Assessment of medical and dental students' knowledge, attitudes and practices related to fluoride exposure: a cross-sectional study from Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Fluoride is protective against dental caries, but chronic overexposure causes dental and skeletal fluorosis and has been associated with neurological, endocrine, and renal effects. Jordan has endemic fluorosis, with dental fluorosis affecting 40%-70% of residents in several regions, yet no study has examined whether its future clinicians are prepared to recognize and manage fluoride toxicity. We assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of medical and dental students regarding fluoride exposure. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 583 medical and dental students w

Removal of fluoride from groundwater using a zeolite A supported magnetite biochar composite.

Prolonged consumption of excess fluoride concentration (> 1.5 mg/L) from groundwater notably poses serious health effects, including dental and skeletal fluorosis in the Rift Valley area of Ethiopia. In this study, a zeolite A supported magnetite biochar composite (Z-A/M-BC) was synthesized through a pyrolysis method for the removal of fluoride from groundwater. The as-synthesized adsorbent was characterized using FT-IR, PXRD, SEM-EDX, PZC, and BET analysis to identify the functional group, phase structure, surface morphology, elemental composition, surface charge distribution, and surface are

Pentose phosphate pathway regulates oxidative damage and apoptosis of chondrocytes induced by fluoride.

Fluorosis is a systemic disorder with primary manifestations including skeletal and dental fluorosis, where skeletal fluorosis is associated with cartilage lesions. This study investigated the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) regulated chondrocyte apoptosis and oxidative damage induced by fluoride. Bioinformatics analysis of Gene Expression Omnibus dataset (GSE70719) showed that PPP was significantly enriched in fluorine-induced osteocytes damage. We confirmed that sodium fluoride (NaF) inhibited the PPP of chondrocytes, decreased the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) and glut

Assessment of hydrochemistry, fluoride distribution, and non-carcinogenic health risks in groundwater of the Manyara region, Tanzania.

Fluoride (F-) contamination in groundwater is a major global public health concern. Prolonged intake of F⁻ above 1.5 mg/L and 10 mg/L may lead to skeletal fluorosis and crippling fluorosis, respectively. The Manyara region, located within Tanzania's fluoride belt in the Eastern African Rift Valley, is one of the areas most affected by elevated F- levels in groundwater. The extent of F⁻ pollution and associated health risks in this region remains poorly documented. This study assessed the hydrochemistry, spatial distribution of F-, non-carcinogenic health risks, and the suitability of groundwat

Fluoride contamination and water quality fluctuations in Mianwali District Pakistan and its implications for human health and sustainable agriculture.

This study offers a thorough evaluation of groundwater quality in the Mianwali region of Pakistan. A total 510 groundwater samples were collected from 176 government water supply facilities spread over three tehsils of the district. After that, the samples were examined for several Physio-chemical, and microbiological characteristics. The WHO standard level was surpassed by 35% of the samples collected for concentration of fluoride. According to the Fluoride Pollution Index (FPI) data, 68% of samples were classified as having moderate contamination, indicating a moderate presence of fluoride,

Predicting skeletal fluorosis severity using machine learning across diverse fluoride-exposed populations in China.

Skeletal fluorosis (SF) is a chronic metabolic bone disease resulting from long-term excessive fluoride exposure, affecting millions worldwide. Conventional diagnosis relies on radiographic evidence, which often detects the disease only at advanced stages, limiting opportunities for early intervention and prevention. A predictive model was developed to assess the severity of SF using comprehensive predictors, including demographic, environmental, and biomonitoring data, from 1,309 individuals across three major fluoride-endemic regions in China, representing coal-burning, drinking-water, and b

Knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and consequences of geogenic fluoride exposure on oral and dental health in Nakuru, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Although efforts to improve household water security have significantly advanced progress toward Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, environmental hazards, such as geogenic fluoride contamination, continue to threaten the lives of billions of people who rely on unimproved water sources. While awareness of the harmful effects of high fluoride levels in drinking water exists, research on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to fluoride and fluorosis remains limited, particularly among households in areas with naturally elevated fluoride levels. METHODS: We therefore examine

Radiographic sclerosis with intraoperative fragile bone in skeletal fluorosis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Skeletal fluorosis is a rare toxic osteopathy characterized by massive bone fluoride fixation. The disease is an endemic problem in some parts of the world and is the result of the prolonged ingestion or inhalation of large amounts of fluoride. The radiographic presentation is mainly characterized by bone changes, with osteocondensation and ossification of many ligaments and interosseous membranes. DIAGNOSES: A 59-year-old woman with skeletal fluorosis underwent staged bilateral total knee arthroplasty. Preoperative radiographs showed increased bone density, thickened and fused

Exploring the therapeutic synergy of drug-lifestyle interventions in fluorosis: a randomized trial on cardiovascular metabolic outcomes from the China fluorosis cohort (CFC).

