experimental fatigue tests were performed on specimens with different configurations: (i) specimens pre-strained to 24% (beyond the tensile strength point), (ii) specimens combining pre-strain and notch effects, and (iii) double-notched specimens, which feature a higher stress concentration factor. The experiments were complemented by numerical simulations and analytical

Mechanistic Elucidation of Dynamic Deformation Transitions and Energy Absorption in Gyroid Structures Across Relative Densities and Compression Velocities.

Understanding the rate-dependent deformation and energy absorption behavior of architected lattice structures is essential for developing lightweight impact-resistant materials. This study investigates the effects of loading rate and relative density on the mechanical response of additively manufactured acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) gyroid structures. Quasi-static and dynamic compression experiments were conducted, and PAM-CRASH finite element simulations were validated against the experimentally investigated compression conditions and subsequently used to explore responses beyond the

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of End-Tab Geometry Effects on the Compressive Response of Ultra-Thick CFRP Laminates.

Compression testing of ultra-thick carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates requires high loads to be transferred over a limited gripping length, while the stiffness discontinuity at the end-tab termination can initiate unintended local failure. This study examines the effects of taper geometry and tab thickness through combined-loading compression tests on four end-tab configurations, surface-strain measurements, fractography, and three-dimensional finite-element analysis. Multiple intralaminar failure indices were evaluated, and a Ye-type index was used to assess interlaminar initiat

Experimental Study on Static Strength and Fatigue of CNT-Modified CFRP Laminates.

In this paper, an experimental study on the static strength and fatigue of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates with ply angles of 0°, ±15° and ±45° and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) of 3% mass fraction in epoxy matrix has been presented to systematically demonstrate the SWCNT-modified effect on the static tensile properties and fatigue behavior of the CFRP laminates. The results of pseudo-static tensile tests show that the addition of SWCNTs increases the tensile strength of the three laminates by 37%, 43%, and 34%, respectively, and the elastic modulus by 5%, 62%, and 3

Adjunct rim plating for selected pilon fracture patterns: Lessons from hyperextension tibial plateau fractures.

BACKGROUND: Pilon fractures frequently involve small anterior or anterolateral marginal fragments that are susceptible to shear displacement and may not be reliably controlled by conventional periarticular plates. Rim plating is a fragment-specific, low-profile juxta-articular buttress technique that has demonstrated favorable biomechanical and clinical results in selected tibial plateau fracture patterns. This review examines the rationale for extending this concept to selected pilon fracture patterns. METHODS: We performed a narrative review of clinical, cadaveric, and biomechanical studies

Non-equimolar stereocomplex polylactide fibers strengthen and toughen poly(L-lactic acid) via interfacial stereocomplexation while retaining transparency.

In this work, stereocomplex PLA (SC-PLA) fibers with various PLLA/PDLA mass ratios were fabricated and subsequently incorporated into the poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) matrix to prepare all-PLA composites. By deviating from the stoichiometric ratio toward PDLA excess, in situ interfacial stereocomplexation was triggered, converting the initially weak fiber-matrix interface into a robust stereocomplex (SC)-mediated interface. Remarkably, although the PDLA-rich SC-PLA fibers (LD12) exhibited the lowest intrinsic SC crystallinity (35.1%), the corresponding composite showed the highest SC content and

Novel Insights into the Biochemistry of Citrate and Its Transporters: Relevance to Metabolic Rewiring, Tumor Microenvironment, and Bone Metastasis in Cancer.

Citrate intersects multiple biochemical pathways, yet its role in cancer has received limited attention. Similarly, the Na+-coupled citrate transporter (SLC13A5) has been investigated extensively in connection with epileptic encephalopathy, but its relevance to cancer remains understudied. This review focuses on novel insights into citrate biology and SLC13A5 that suggest a tumor-promoting role for SLC13A5/citrate. Cytosolic citrate is the building block for fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis necessary for membrane biogenesis and serves as a signaling molecule in regulating mitophagy and pro

Polyethylene glenospheres in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty have greater long-term implant survivorship than metallic glenospheres: A New Zealand Joint Registry Study.

BACKGROUND: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) is increasingly common and clinically effective. Conventional-bearing rTSA (CB-rTSA) employs a metallic glenosphere articulating with a polyethylene humeral liner. Inverted-bearing rTSA (IB-rTSA), using a polyethylene glenosphere with a metallic or ceramic humeral liner, was developed to eliminate polyethylene wear debris at the scapular neck and thereby reduce polyethylene-induced osteolysis and the severity of scapular notching. Comparative data on survivorship and patient-reported outcomes between these configurations remain limited. Th

Non-union of Bone Plating in a Mandibular Fracture With Osteomyelitis: A Case Report.

Mandibular fractures are a common occurrence, often associated with complex complications such as non-union and osteomyelitis. Non-union, the failure of a fracture to heal, can be particularly challenging in the mandible due to the limited soft tissue coverage and compromised blood supply in atrophic areas. Additionally, the presence of osteomyelitis, a bone infection, further complicates the healing process and increases the risk of implant failure. This case report aims to provide an overview of the management strategies for non-union of bone plating with mandibular fracture associated with

Mechanically stable but biologically inactive Jones fracture nonunion managed without immediate revision surgery: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Jones fractures are prone to delayed union and nonunion because of the vascular characteristics and mechanical loading environment of the fifth metatarsal metaphyseal-diaphyseal junction. Although nonunion is often attributed to mechanical insufficiency, host-related biological and functional factors may also be clinically relevant in selected cases. We report an illustrative case of Jones fracture nonunion with maintained implant integrity and radiographic stability that united without immediate revision surgery after integrated clinical assessment and management. Early clinical and radiographic outcomes of robot-assisted femoral neck system fixation combined with an additional cannulated compression screw for garden IV femoral neck fractures in young and middle-aged adults: a propensity score-matched retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Garden IV femoral neck fractures in young and middle-aged adults are highly unstable and prone to shortening, nonunion, and femoral head necrosis. We compared robot-assisted femoral neck system (FNS) fixation plus an additional cannulated compression screw (CCS) in a multiplanar configuration with robot-assisted FNS fixation alone. METHODS: This retrospective cohort included 172 patients aged 18-60 years who were treated from June 2024 to June 2025; 82 underwent robot-assisted FNS plus CCS fixation and 90 underwent robot-assisted FNS fixation alone. The impact of osteoporosis on spinal biomechanical stability in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a narrative review of finite element analysis and bone mineral density assessment.

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a complex three-dimensional spinal deformity whose precise etiology and pathological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In recent years, increasing attention has focused on the association between the prevalent phenomenon of reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporosis in AIS patients and spinal biomechanical stability. This review aims to summarize the epidemiological characteristics and assessment methods of osteoporosis in AIS, with a primary focus on elucidating how it contributes to curve progression by influencing the spine's mechan
