This prospective study was aimed at determining the risk factors for the development of fractures in perimenopausal women. The study group (n = 3068) was comprised of a stratified population sample of women aged between 47 and 56 years. During the follow-up period of 3.6 years, 257 (8.4%) of the women sustained a total of 295 fractures. Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) bone measurement is a relatively new technique for the diagnosis of osteoporosis which is cheaper and easier to use than the more established method of bone densitometry (measurement of bone mineral density, BMD) by x-ray absorptiometry. Metacarpal morphometry represents a potentially cheap and widely available non-invasive assessment of skeletal status. In two cross-sectional studies, we compared the performance characteristics of a semiautomated technique (the Teijin Bonalyzer) with an in-house manual measurement, and with measures of skeletal strength at other sites. The origin and natural course of solitary bone cysts (SBC) still remain controversial. Knowledge of the process of cyst formation and enlargement would be helpful for investigating its pathogenesis. Only two papers have described a radiodense nidus of the diaphysis as a precursor. Their cases were unique in that the initial lesions were in the diaphysis and that the cysts did not abut onto the epiphyseal line. This study reports a case in a patient with a tiny erosive lesion in the endosteal surface of the humeral metaphysis, which developed expansively into a typical large cyst over 6 years.

Localized disruption of bone architecture leads to an increased risk of pathological fractures in patients with Paget's disease, but the impact of the disease on overall fracture risk is unknown. In this retrospective study 50 humeral fractures (36 acute, 6 pathological fractures and 8 non-unions) were treated by retrograde locked bundled Marchetti nailing. No intraoperative complications occurred. Postoperative complications included 7 non-unions (4/36 acute fractures and 3/8 delayed union), and 2 intraarticular penetrations of the secondary nails. However, at the subsequent removal of the implant 5 supracondylar fractures occurred.

The incidence, distribution, time of appearance, and radiologic findings of bone metastases from soft tissue sarcomas, exclusive of lymphomas, were evaluated in 320 patients with soft tissue sarcomas.
