Endoscopic Marsupialization of Frontal Sinus Cholesterol Granuloma via a Draf IIb Approach: A Case Report.

Frontal sinus cholesterol granuloma (CG) is a rare, non-neoplastic inflammatory lesion that has traditionally been managed by open surgical approaches. A 48-year-old man presented with a one-year history of localized swelling of the left forehead. Computed tomography demonstrated two expansile lesions in the left frontal sinus. The larger lateral lesion was surrounded by diffusely thinned bone, with focal defects in the anterior frontal sinus wall and orbital roof. It protruded through these defects into the orbit and displaced the orbital contents inferiorly. Magnetic resonance imaging showed

Extradural Dermoid Cyst of the Cerebellar Convexity in an Elderly Patient: A Rare Case.

Dermoid cysts (DCs) are rare tumours originating from ectodermal and mesodermal tissues. They usually occur in the midline, especially in the posterior fossa. In this study, we describe an interesting case of a 73-year-old patient who presented with mild headaches, an imbalanced gait, and a slow, progressive hearing loss in the left ear. A brain CT scan showed a hypodense left cerebellar convexity extra-axial mass, containing some calcifications and causing bone erosion. On MRI, this tumour had a low T1 signal, a heterogeneous T2 signal, and a heterogeneous signal on diffusion-weighted images,

Preoperative knee cartilage degeneration in the patellofemoral joint results in worse clinical outcome scores 2 years after inverted V-shaped high tibial osteotomy.

PURPOSE: To determine whether preoperative whole-organ knee magnetic resonance imaging findings are associated with 2-year patient-reported outcomes after inverted V-shaped high tibial osteotomy (iV-HTO). The hypothesis of this study was that preoperative tibiofemoral cartilage wear or meniscal lesion predicts worse outcomes 2 years after iV-HTO, while patellofemoral joint degeneration does not have a significant impact. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of iV-HTO cases (2015-2022) with preoperative magnetic resonance imaging and 2-year follow-up data. Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonan

Imaging of primary vertebral tumors and tumor-like lesions in skeletally immature patients: a pictorial review.

Primary vertebral tumors and tumor-like lesions in skeletally immature patients are uncommon yet clinically consequential causes of pain, deformity, and neurological compromise. Compared with adults, pediatric lesions arise in a spine with open physes, evolving marrow composition, and substantial remodeling capacity-features that shape tumor biology and imaging appearance. This pictorial review summarizes malignant tumors, benign tumors, and tumor-like lesions of the pediatric spine, adopting a modality-first, compartment-aware approach. Useful highlights include vertebra plana in Langerhans c

Cytological Findings and Diagnostic Pitfalls of a Rare Tumor Arising From a Rare Site: "The Story of Chondromyxoid Fibroma of Great Toe".

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare, benign cartilaginous tumor composed of myxoid and fibrous components, accounting for approximately 1% of all bone tumors. It typically arises in the metaphysis of long bones, with epiphyseal involvement of the short tubular bones of the hand and foot being uncommon. We report the case of a 14-year-old girl who presented with pain and a gradually progressive swelling of the left great toe, occurring after a fracture sustained 2.5 years earlier. Radiological findings were suggestive of an aneurysmal bone cyst or giant cell tumor. Fine-needle aspiration cyto

Mandibular Chondrosarcoma Mimicking an Odontogenic Infection: A Case Report.

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor exhibiting cartilaginous differentiation. It is a relatively common primary malignant bone tumor, but its occurrence in the jaws is rare, particularly in the mandible. The clinical presentation may be nonspecific and may mimic odontogenic or inflammatory conditions, potentially resulting in delayed diagnosis. We report the case of a 37-year-old woman with mandibular chondrosarcoma initially presenting with persistent pain in the region of the right mandibular first molar. The lesion was initially managed as a dental condition, and endodontic trea

Acute Enlargement of a Frontal Calvarial Lesion in Polyostotic Fibrous Dysplasia Associated with McCune-Albright Syndrome: A Case Report.

Background McCune-Albright syndrome is a rare mosaic disorder caused by postzygotic activating mutations in GNAS , classically presenting with fibrous dysplasia (FD), hyperpigmented macules, and endocrinopathies. Craniofacial FD is common and typically follows a benign course. However, acute symptomatic changes with aggressive imaging features may mimic malignant transformation or secondary lesions such as aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs), creating significant diagnostic uncertainty. Case Description We report a 20-year-old woman with known MAS and polyostotic FD who presented with a 4-week histor

Malignant Proliferating Trichilemmal Tumor of the Scalp Treated With Excision and Adjuvant Radiotherapy.

Proliferating trichilemmal cysts are common benign lesions, but their malignant counterpart, malignant proliferating trichilemmal tumor (MPTT), is an extremely rare adnexal malignancy that predominantly arises on the scalp. Due to clinical and histological overlap, it is frequently misdiagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma. We report the case of a 70-year-old woman who presented with a progressively enlarging, painless, and bleeding midline scalp mass evolving over one year. A craniofacial CT scan (SOMATOM, Siemens Healthineers, Erlangen, Germany) revealed a well-defined, heterogeneous soft-tiss

Simple Bone Cyst: A Report of a Rare Case.

A simple bone cyst is an uncommon non-neoplastic intraosseous pseudocyst in the human jawbone. Because it lacks an epithelial lining, we refer to such a cyst as a pseudocyst. For simple bone cysts, several other names exist, such as traumatic bone cyst, solitary bone cyst, progressive bone cavity, hemorrhagic bone cyst, unicameral bone cyst, and extravasation cyst. Usually, routine radiographic examinations discover these cysts, which otherwise are asymptomatic. Unicameral bone cysts tend to gradually increase in size and enlarge along the long axis of the mandibular alveolar bone, causing no

Florid Cemento-Osseous Dysplasia and Simple Bone Cyst Association: Co-Occurrence or Evolution of the Disease? Two Case Reports and Literature Review.

