The purpose of the investigation was to test the use of alendronate in the therapy of children affected by chronic rheumatic diseases and symptomatic drug-induced osteoporosis. Two courses of alendronate were intravenously administered to four girls with vertebral fractures that were glucocorticoid induced. Improvement of back pain and bone mineral density increase evaluated by DXA and conventional spine X-rays were observed. Our study supports the ABD-induced improvement of the negative effects of long-term therapy on bone mineral density in children with chronic rheumatic diseases.

The authors submit an investigation of 60 patients with senile, post-menopausal and drug-induced osteoporosis. Using the method of absorption spectrophotometry, they found a reduced level of Mg in red blood cells in 63.6% of senile, 66.7% postmenopausal and only in 22.2% drug-induced osteoporoses. Also the mean level of red cell magnesium was significantly lower in the group of senile (1.94 mmol) and postmenopausal (1.85 mmol) osteoporosis as compared with drug-induced osteoporosis (2.25 mmol). The authors revealed moreover that the level of red cell magnesium in the former two groups declines

Use of corticosteroids has been most frequently associated with bone loss, but heparin and methotrexate, when used in relatively high doses, have also been linked to the development of osteoporosis. Clinical features of bone loss associated with these agents, possible pathophysiologic mechanisms, and strategies for avoiding this complication are reviewed.
