CASE: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are uncommon, benign, fluid-filled lesions, most often encountered in children and adolescents. We report a case of a 16-year-old boy with symptomatic spinal cord compression due to ABC located in the T1 and T2 vertebrae. He was treated by selective arterial embolization (SAE).
CONCLUSION: Our report demonstrates that it is possible to achieve successful spinal cord decompression solely through SAE, offering a less invasive approach without the need for surgery. The use of SAE in this specific group of patients (symptomatic spinal cord compression without sp

OBJECTIVE: Total en bloc spondylectomy (TES) of spinal tumors results in a large vertebral defect. Despite reconstruction and fusion, there is the potential concern for long-term mechanical stability. This retrospective cohort study investigated the long-term outcome of TES and reconstruction.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients (mean age 40.0 ± 15.3 years) underwent TES for either primary spinal tumors or solitary metastasis and reconstruction with instrumented posterior spinal fusion and anterior fusion with titanium mesh cages at the authors' institution from November 2001 to April 2022. BACKGROUND/AIM: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign osteolytic lesions associated with lameness and present therapeutic challenges due to their frequent recurrence following surgery. This case report describes the surgical management and long-term outcomes of recurrent femoral ABC in a dog treated with multiple adjuvant therapies, including bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2)-loaded alginate microbeads.
CASE REPORT: A 2-year-old neutered male Golden Retriever presented with right hindlimb lameness. Three months before, the dog underwent initial surgical curettage and bone grafting of a f

INTRODUCTION: The approach to the management of aneurysmal bone cysts has evolved over time, with the focus shifting from surgery to less invasive therapeutic modalities. Curettage with or without bone grafting was considered the procedure of choice until recently but is associated with high recurrence rates. The management of recurrent aneurysmal bone cysts is challenging, especially in the presence of pathologic fractures. Scant literature is available on total hip arthroplasty for aneurysmal bone cysts of the proximal femur.
CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old man underwent extended curettage and b

PURPOSE: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are bone tumours characterised by blood-filled cystic lesions. Management strategies for ABCs vary widely and lack consensus. This study aims to evaluate outcomes in 258 patients and investigate the factors affecting the recurrence rates.
METHODS: This study is a single-centre retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with ABC between January 1990 and December 2020. Patients who were histologically diagnosed with ABC, had available pathology, radiology, and surgery records, and were followed up for at least 24 months were included. Secondary ABCs were

Lytic patellar lesions may occur in a variety of conditions, from commonly seen developmental, degenerative, traumatic, metabolic, infectious, iatrogenic to uncommon benign and malignant neoplasms. Patellar metastasis is rare. Due to the low incidence and the non-specific symptoms of metastatic anterior knee pain, delayed diagnosis is common and the prognosis is poor. It is worthwhile to remind clinicians and radiologists the possibility of patellar metastasis in patients with a history of previous malignancy presenting with an intractable anterior knee pain. We proposed the diagnosis and diff

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Denosumab has been considered effective for downstaging giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB), implying that it lowers the Campanacci grade rather than reducing tumor size. Preoperative tumor shrinkage holds therapeutic value by decreasing surgical complications. While previous studies have observed lesion shrinkage in some patients, no study has identified the types of patients likely to show treatment response. Thus, we sought to identify the clinical factors associated with post-denosumab GCTB size reduction.
METHODS: The data for 45 GCTB patients (29 females [64%], 16 mal

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Telangiectatic osteosarcoma (TOS) is a rare and aggressive subtype of osteosarcoma that is often misdiagnosed as more benign lesions, such as aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) or giant cell tumors (GCTs). The accurate differentiation between these conditions is crucial to ensure timely and appropriate treatment, as misdiagnosis can lead to delayed management and poor prognoses.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 12-year-old girl who initially presented with left hip and proximal thigh pain, with imaging studies suggesting an ABC. Following curettage and grafti

Primary chest wall tumors are rare, with rib involvement accounting for 5%-7% of primary bone tumors. Aneurysmal bone cysts typically present as a rapidly growing, destructive mass that may infiltrate surrounding tissues. We present the case of a 21-year-old female with chronic pain in the left hemithorax caused by an aneurysmal bone cyst originating from the seventh rib arch. A minimally invasive en bloc resection was successfully performed using a robotic platform. Robot-assisted surgery offers a promising therapeutic approach for patients with well-defined chest wall tumors, allowing for a

