In several parts of the world, high fluoride concentrations in groundwater have been reported.Fluoride concentrations above the World Health Organization's (WHO) threshold level of 1.5 mg/L in drinkable water pose a health concern for communities and the environment. The distribution of fluoride is mainly related to the geological environment: rocks that contain fluorine, for example basalt, shale, and granite, release their respective minerals containing fluoride to the groundwater by dissolution. Excessive fluoride intake leads to dental and skeletal fluorosis, fragile bones, cancer, inferti

Disease associated with Cladophialophora bantiana infection is uncommon but can be characterised by severe and life-threatening CNS involvement. Diagnosis is challenging due to both the infection's rarity and non-specific clinical presentation, which can mimic malignancy and infection caused by more common organisms. Transmission can occur via inhalation or inoculation through compromised skin, followed by haematogenous dissemination to the brain and other organs. We report a case of a 42-year-old renal transplant recipient with no travel history presenting with neurological symptoms and skin

Fluorosis, a debilitating disease, causes dental mottling and bone deformities among other adverse health effects. The current epidemiological study focused on the prevalence and risk factors of fluorosis in the fluoride endemic village, Dongargaon, Maharashtra, India. The clinical diagnosis of subjects showed 96.49% prevalence of dental fluorosis, and 63.16% prevalence of skeletal fluorosis. Duration of exposure, age of subjects and physiological symptoms like chronic joint pain were found to be significantly correlated with skeletal fluorosis (p < 0.05). Fluoride in drinking water showed sea

In rural areas with high fluoride concentrations in groundwater, affordable and effective de-fluoridation technologies can significantly reduce the likelihood of being affected by fluorosis-related illnesses, such as skeletal fluorosis. This is particularly significant in areas where groundwater is the primary or sole drinking water source, such as the Rift Valley of Tanzania. Despite the availability of technologies, people's use of de-fluoridation devices still needs to be improved. This study investigates the potential impact of fear appeals on promoting protective behaviors and willingness

Fluoride contamination of groundwater is a severe public health problem in Africa due to natural factors that include geological weathering of fluoride-bearing minerals and climatic conditions characterized by high evaporation rates that highly elevate fluoride levels. Anthropogenic activities further aggravate the problem and have affected millions of people in countries such as; South Africa, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritania, Botswana, and Egypt. High fluoride levels of up to 10 mg/L have been encountered in parts of the East African Rift Valley, above the WHO's recommen

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva and progressive osseous heteroplasia are genetic forms of heterotopic ossification (HO). Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is caused by ACVR1 gene mutations, while progressive osseous heteroplasia is caused by GNAS gene mutations. Nongenetic HO typically occurs after trauma or surgery, with an occurrence rate of 20-60%. It can also be observed in conditions such as diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, spinal ligament ossification, ankylosing spondylitis, and skeletal fluorosis. The exact cause of nongenetic HO is not entirely clear. More than 100

This paper evaluated fluoride (F-) pollution in drinking groundwater sources, which causes severe fluorosis and other human health concerns in Swabi, Pakistan. We determined F- concentration, prevalence, enrichment, distribution, and health hazards from water ingestion in Swabi, Pakistan. Therefore, 126 groundwater and 18 surface water samples were collected to analyze F- and other geochemical tracers to understand groundwater enrichment and F- mobilization in aquatic systems. The range and mean values of F- in groundwater were 0.02 to 14.2 and 4.0 mg/L, and those in surface water were 1.12-0.

Excessive fluoride intake can lead to skeletal fluorosis. Nutritional differences in the same fluoride-exposed environment result in osteosclerosis, osteoporosis, and osteomalacia. DNA methylation has been found to be involved in skeletal fluorosis and is influenced by environment and nutrition. In a previous study, we screened eight genes with differential methylation associated with various phenotypes of skeletal fluorosis. By combining gene functions, Mill1 gene was selected for subsequent experiments. First, we found that the Mill1 gene was hypomethylated and upregulated in osteosclerosis

Groundwater contamination with fluoride is a considerable public health concern that affects millions of people worldwide. The rapid growth of urbanization has led to increase in groundwater contamination. The health risk assessment focuses on both acute and chronic health consequences as it investigates the extent and effects of fluoride exposure through contaminated groundwater. Fluoride exposure, especially in endemic locations, has serious health consequences, including dental and skeletal fluorosis. An accurate assessment of these hazards is essential for public health planning and mitiga

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2024eng
PURPOSE: Skeletal fluorosis (SF) results from chronic exposure to fluoride (F-) causing excessive aberrantly mineralized brittle bone tissue, fractures, and exostoses. There is no established treatment other than avoiding the source of F-. Still, excess F- can persist in bone for decades after exposure ceases.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old woman presented with multiple, recurrent, low AQ2 trauma fractures yet high radiologic bone mineral density. Serum F- was elevated, and osteomalacia was documented by non-decalcified transiliac biopsy. She reported intermittently "huffing" a keyboard cle

A 30-yr-old man developed right lower leg pain and a palpable solid mass. Radiographic imaging revealed a periosteal reaction with an exostotic mass arising from the right distal fibula. Generalized skeletal osteosclerosis with periosteal reaction was discovered on a radiographic skeletal survey. A biopsy of the right fibular mass revealed reactive woven bone. The patient was referred to a metabolic bone disease clinic, where laboratory values were consistent with secondary hyperparathyroidism and increased bone turnover. A DXA bone density scan revealed high bone density, with an L1-4 spine Z

Exposure to excess fluoride is a controversial public health concern as it can cause dental/skeletal fluorosis as well as renal toxicity. The study intended to evaluate the synergistic interaction of clay intercalation and thermochemical modification on corncob biochar to remove fluoride from aqueous solutions. Layered double hydroxide was assorted with thermally activated (torrefaction and pyrolysis) corncob biochar at 1:1 (w/w) ratio to obtain composites called LDH-CCBC250 and LDH-CCBC500. Physicochemically characterized adsorbents were assessed against the pH (3-9), reaction time (up to 12

Skeletal fluorosis likely alters bone structural properties on the cortical and cancellous tissue levels in view that fluorine ion replaces bone mineral composition. Our previous study showed high bone turnover occurred in cortical bone of skeletal fluorosis. Therefore, this study further analyzed the microstructure of cancellous bone in fluorosis rats. Rats were randomly assigned into three groups: the control, low-dose fluoride group (10 mgF-/kg·day), and high-dose fluoride group (20 mgF-/kg·day). Rats were orally administered with fluoride for 1, 2, and 3 months of periods. The trabecular b