INTRODUCTION: Skeletal fluorosis patients face a markedly elevated risk of cardiovascular metabolic abnormalities, including endothelial dysfunction, excessive oxidative stress, and impaired calcium-phosphate metabolism. Current clinical interventions for this condition are limited to symptomatic analgesia and conventional anti-osteoporotic treatments, and lack targeted therapeutic strategies for the "kidney deficiency and blood stasis" pathogenesis of skeletal fluorosis that can synergistically protect both the skeletal and cardiovascular systems. METHODS: This multicenter randomized control

Disruption of the core intestinal microbiota contributes to fluoride-induced neurotoxicity in the host organisms.

Fluoride is a potential environmental toxic substance associated with dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, and neurotoxic effects. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood, especially concerning the potential role of fluoride-induced intestinal microbiota dysbiosis in modulating the nervous system via the gut-neuraxis. In this study, an interspecies insect model of fluoride-induced neuronal damage was established to investigate the underlying mechanisms. The results showed markedly elevated malondialdehyde levels, along with reduced glutathione content and decreased catalas

Chronic fluoride exposure induces tissue damage, oxidative stress, and immune dysfunction in juvenile crucian carp (Carassius auratus).

Fluoride pollution in aquatic ecosystems poses substantial risks to aquatic organisms. However, most previous studies have focused on acute toxicity and skeletal fluorosis, whereas the chronic toxic effects of fluoride on non-skeletal tissues in fish remain poorly understood. In particular, the mechanisms underlying fluoride-induced toxicity, especially those associated with immune dysfunction and intestinal microbiota disruption, have yet to be fully elucidated. In the present study, juvenile crucian carp (Carassius auratus) were used as an experimental model to investigate the chronic toxic

Nanoconfinement-enhanced cerium@carbon nanotubes composites for adsorption of fluoride.

The selective removal of fluoride (F-) from water is of great necessity because excessive F- in water can cause symptoms such as skeletal fluorosis and nerve damage, which poses a serious threat to human health. Cerium hydroxide (Ce(OH)3) nanoadsorbents offer a promising strategy for F- removal, which have limits such as aging-induced phase transition, easy deactivation, and aggregation. This study reports a cerium-loaded carbon nanotube (CNTs) composite (Ce@C10/80/150) to overcome the intrinsic defects and enhance the selective adsorption capacity for F- removal from water. Ce@C10/80/150 was

Global groundwater contamination by geogenic fluoride.

Fluoride (F¯) is a global geogenic contaminant in groundwater, occurring at elevated concentrations across almost every continent. While optimal fluoride intake benefits dental health, levels exceeding the WHO safe limit (1.5 mg L-1) can cause dental fluorosis and even severe skeletal fluorosis, with drinking water being the primary exposure pathway. Understanding the global occurrence and geochemistry of fluoride in groundwater is essential for minimizing associated health risks. Therefore, this study reviews the incidence, distribution, mobilization mechanisms of fluoride in groundwater, and

Differential miRNA profiles in fluoride-exposed rBMSCs-EVs and the influence of miR-320-3p transfer on osteogenic differentiation.

Long-term excessive fluoride ingestion may lead to skeletal fluorosis, a disease characterized by unclear pathogenesis and lack of effective cure. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (BMSCs-EVs) exert a crucial regulatory effect on bone remodeling and have broad clinical application prospects. Whether BMSCs-EVs can participate in the occurrence and development of skeletal fluorosis by transferring miRNAs is a scientific question worth exploring. In this study, miRNA sequencing was used to screen for differentially expressed miRNAs in fluoride-exposed rBMSCs-EVs (F-
