Age-related bone mineral density patterns in a large German clinical DXA cohort: device-specific comparisons with international reference populations.

UNLABELLED: In a large German clinical DXA cohort, comparisons with international reference populations were strongly device-dependent. iDXA values were consistently lower, whereas Prodigy Pro values showed closer but age- and cohort-dependent agreement. The data should not be interpreted as scanner-independent German normative reference values. PURPOSE: To describe age-related bone mineral density patterns in a German DXA cohort and to compare device-specific femoral neck (FN) and total hip (TH) standardized BMD values with international reference cohorts. METHODS: We retrospectively analyz

Predictors of osteoporosis self-efficacy among young and middle-aged female nurses based on self-efficacy theory and the health belief model: evidence from a tertiary hospital in Eastern China.

BACKGROUND: Young and middle-aged female nurses face an elevated risk of osteoporosis due to occupational demands and progressive physiological bone loss. However, most existing studies focus on postmenopausal women, and the status of objective and self-perceived osteoporosis risk, knowledge, self-efficacy, and its influencing factors among young and middle-aged female nurses remains unclear. METHOD: A cross-sectional design was used. From August to September 2025, 380female nurses at the First Affiliated Hospital of Ningbo University, a 4,000-bed tertiary referral centre, were invited to par

Denosumab-efficacy, safety, persistence and sequential strategies-a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Denosumab (DMAB), a monoclonal antibody targeting receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-Β ligand (RANKL), is an effective antiresorptive therapy for osteoporosis that increases bone mineral density (BMD) and reduces the risk of vertebral and non-vertebral fractures. However, its effects are rapidly reversible, and treatment delays or discontinuation are associated with bone turnover overshoot, loss of BMD, and an increased risk of vertebral fractures. Despite generally high treatment persistence, DMAB is frequently discontinued, necessitating appropriate sequential therapy t

Severe fat embolism syndrome following minor trauma in a child with Duchenne muscular dystrophy: A case report.

Background Fat embolism syndrome (FES) is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication classically associated with long-bone fractures and orthopedic procedures. Patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) are at increased risk because of severe osteoporosis, chronic corticosteroid therapy, loss of ambulation, and fatty bone marrow replacement. However, FES remains underrecognized in this population, particularly when triggered by minor trauma without radiographic evidence of fracture. Case Presentation We report the case of a 12-year-old boy with DMD receiving long-term corticoste

Immunometabolic reprogramming in osteoporosis-osteoarthritis comorbidity: from inflammaging to osteochondral unit degeneration.

Osteoporosis (OP) and osteoarthritis (OA) are common and highly co-occurring degenerative bone diseases in the elderly population, and their comorbidity mechanisms cannot be fully explained by traditional factors such as mechanical load, changes in bone mass, or hormonal imbalance. OP is primarily characterized by systemic decrease in bone mass and reduced bone strength, while OA is mainly manifested by cartilage degeneration within specific joints, synovial inflammation, and abnormal subchondral bone remodeling. Although both are influenced by aging, inflammation, and metabolic abnormalities,

Modern pharmacological management of Osteoporosis: from monotherapy to sequential and combination approaches in postmenopausal women.

Osteoporosis is the most frequent systemic skeletal disorder characterized by an increased fracture risk and substantial global burden. While pharmacological therapies, including antiresorptive agents, anabolic agents, and dual-action agents, have demonstrated efficacy in reducing fracture risk and improving bone mineral density, long-term management remains challenging. Limitations, including treatment duration restrictions, safety concerns, rebound phenomena, and incomplete skeletal restoration, have shifted focus from prolonged monotherapy toward strategic therapeutic approaches integrating

A Safe Medial Column Screw Strategy for Transcondylar Humerus Fractures in the Elderly: CT-Based Analysis of Screw Diameter and Insertion Trajectory.

BACKGROUND: Double-plate fixation is widely used for transcondylar fractures of the distal humerus in elderly patients. Recently, fixation using a medial column screw (MCS) without a medial plate has been reported. However, anatomical data regarding optimal screw diameter and insertion trajectories are scarce. This study aimed to clarify the anatomical basis of MCS fixation using CT-based morphologic analysis. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed CT data from 92 humeri (51 male, 41 female) obtained between 2012 and 2023. A virtual cylinder was placed along the medial column, and the maximum d

Traditional Chinese medicine regulating Wnt/β-catenin and OPG/RANKL/RANK pathways in osteoporosis: a narrative review based on bone coupling and pathological subtype differences.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis (OP) is characterized by bone coupling imbalance-insufficient osteoblast-mediated formation and excessive osteoclast-mediated resorption. Among multiple signaling networks involved in bone remodeling, the canonical Wnt/beta-catenin pathway and the osteoprotegerin/receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB ligand/receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB axis, namely the OPG/RANKL/RANK axis, were selected because they represent two central and mutually interacting regulatory systems governing osteoblast differentiation and osteoclastogenesis. Traditional Chinese Medi

Sex- and age-specific patterns in bone, muscle, and fat across adulthood and their relation to osteosarcopenic adiposity phenotype: a cross-sectional study.

