"It's part of getting old": ageing perceptions and cultural beliefs underpin hip recovery and refracture prevention experiences: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hip fractures are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults, with significant consequences for recovery and refracture risk. While recovery experiences have been explored and interventions established, limited understanding exists of how individual, social and cultural factors influence engagement with recovery and secondary prevention in multicultural systems. We explored these factors among culturally diverse older adults and caregivers following low trauma hip fracture. METHODS: A qualitative study embedded within a prospective cohort at a metropoli

Rib quality assessment using quantitative ultrasound imaging of bone.

This feasibility study evaluated quantitative ultrasound imaging of bone (QUSIB) for non-ionizing assessment of rib quality in the context of breast cancer treatment. In silico, microcomputed tomography-based rib models simulated five-year of the effects of radiation and bisphosphonate therapy. Broadband ultrasound propagation (6-MHz center frequency, 128-element array) yielded backscatter and attenuation coefficients, which were related to structural and material parameters via univariate and partial least squares (PLS) regression analyses with 5-fold cross-validation. The strongest univariat

Multifunctional LepR⁺ skeletal stem/progenitor cells for bone and marrow homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Bone is a multifunctional organ that provides structural support and hosts the bone marrow, a key site for hematopoiesis and systemic homeostasis. These dual features have long attracted the attention of both bone biologists and hematologists. Each field has pursued the identification of stem-like cells responsible for hard tissue formation and the regulatory microenvironment/niche that supports hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which give rise to all blood cell lineages. Converging advances in bone and hematopoietic biology have led to the identification of skeletal stem/progenitor

Anoctamin 5 mutation leads to abnormal bone homeostasis of GDD by regulating AMPK-dependent glucose metabolism.

INTRODUCTION: Gnathodiaphyseal Dysplasia (GDD) characterized by enhanced bone mass and spontaneous fractures is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disease caused by Anoctamin 5 (ANO5) mutations. Deletion or mutation in ANO5 exhibited abnormal bone metabolism of GDD manifested by increased osteogenesis and reduced osteoclastogenesis. However, the mechanism is not fully understood. METHODS: Ano5Cys360Ty r knock-in mouse model was used. Mouse calvarial osteoblast (mCOB) and bone marrow macrophage (BMM) from homozygous knock-in (Ano5KI/KI) and wildtype mice were cultured in vitro. Compound C was s

Animal models for critical-sized long-bone defects and long-bone non-union: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Critical-sized long-bone defects and non-unions are among the most challenging complications in fracture care, as they lack the capacity for spontaneous healing and often lead to prolonged disability and repeated surgical intervention. Their complex aetiology involves mechanical, biological, and systemic factors that make consistent clinical management difficult. Preclinical animal models remain crucial for understanding the biological and mechanical factors underlying bone repair. This scoping review summaries existing animal models of long-bone defects and non-unions and identifi

Investigations of the Fracture Heterogeneity Effect on Imbibition Process during Water Flooding in Buried-Hill Oil Reservoirs, Liaodong Bay.

The Archean metamorphic buried-hill oil reservoirs are characterized by the development of natural fractures in different scales, which makes them an important type of reservoir in the Liaodong Bay, China. The heterogeneity of fractures between vertical members could lead to significant differences in multiphase flow. In this study, to investigate the different characteristics of the relative permeability and capillary pressure curves during imbibition, spontaneous imbibition experiments using three representative core plugs collected from the upper and lower members of semiweathered crust and

Metastatic renal cell carcinoma: risk of rapid progression to pathological fractures and factors influencing post-treatment survival - a Swedish Nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) represents about 2% of all cancers in Sweden. While RCC is known for its potential to metastasize to the skeleton, few studies have examined the risk factors for pathological fractures and their impact on survival. The Fuhrman grade and AJCC staging systems are commonly used to assess disease aggressiveness, but their relationship to fracture risk and post-fracture outcomes remains unclear. METHODS: This study cross-linked data from the Swedish Fracture Register (SFR) and the Swedish Renal Cancer Register (SNR) to identify RCC patients with pathological

Finite element analysis of femoral component positioning in medial UKA: A focus on varied bone quality.

BackgroundThe optimal positioning range for the femoral component in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) performed in osteoporotic bone remains undefined. Most existing biomechanical studies have been established using normal bone quality models, whereas limited evidence addresses abnormal bone conditions. Complications involving the operative-side compartment are closely associated with the high revision rates after UKA.MethodsCT and MRI scans of the right knee of a volunteer without pathological changes were used to construct a three-dimensional finite element model. A normal bone quali

The Interplay Between Bone Biology and Iron Metabolism: Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Implications.