OBJECTIVES: Cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) is the most common benign fibro-osseous lesion of the jaws, typically asymptomatic and identified through characteristic radiographic features. However, its rare association with simple bone cysts (SBCs) can significantly alter its presentation, mimicking more aggressive jaw lesions. This study aims to report additional cases of COD-associated SBCs and to review the literature to evaluate whether such lesions may represent a specific manifestation of the COD spectrum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two cases of florid COD with atypical radiolucencies were d

Clinicopathological Spectrum and Management of Aneurysmal Bone Cysts in Atypical Anatomical Location: A Comprehensive Review of Demographics, Presentation, Diagnosis, and Treatment Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign but locally aggressive osteolytic lesions characterized by blood-filled cystic spaces separated by fibrous septa containing osteoclast-like giant cells and reactive bone. Although commonly affecting the metaphysis of long bones in children and adolescents, ABCs may occur in atypical anatomical locations, creating diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The aim of this study was to review the demographic characteristics, clinical presentation, radiological and histopathological features, diagnostic challenges, and current management strategie

Diagnostic Utility of USP6 RNA Chromogenic In Situ Hybridization in the Differential Diagnosis of Nodular Fasciitis and Aneurysmal Bone Cyst.

Recurrent USP6 gene rearrangements underlie a subset of mesenchymal neoplasms, including nodular fasciitis and aneurysmal bone cyst. These rearrangements place USP6 under the regulatory control of another gene's constitutively active promoter, resulting in USP6 overexpression. Recently, it has been demonstrated in a limited number of cases that detection of USP6 overexpression by RNA chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH) can serve as a surrogate marker for USP6-rearranged tumors. To further assess the diagnostic utility of USP6 RNA CISH, we evaluated its application in 1210 bone and soft ti

Bleeding Control in Zygomatic Aneurysmal Bone Cysts: Intraoperative Ligation as an Alternative to Preoperative Embolization.

OBJECTIVES: Zygomatic aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare lesions that may lead to significant intraoperative bleeding. Although preoperative selective arterial embolization (SAE) is often recommended for hemorrhage control, it may not always be feasible. This report explores intraoperative external carotid artery (ECA) ligation as a potential alternative. METHODS: A 30-year-old female with a 4×3×3 cm hypervascular ABC of the zygomatic arch underwent surgical excision under general anesthesia. Intraoperative proximal ECA ligation was performed to control bleeding. A review of the literature

Clinical characteristics, anatomical distribution, and diagnostic patterns of simple bone cysts in Japan: an analysis of the Japanese Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor registry.

BACKGROUND: Simple bone cysts are benign cystic bone lesions that occur predominantly in children and adolescents, although they might occur in all ages. Previous studies have described clinical features and treatment options; however, large-scale epidemiological data from Japan are limited. We aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, anatomical distribution, diagnostic patterns, and initial treatment tendencies of simple bone cysts in Japan using data from the Japanese Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor (BSTT) registry and a nationwide institutional survey. METHODS: We performed a retrospe

Pediatric and Adult Sinonasal Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumors: CDKN2A Copy Number Alterations and Their Association with Recurrence.

PURPOSE: Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) are exceptionally rare neoplasms that secrete fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), leading to tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO). Owing to their nonspecific clinical manifestations and deceptively bland morphology, diagnosis is frequently delayed unless there is a high index of clinical suspicion or recognition of characteristic histopathological features. While PMTs predominantly arise in the appendicular skeleton, involvement of the sinonasal tract is uncommon, and pediatric sinonasal PMTs have not been reported previously. Although most PMTs fol

Rod-Suspended "Hammock" Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene Reconstruction for Posterolateral Chest Wall Defects After Multilevel En Bloc Spondylectomy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Multilevel en bloc spondylectomy (MES) for thoracic spinal tumors occasionally requires combined resection of ribs and parietal pleura, resulting in a large posterolateral chest wall defect adjacent to posterior instrumentation and a vertebral body cage. If unreconstructed, lung may herniate through the defect, and intrathoracic contents may migrate toward implants and neural elements. Our objective was to describe a simple, reproducible rod-suspended "hammock" reconstruction using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) for extensive posterolateral chest wall defec

Assessment of medical and dental students' knowledge, attitudes and practices related to fluoride exposure: a cross-sectional study from Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Fluoride is protective against dental caries, but chronic overexposure causes dental and skeletal fluorosis and has been associated with neurological, endocrine, and renal effects. Jordan has endemic fluorosis, with dental fluorosis affecting 40%-70% of residents in several regions, yet no study has examined whether its future clinicians are prepared to recognize and manage fluoride toxicity. We assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of medical and dental students regarding fluoride exposure. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 583 medical and dental students w

Subperiosteal lesions: a radiologic spectrum of pathologies and diagnostic considerations.

Subperiosteal lesions encompass traumatic, infectious, benign neoplastic, and malignant processes arising between the periosteum and the underlying cortex. Because the periosteum is more loosely adherent in children and young adults, several entities are encountered more often in paediatric populations. Accurate diagnosis requires integration of imaging characteristics such as lesion location, composition and cortical response, and relevant clinical context. This imaging-focused review discusses subperiosteal haematoma, abscess, ganglion, osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, l