Evidence suggests that age-associated differences in body composition-bone/muscle/adipose tissue-are nonlinear, but their timing, sex-specific features, and relation to osteosarcopenic adiposity (OSA) phenotype remain poorly defined. OSA is characterized by the coexistence of osteopenia/osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and excess or redistributed adiposity. We examined sex- and age-specific patterns and inflection points for bone, muscle, fat, and intramuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) in cross-sectional data from 9717 Caucasian adults aged 20-90 years. Body composition was assessed using BIA-ACC, a non

Salvage of the Distal Radio-Ulnar Joint Following Failure of Fixation.

Distal radio-ulnar joint arthritis can result in significant impairment of upper limb function. This case report demonstrates a complex course of treatment in a patient with this pathology. Multiple procedures including fixation, matched ulnar resection, and ulnar excision with soft tissue stabilization failed. Ultimately, a Scheker prosthesis was able to achieve long-term functional recovery. This case highlights the challenges in managing distal ulna pathology, implant choices, and the impact of osteoporosis and smoking on bone quality and outcomes.

Smart Implant Coating with Pathological-Microenvironment-Driven Drug and Nanozyme Delivery for Osteoporotic Bone Healing.

Stimuli-responsive drug delivery from orthopedic implants holds particular promise for enhancing osseointegration in osteoporotic bone. However, challenges such as the lack of feedback-regulated functionality and microenvironmental modulation persist. Here, we developed an osteoporotic microenvironment-responsive implant coating that integrates feedback-regulated release of the anti-osteoporotic drug strontium ranelate (SR) with oxidative stress neutralization. A reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive and -regulating nanocoating was fabricated on SR-loaded titania nanotube arrays (TNTAs-SR)

Burosumab-responsive micro tumor-induced osteomalacia caused by a 6-mm phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor of the femoral head: a case report with review of literature on small (≤10 mm) FGF23-producing tumors.

A woman in her thirties presented with progressive bone pain, muscle weakness, recurrent stress fractures, and delayed fracture healing. Laboratory investigations demonstrated hypophosphatemia, renal phosphate wasting, elevated fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), and inappropriately low 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, leading to a diagnosis of FGF23-mediated tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) approximately one year after symptom onset. Bone scintigraphy demonstrated multiple fractures involving the ribs and pubic bones. [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ([18F]-F

Potential of ginger essential oil/carboxymethyl cellulose nanoemulsions prepared with ultrasound for preserving of fresh-cut carrot.

Fractures, mostly of the hip and pelvis, wrist, and sometimes of the vertebra, account for nearly half of emergency department treatments for elderly individuals seen because of a fall. Bone density measurements show that more than half of these patients have osteoporosis. The notion that it is too late to start treatment in a late stage of the disease forms a barrier to treatment. The aim of this article is to evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic options for osteoporosis in the elderly, with a view to reducing the incidence of fractures. Although most studies of fracture reduction with m

Type 2 Inflammatory Diseases: The Crossroads of Immunity and Metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Studies have revealed that macrophages play an important role in the development of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Activated macrophages can lead to a systemic inflammatory response, induce lipid peroxidation, impair membrane structure, result in injury to the liver and the other extrahepatic organs, and eventually result in multiple organ dysfunction syndrome by promoting excessive secretion of cytokines. Liver injury can further aggravate the systemic inflammatory response and increase mortality by affecting the metabolism of toxins and the release of excessive inflammatory med

Effects of Single-Bout Endurance Exercise Intensity on Peripheral Neurotrophic Factors in Patients With Ischemic Stroke During the Subacute Phase of Rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND Strong evidence suggests that a single session of aerobic exercise can alter serum neurotrophin concentrations and induce neural adaptations. This study aimed to analyze the effects of exercise intensity during a single exercise session on serum neurotrophin concentrations in patients after a first ischemic stroke. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty participants (mean age: 65.64±9.34 years) were randomly assigned to either the low-intensity continuous exercise group (n=15) or the moderate-intensity continuous exercise group (n=15). Serum neurotrophin concentrations were measured using an e

Comparing improvement ratings and minimal clinically important difference values between patients and physical therapists.

BACKGROUND: The minimal clinically important difference (MCID) is most commonly defined using patient-reported assessments of meaningful change. However, MCID values may also be derived from clinician judgments. Patient and physical therapist (PT) ratings of meaningful change may differ due to differences in clinical priorities and observational focus. It remains unclear whether MCID values defined by PTs align with those defined by patients themselves. METHODS: This study aim to determine the agreement in perceived improvement between patients and PTs and compare MCID values for the Simplifi
