Diagnostic Utility of USP6 RNA Chromogenic In Situ Hybridization in the Differential Diagnosis of Nodular Fasciitis and Aneurysmal Bone Cyst.

Recurrent USP6 gene rearrangements underlie a subset of mesenchymal neoplasms, including nodular fasciitis and aneurysmal bone cyst. These rearrangements place USP6 under the regulatory control of another gene's constitutively active promoter, resulting in USP6 overexpression. Recently, it has been demonstrated in a limited number of cases that detection of USP6 overexpression by RNA chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH) can serve as a surrogate marker for USP6-rearranged tumors. To further assess the diagnostic utility of USP6 RNA CISH, we evaluated its application in 1210 bone and soft ti

Clinical characteristics, anatomical distribution, and diagnostic patterns of simple bone cysts in Japan: an analysis of the Japanese Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor registry.

BACKGROUND: Simple bone cysts are benign cystic bone lesions that occur predominantly in children and adolescents, although they might occur in all ages. Previous studies have described clinical features and treatment options; however, large-scale epidemiological data from Japan are limited. We aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, anatomical distribution, diagnostic patterns, and initial treatment tendencies of simple bone cysts in Japan using data from the Japanese Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor (BSTT) registry and a nationwide institutional survey. METHODS: We performed a retrospe

Pediatric and Adult Sinonasal Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumors: CDKN2A Copy Number Alterations and Their Association with Recurrence.

PURPOSE: Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) are exceptionally rare neoplasms that secrete fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), leading to tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO). Owing to their nonspecific clinical manifestations and deceptively bland morphology, diagnosis is frequently delayed unless there is a high index of clinical suspicion or recognition of characteristic histopathological features. While PMTs predominantly arise in the appendicular skeleton, involvement of the sinonasal tract is uncommon, and pediatric sinonasal PMTs have not been reported previously. Although most PMTs fol

A case of glandular odontogenic cyst with diagnostic difficulty based on imaging findings.

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare odontogenic cyst characterized by distinctive epithelial features and is known for its potential for local aggressiveness and recurrence. Because its clinical presentation and imaging characteristics substantially overlap with those of other odontogenic cysts and tumors, establishing a preoperative diagnosis is often challenging, and a definitive diagnosis relies on histopathological evaluation. We report the case of a 46-year-old man in whom panoramic radiography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) failed to yield diagnost

The gut-liver axis in cirrhosis: bacterial translocation, immune dysregulation, and the impact of microbiota in diverse aetiologies.

This article describes an unusual clinical-radiographic presentation of a lateral periodontal cyst, as a differential diagnosis of a residual cyst, following the 'CARE guidelines for case reports'. The radiolucent lesion was identified on the imaging exam of a 53-year-old male patient. Based on radiographic findings and aspiration puncture, the probable diagnosis was a residual cyst; however, histological analysis revealed a thin, non-inflamed fibrous capsule covered by some epithelial layers in most of the lesion. The definitive diagnosis was a lateral periodontal cyst with unusual clinical a

An artificial intelligence-assisted automated quantitative evaluation system for condylar morphological changes of temporomandibular joint.

OBJECTIVES: To develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted system for the automated quantitative evaluation of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condylar morphological changes. METHODS: This study utilized 212 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of the TMJ from 114 patients, with radiologist-validated annotations. The proposed system comprised three modules: (1) an automated segmentation model based on the U-Net architecture, trained on 120 TMJs (60 normal and 60 osteoarthritis condyles) and tested on 32 TMJs (16 normal, 8 type I osteoarthritis condyles with surface erosion/destructio

Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of Talus: Case Report of a Rare Presentation.

INTRODUCTION: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are most commonly found in the metaphysis of long bones but are reported to have been found in other locations as well. While presentation of a swelling in a short bone is unlikely to be an ABC, the possibility should be kept in mind, especially with supporting radiological findings. CASE REPORT: In this case report, we present the case of a young female who presented to us with complaints of pain and swelling over the dorsal aspect of her right foot. Radiological investigations pointed toward a diagnosis of ABC of the talus bone, which was confirmed

Suspected unusual digital metastases of a primary renal cell carcinoma in a cat.

An 8-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was presented for exploration of a renal mass. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a thick, anechoic, and irregular band partially encapsulating the left kidney with a thick echoic capsule and numerous thick echoic striations. Cytologic examination revealed moderate serosanguineous and chronic inflammatory effusion without atypical cells or causative agents. Swelling around several digits of both forelimbs and a small eyelid nodule appeared several days later. Radiographs of both forelimbs revealed aggressive osteolytic lesions of the distal ph

Frequency and management of non-cardiac incidental findings on cardiac CT in patients with a suspected stroke.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac CT is increasingly used to screen for cardioembolism in stroke patients. We assessed the frequency and management of non-cardiac incidental findings on prospective ECG-gated cardiac CT in patients with a suspected stroke. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a post-hoc analysis of the Mind the Heart study, a prospective single-centre cohort study including consecutive adult patients with acute ischaemic stroke (AIS), transient ischaemic attack (TIA), or a stroke mimic who underwent cardiac CT as part of an acute stroke imaging protocol. Endpoints were pre-defined non-cardiac i

Injectable synthetic bone graft substitute (GeneX) in the surgical management of benign bone tumours: further experience from a tertiary musculoskeletal oncology centre.