Pediatric bone lesions encompass a diverse spectrum of conditions, including benign neoplasms, cystic lesions, fibro-osseous lesions, and malignant tumors. This review highlights key diagnostic and management principles for commonly encountered non-sarcomatous lesions such as chondroblastoma, giant cell tumor, and aneurysmal bone cyst. Emphasis is placed on integrating clinical presentation, radiographic imaging, histopathological examination, and molecular diagnostics, such as H3.3 mutations and USP6 rearrangements, to refine differential diagnoses. A multidisciplinary approach is essential f

This case report discusses the management of a three-year-old male presenting with a pathological fracture of the distal femur due to an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC). Due to diagnostic uncertainty and limited resources, the treatment involved an en bloc resection followed by the Masquelet technique with a fibular and cancellous graft. While this approach successfully reconstructed the bone defect, the patient developed a progressive valgus deformity and limb length discrepancy, likely due to physeal damage from the resection rather than the reconstruction technique itself. This case highlights t

BACKGROUND: Lymphangiomas, predominantly observed in pediatric populations, can occasionally be acquired in adulthood. They are rare benign tumors mostly found in the head and neck region, with solitary cystic lymphangioma in bone being very rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report an uncommon case of a solitary cystic lymphangioma in the talus bone of a 19-year-old Chinese female presented with a history of enduring ankle swelling, rest pain, and frequent sprains. The patient's T2-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) revealed a cystic bone lesion with multiple internal fluid levels, which ini

Aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign hemorrhagic, cystic, locally aggressive lesion of the bone, affecting the pediatric and adolescent populations, and it has a female preponderance. It is the most common benign tumor of the fibula. Surgical intervention includes techniques such as en bloc resection and intralesional curettage. Some authors now prefer using less invasive options as the primary treatment. The purpose of this technical note is to describe the details of endoscopic curettage of aneurysmal bone cyst of the distal fibula.

This report identifies two cases of juvenile dogs with an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC). The first case describes an ABC in the left rostral mandible, and the second case describes an ABC in the right maxilla. ABCs are typically identified in juvenile or young animals and have been reported in a variety of species. An ABC results from the intraosseous expansion of soft or immature bone and is more appropriately identified as a pseudocyst due to the absence of an epithelial lining. An ABC is most likely believed to be caused by trauma, which contributes to the formation of an expansile, blood-fill

BACKGROUND: Sacropelvic fixation is used in the management of deformity, neoplasms, and fractures. S2-alar-iliac (S2AI) screws have evolved as a technique for sacropelvic fixation to address disadvantages associated with traditional iliac screws. In select patients, S2AI screw placement is not feasible due to patient anatomy, trauma, or osteolytic lesions.

BACKGROUND: Sclerotherapy with polidocanol is a minimally invasive treatment for smaller Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs), offering safety and lower recurrence rates compared to surgery. Treatment choice depends on ABC size and location, with denosumab and titanium elastic nails as alternatives. To our knowledge, there are no systematic reviews regarding sclerotherapy with polidocanol as a treatment for ABCs. We aim to elucidate the effects of polidocanol in patients with ABCs.
METHODS: This systematic review included studies involving patients with aneurysmal bone cyst treated with sclerotherapy

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are usually treated with curettage or various minimally invasive percutaneous procedures. Patient refractory to these treatments, as well as those with locally advanced or unresectable tumors, present a challenge for orthopedic surgeons and require new treatment approaches. Anti-resorptive drugs inhibit osteoclastic resorption and increase intralesional osteogenesis. Denosumab induces tumor ossification, but this effect may disappear after drug withdrawal due to limited impact on neoplastic cells. Bisphosphonates (BPs) may induce apoptosis of tumor cell

BACKGROUND: Ewing sarcoma (ES) is a rare malignant tumour primarily affecting adolescents, typically involving the axial and appendicular skeleton. Its occurrence in the hand is exceedingly rare, comprising less than 1 % of all cases. Early diagnosis is often challenging due to its nonspecific symptoms and similarities to other conditions. This case report highlights a rare presentation of Ewing sarcoma in the hand.
