BACKGROUND: Solitary bone cysts (SBC) are uncommon non-neoplastic bone lesions, which present mainly in the mandible. Their aetiology is still obscure, but it has been suggested that they may be a result of trauma in the region. Due to their asymptomatic nature, SBCs are revealed mainly accidentally during routine radiographic examination. Sometimes, patients complain of pain or delayed eruption of teeth. Treatment is recommended because, otherwise, the cyst may become symptomatic or cause a pathologic mandibular fracture.
CASE REPORT: A 7-year-old Caucasian boy presented with delayed eruptio

Solitary bone cysts are benign osteolytic lesions rarely involving the mandibular condyle. They are considered pseudocysts due to the absence of epithelium and their pathogenesis is unknown. These lesions are also known with a variety of synonyms, such as traumatic bone cysts, simple bone cysts, haemorrhagic bone cysts and unicameral cysts. The authors report a case of a solitary cyst of the condylar head treated by enucleation and curettage via an intraoral endoscopic-assisted surgical approach, which avoids the risk of facial nerve injury, reduces the patient's hospitalization and speeds up

The treatment of solitary bone cysts remains controversial. The high recurrence rate after operative treatment calls for the search of new effective treatment methods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of treatment of solitary bone cysts with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and allogenic bone grafts. The study group consisted of 9 patients (4 males and 5 females) with the diagnosis of solitary bone cyst. Their mean age was 12 years and 2 months (range: 6 to 17 years). All patients were symptomatic in routine daily activities. There was a coexisting fracture within the cyst wall in

BACKGROUND: Solitary bone cysts are benign, fluid-filled, expansive lesions in children. The success rate of bone consolidation in the case of a solitary bone cyst is unpredictable following steroid injection.
METHODS: Among 24 patients with a solitary bone cyst, 11 (femur 8; pelvic bone 3) underwent curettage plus bone grafting for stabilization. The remaining 13 patients--8 long bones (humerus 6; femur 2) and 5 non-long bones (calcaneus 5)--underwent curettage plus steroid injections.
RESULTS: Among the 11 patients, 2 treated by curettage plus bone grafting suffered recurrence and needed a

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Rarely sarcomas develop in previous benign lesions, after a long term disease free interval. We report the experience on these rare cases observed at a single Institution.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 12 cases curetted and grafted, without radiotherapy developed sarcomas, between 1970 and 2005, 6.5-28 years from curettage (median 18, average 19). Age ranged from 13 to 55 years (median 30, average 32) at first diagnosis; tumors were located in the extremities (9 GCT, benign fibrous histiocytoma, ABC, and solitary bone cyst). Radiographic and clinic documentation, for the benign an

BACKGROUND: Solitary bone cyst is rarely situated in facial bones.
AIM: We discuss clinical view, results of radiological examinations and differential histopathological diagnostics of cases.
RESULTS: We present 3 cases of patients: 51 year old man with cyst in frontal sinus; 29 year old man and 46 year old woman--both with changes in bones of the orbit. In all the cases results of histopathological examinations were similar. Cystic-shape pieces of vascularizated connective tissue were observed. Multiple cracks filled with cholesterol, macrophages with hemosiderin and occasionally multinucle

INTRODUCTION: Solitary maxillary or mandibular bone cysts are rare benign lesions. They are usually localized in the mandible of young men. In some cases, a traumatic risk factor can be documented.
OBSERVATION: A young 13-year-old female patient consulted in the orthodontics unit. An orthopantomogram showed a large cystic lesion in the ramus and posterior part of the left mandible corpus. No reossification of the cavity was observed one year after curettage. A second curettage was performed combined with PRF filling. Six months later, the cavity was completely reossified.
DISCUSSION: Curetta

BACKGROUND: A randomized prospective trial of marrow-versus-steroids treatment of solitary bone cyst was ongoing. Protocol required contrast injection of the cyst. A subpopulation was noted to have large, rapid venous outflow of contrast material (omnipaque). Central embolization and resultant acute respiratory distress syndrome has been reported with bone marrow transplant. Particulate injection can result in bradycardia, low exhaled CO2, decreased SaO2 and voltage changes on electrocardiogram.
METHODS: Precordial Doppler can measure flow and turbulence centrally after a peripheral cyst inje

The solitary maxillomandibular bone cyst is a benign bone lesion with a nontumoral osteolysis and a progressive growth potential. It is considered as a pseudocyst because of the absence of epithelium and accounts for 1% of bone cysts. Most facial solitary bone cysts are observed in the mandible, especially in the corpus, and in young patients. Its etiopathogeny is unknown. The solitary bone cyst is asymptomatic. It is often discovered accidentally by radiolucent lacuna. Adjacent teeth vitality is preserved. The differential diagnosis is that of mandibular radiolucent lacuna etiologies. The dia

Ewing's sarcoma is a high-grade malignant primary bone tumour with aggressive clinico-radiologic features. Rarely, it exhibits a benign pattern, but presentation as a solitary bone cyst in a long bone is rather unusual. The purpose of this paper is to document such a cystic presentation with relatively benign clinico-radiologic course and to review the pertinent literature. A 27-year-old male presented with a pathologic fracture through a radiologically benign appearing solitary bone cyst in the distal tibial metaphysis. The fracture healed on conservative treatment, but the patient presented

UNLABELLED: Solitary bone cyst of the jaws is an uncommon lesion detected usually as an incidental finding on dental radiographic examination. Historically, this cyst has been known by several different names within the literature. It is usually asymptomatic but can present with buccal swelling, pain, paraesthesia and be associated with non-vital teeth. Radiographically, it has characteristic features that distinguish it from other lesions. The following is an overview of the literature, the experience of two centres over an eight-year period, and a discussion of the dental implications. Clini

Mirror-image solitary bone cysts (SBCs) of the humerus in a pair of mirror-image monozygotic twins are presented. One twin was right-handed and had SBC at the left humerus. The other twin was left-handed and had SBC at the right humerus. The directions of the whirl of hair on their heads were opposite with each other. These findings strongly suggest cytogenetic factors in the aetiology or pathogenesis of SBC.

Solitary bone cyst of the pelvis is a rare lesion. The diagnosis is relatively simple providing sufficient material is accumulated during biopsy or surgery. Calcifying forms often cause difficulties in terms of differential diagnosis. Radiographic imaging can be complex when examining large lesions of the pelvis. Biopsy is the method of choice for definitive diagnosis, which should be verified against material gathered surgically or during curettage. Bone tumors of the pelvis have to be considered in the differential diagnosis of the lesion. Large cystic lesions of the pelvis in particular are

Although the growth of the proximal epiphysis of the humerus is thought to contribute 80% of the total increase in humeral length, few articles have provided evidence for this. A 9-year-old boy with a pathological fracture at the humeral neck, owing to a solitary bone cyst, was treated by the decompression method using cannulated screws for 7.5 years. During this period, we measured the longitudinal humeral bone growth. The value obtained for the longitudinal growth contribution of the proximal humerus was 88% in this particular case.

Fifty-nine cases of lesions presenting in the patella were identified after review of the databases of four European bone tumour registries. Of the 59 cases, 46% were non neoplastic, 39% were benign and 15% were malignant. The commonest benign neoplasm was giant cell tumour (GCT) (11 cases). Younger patients were more likely to have a benign neoplasm. Lesions in patients less than 40 years of age included giant cell tumour, chondroblastoma, aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC), osteomyelitis, osteoid osteoma and solitary bone cyst. In patients older than 40 years, the following were common lesions: intr