BACKGROUND: Intralesional curettage of benign bone lesions often leaves contained voids requiring augmentation. GeneX (Biocomposites Ltd., Keele, UK) is an injectable synthetic bone graft substitute, comprised of beta-tricalcium phosphate and calcium sulfate, which may simplify postoperative surveillance due to its osteoconductivity and resorption. Evidence for GeneX use in this setting is limited and based mainly on small, heterogeneous series; we report further real-world experience from a tertiary musculoskeletal oncology centre. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 21 consecutive patient

Giant Cell Tumor of the Sacrum With Secondary Changes of an Aneurysmal Bone Cyst: A Case Report.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a typically benign but locally aggressive neoplasm that occurs between the ages of 20 and 40 years, and most commonly arises in the epiphysis of long bones, with sacral involvement being rare and diagnostically challenging due to its insidious onset and nonspecific symptoms. We report the case of a 21-year-old woman who presented with progressive low back pain radiating to both lower limbs, associated with perianal numbness and bilateral heel pain aggravated by physical activity. Imaging revealed a well-defined, expansile osteolytic lesion involving the S1-S2

Intraosseous epidermoid cyst in the digit of an atopic dog with chronic pododermatitis: case report.

Epidermoid cysts are non-neoplastic lesions characterized by a cavity lined by stratified squamous keratinized epithelium and filled with lamellar keratin. While dermal epidermoid cysts are commonly observed in dogs, the intraosseous form is rarely reported. These cysts must be differentiated from other digital lesions involving bone, particularly malignant tumors, as the latter often require more extensive surgical intervention for definitive management. This report describes a case of an intraosseous epidermoid cyst in a dog diagnosed with atopic dermatitis and chronic pododermatitis.

A Clival Mass Posing a Diagnostic Challenge: Pituitary Adenoma With Rathke Cleft Cyst Mimicking Chordoma.

Ectopic or extrasellar pituitary adenomas (PAs) in the clival region are extremely rare and can mimic aggressive skull base tumors on imaging, posing a diagnostic challenge. We present the case of a 54-year-old woman with a six-month history of severe, pulsatile headaches, without visual, endocrine, or neurological deficits. Laboratory evaluation revealed mild metabolic abnormalities. Imaging demonstrated a large, destructive clival mass with heterogeneous enhancement, bone erosion, lateral extension into the cavernous sinus and Meckel's cave, and encasement of the left internal carotid artery

Malignant Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor With Lung Metastasis.

Malignant phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (MPMT) are rarely seen soft tissue tumors. They can result in tumor-induced osteomalacia with hypophosphatemia. These tumors show FN1::FGFR1/FGF1 gene fusions. We present a 59-year-old male patient with a swelling in his right knee. Magnetic resonance imaging examination revealed a soft tissue mass with a maximum diameter of 2 cm in his distal right thigh. Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of atypical spindle cells. Coagulative tumor cell necrosis, extensive osteoid-like matrix, calcifications, and aneurysmal bone cyst-like areas were present

Does This Imaging Make Me Look NFATC2 ? The Value of Radiologic-pathologic Correlation in NFATC2 -rearranged Sarcomas of Bone.

Radiologic-pathologic correlation is essential for diagnostic accuracy, particularly when dealing with primary bone tumors. This investigation explores the unique radiographic and pathologic features of NFATC2- rearranged bone sarcomas. Inclusion criteria focused on primary bone sarcomas with NFATC2 fusions while excluding soft tissue sarcomas, benign bone cysts, and vascular neoplasms with similar fusions. Our cohort comprised 16 patients (12 males, 4 females) with a mean age of 45.6 years (range: 15 to 77 y). Tumors were located in the femur (n=9), tibia (n=3), humerus (n=2), ulna (n=1), and

Viscosity-Augmented Percutaneous Sclerotherapy for Recurrent Thoracic Spinal Aneurysmal Bone Cyst: A Technical Innovation to Mitigate Venous Washout.

A 27-year-old male was operated on for a thoracic seven-vertebra aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC). On the six-year follow-up, he had radiological signs of recurrence. Treatment plan for recurrence was multiple sessions of percutaneous intralesional sclerotherapy with 3% of sodium tetradecyl sulphate (STS). The remarkable vascularity of the lesion resulted in rapid washout of the sclerosant mixture. Henceforth, an improvised technique was used in the third attempt. A thick sclerosant mixture injectate consisting of 3 ml of 3% STS mixed with 2 ml of gelatin sponge slurry (EG Gel 350-650 micron) and 2

Multiple Ganglion Cysts of the Wrist and Leg in a 70-Year-Old Female: A Case Report.

A ganglion cyst is a noncancerous, fluid-filled swelling that usually forms near joints or tendons, with the wrist and hand being the most common locations. These cysts can range in size from small, pea-sized bumps to larger formations similar to the size of a golf ball, and their texture may vary from firm to spongy. Smaller cysts can be asymptomatic and are usually round or spherical in shape. The skin over the cyst may appear stretched and shiny. Ganglion cysts contain a mucoid, gel-like material rich in mucopolysaccharides. Some cysts occur intratendinously, extending deep into the underly

Solid Variant Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of the Trapezoid Bone: A Case Report.

An aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is classified as a benign osteoclastic giant cell-rich tumour. We report a case of a 48-year-old male patient with a solid variant ABC involving the trapezoid bone. We chose to fill the defect with bone cement after curettage. At the 12-month follow-up, the patient remained recurrence-free with satisfactory hand function. Carpal bone tumours are rare and typically benign, with malignant and metastatic lesions being extremely uncommon. We were unable to find any other reports of a solid variant ABC in the trapezoid bone. This case highlights the importance of histo