The maintenance of bone homeostasis requires the coordinated activity of specialized cells (osteoblasts, osteoclasts and osteocytes), soluble factors and hormones with regulatory functions. Disruption of this tightly controlled balance contributes to several skeletal pathological conditions, among which osteoporosis is one of the most prevalent. Iron, an essential element for the basic cellular functions of both osteoblasts and osteoclasts, plays a pivotal role in preserving bone homeostasis and skeletal integrity. Both iron deficiency and iron overload impair bone remodeling through distinct

Bone marrow endosteum houses Hedgehog-susceptible Dlx5-expressing osteoblast precursor cells.

The bone marrow endosteum provides a robust source of bone-making osteoblasts by housing various types of osteoblast precursor cells, including endosteal stem cells expressing fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (Fgfr3) and their downstream progenitor cell populations. In fetal bone development, Dlx5 marks early perichondrial cells that populate the diaphyseal bone and marrow stroma in the postnatal stages. However, the location of Dlx5-expressing cells in the postnatal bone marrow and how they contribute to osteogenesis remain undefined. Here, we show that Dlx5+ cells are preferentially local

A rare case of lung hernia associated with rib fractures and tension pneumothorax post cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Rib fractures are the most common injury after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for non-traumatic cardiac arrest. Pneumothorax can evolve into tension pneumothorax with assisted ventilation leading to hypotension and cardiac arrest. Lung hernia post-CPR is rare but a potentially fatal complication. Here we describe a 67-year-old female who presented to the emergency department (ED) with acute infective asthma exacerbation. She received initial treatment of inhaled salbutamol and ipratropium bromide, oral prednisolone, supplemental oxygen, and intravenous ceftriaxone. Shortly after administr

Valve endothelial monolayer fissuring and interstitial matrix fracture triggers calcific lesion formation via GTPase signaling.

Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is a degenerative disease with wide prevalence in the aging population and a low survival rate after onset of symptoms, yet there are no effective pharmacological treatments. Many patients present to the clinic with symptoms at end-stages of CAVD, when the disease may be irreversible. The ability to identify and live-trace calcific lesion emergence in-vivo would allow for the identification of disease biomarkers and discovery of therapeutic targets at earlier, more treatable stages. In this work, we establish a new multimodal in-vitro CAVD platform consisti

Bilateral Amyloid Arthropathy of the Hip Joint Presented with Pathologic Fracture in a Hemodialysis Patient: A Case Report.

Pathological hip fractures are associated with substantial morbidity and functional decline. We report a rare case of localized dialysis-related amyloidosis involving both hip joints. A 48-year-old man undergoing long-term hemodialysis presented with atraumatic right hip pain. Radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a pathological subcapital fracture of the right femoral neck and extensive bilateral femoral neck osteolysis, with amyloid deposition showing low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. Given the severe bone erosion and im

Stand-Alone Sacroiliac-Joint Fusion as Novel Treatment Approach for Septic Arthritis of the Pubic Symphysis.

Management of septic arthritis of the pubic symphysis (SAS) presents with substantial clinical challenges. Firstly, the SAS is an extremely rare entity. Surgical resection of the symphysis plus targeted antibiotic therapy is a widely adopted treatment course. Some patients suffering from SAS develop posterior pelvic insufficiency fractures because of the weakened anterior pelvic ring or as a result of radiation therapy received during treatment for a malignant disease in the lesser pelvis. The literature demonstrates a lack of standardized strategies for restoring pelvic ring integrity based o

The association between glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and reported musculoskeletal adverse events: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a major risk factor for musculoskeletal disorders. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R)-based agonists facilitate weight loss and may influence musculoskeletal health. However, whether GLP-1R based agonists are associated with the musculoskeletal adverse events during the treatment remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between the use of GLP-1R agonists (GLP-1RA) and the spontaneous reports of musculoskeletal adverse events based on RCT safety data. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Cente

Long-Term Functional Outcomes and Survival Following Intramedullary Nailing of Pathological Diaphyseal Tibial Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Pathologic fractures of the tibia represent only 3% to 7% of all pathologic long bone fractures, with reported 12-month survival rates below 30%. Although intramedullary nailing (IMN) has become the preferred fixation strategy for pathologic fractures, data specific to tibial lesions remain limited, with existing studies including fewer than 10 patients and focusing primarily on survival or implant failure rather than functional outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 30 patients who underwent IMN for pathologic tibial fractures at two tertiary care academic medi

Mechanical traumatic injuries as a cause of death in free-ranging neotropical non-human primates living in anthropogenic matrices.

Traumatic injuries are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in free-ranging non-human primates (NHPs), often associated with anthropogenic pressures such as habitat loss, urbanization, and interactions with domestic animals. This study characterized some epidemiological, spatial, and pathological patterns of mechanical traumatic injuries in free-ranging non-human primates from anthropogenically altered areas of the Federal District. Of 696 necropsies performed, 215 cases (30.9%) involved mechanical trauma. Black-tufted marmosets (Callithrix penicillata) were the most affected species (90.2
