Evaluating the efficacy of eggshell-derived hydroxyapatite (EHA) and synthetic hydroxyapatite (SHA) in bone regeneration of maxillofacial defects-a randomized double-blind pilot comparative clinical-radiological study.

BACKGROUND: Defects of the maxillofacial skeleton lead to functional, aesthetic, social, and behavioral problems, that make the person isolate from the mainstream of society. So, bone regeneration is needed for the overall health. Since long time various materials have been used for bone regeneration with limitations. Recently, Eggshell derived hydroxyapatite [EHA] has been explored as a graft substitute. Hence EHA is evaluated and compared with SHA (synthetic hydroxyapatite) for its efficacy to accelerate bone regeneration in maxillofacial cystic defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total of 20 b

Solitary bone cyst in a 57-year-old woman - A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary Bone Cysts (SBC) are rare, benign cystic lesions typically found in long bones in children and adolescents. Diagnosis is primarily made through X-ray and other radiological methods. Treatment options vary from observation to surgical procedures depending on each case. This case highlights the importance of recognizing SBC as a potential cause of mild skeletal discomfort in older patients, even in atypical locations. CASE PRESENTATION: This paper documents the case of a 57-year-old woman with a SBC in her proximal tibia with minimal symptoms. Diagnosis was made based on

Concurrent Breast Cancer and Vulvar Leiomyoma in a 62-Year-Old Patient: A Comprehensive Case Report.

The detection of incidental masses in cancer patients, such as vulvar leiomyomas, is rare and can complicate the diagnostic process. We report a case of a 62-year-old woman who presented with a large, neglected breast tumor, which raised clinical suspicion of metastatic breast cancer. A computed tomography scan showed an osteosclerotic pelvic lesion, raising concern for bone metastasis. A whole-body positron emission tomography scan revealed no bone metastasis but detected a hypermetabolic left vulvar mass, presumed to be a Bartholin cyst. Surgical excision confirmed it to be a vulvar leiomyom

Unusual Presentation of Childhood Leukemia With Vaginal Bleeding: A Case Report.

Introduction: This case report describes a 17-year-old female patient who initially presented with vaginal bleeding, weight loss, and nonspecific symptoms, which led to the diagnosis of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). This unusual presentation highlights the importance of considering hematological malignancies in patients with atypical symptoms. Case Presentation: The patient, married for 2 weeks, experienced vaginal bleeding following her first sexual intercourse, which did not resolve spontaneously. She also reported a 6 kg weight loss over the past 3-4 months, hair loss, and a

Cardiovascular disease and microbiome: focus on ischemic stroke.

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, encompassing conditions such as ischemic heart disease and ischemic stroke (IS), remain the leading global cause of death and disability. While traditional cardiovascular risk factors (eg, hypertension, diabetes, and atherosclerosis) are well established, emerging research underscores the critical role of gut microbiota in the development and progression of both cardiac and cerebrovascular events. The microbiota-gut-brain axis is a bidirectional communication system involving neural, immune, and metabolic pathways that link gut microbial activity to

Deep clinical and genetic analysis of 17p13.3 region: 38 pediatric patients diagnosed using next-generation sequencing and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Chromosome 17p13.3 is a region of genomic instability associated with different neurodevelopmental diseases. The malformation spectrum of 17p13.3 microdeletions ranges from an isolated lissencephaly sequence to Miller-Dieker syndrome, while 17p13.3 microduplications result in autism, learning disabilities, microcephaly and other brain malformations. This study aims to provide a more comprehensive delineation of the clinical and genetic characteristics associated with 17p13.3 alterations. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the next-generation sequencing (NGS) data of more than 40

Brown tumor in the pterygopalatine fossa with maxillary and sphenoidal involvement: a rare case report and literature review.

Brown tumors are rare focal giant-cell lesions resulting from the direct effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH) on bone tissue in hyperparathyroidism. Brown tumors most commonly affect long bones, pelvis, and ribs, whereas craniofacial involvement is uncommon, with pterygopalatine fossa involvement being exceedingly rare. This report presents a case of a 13-year-old girl with a rapidly progressing lesion in the pterygopalatine fossa, with involvement of the sphenoid and maxilla. The patient exhibited significant facial pain and V2 paresthesia, with imaging studies suggesting differential diagnos

Chronic kidney disease- mineral and bone disorder in autosomal dominant policystic kidney disease.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common genetic disorder characterized by bilateral renal cysts that detach from parental tubules, progressively leading to renal function loss. Patients with ADPKD represent a unique subset of chronic kidney disease (CKD) individuals, sharing common CKD features while also exhibiting distinct traits specific to ADPKD. This review described the unique patterns of mineral and bone disorders present in ADPKD in the early CKD stages. The principal points are: the extraosseous FGF23 production by cystic tissues in the kidneys and live

Parietal Meningocele Under the Scalp of a Fetus Diagnosed Based on Volume Contrast Imaging of Prenatal Three-Dimensional Ultrasound Data.

Determining the differential diagnosis of small scalp cysts identified on a fetus is difficult. In particular, many physicians have difficulty differentiating small meningoceles from small scalp cysts during the prenatal period. Volume contrast imaging increases contrast between tissues, thereby allowing an enhanced view of target structures. A 15 × 5 mm scalp cyst was identified on a fetus during a prenatal ultrasonography examination performed at 20 weeks of gestation. The cyst was not connected to the blood flow, and did not include the tissue of the brain parenchyma. Ventriculomegaly and o

Solid Variant of Aneurysmal Bone Cyst (SVABC) of the Left Fibula Bone: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Solid variant of aneurysmal bone cyst (SVABC) is a rare subtype of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) that presents as a solid, densely sclerotic lesion that can be more difficult to distinguish from other bone tumors and can lead to a wrong diagnosis. The SVABC rarely occurs in the long bones of the lower extremities. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we present a rare case of SVABC in a 25-year-old male patient, which was seen in the left fibula bone. The patient had a history of trauma for 7 years. A physical examination showed a non-tender swelling in his left fibula bone. A preope

Intradiploic Epidermoid Cyst Causing Transverse Sinus Compression in an Adolescent With Papilledema: A Rare Mimic of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) typically presents in young, obese women with symptoms such as headache, pulsatile tinnitus, and visual disturbances due to raised intracranial pressure. While IIH is commonly diagnosed in the absence of identifiable pathology, it is essential to rule out secondary causes that may mimic its presentation. Because calvarial lesions causing venous outflow obstruction are rare but clinically significant, early imaging is critical to differentiate secondary from idiopathic cases. We report the case of a 16-year-old female with a history of obesity, hyperte

Partial Resection of a Tailgut Cyst Attached to the Rectum via a Transcoccygeal Approach: A Case Report With a Favorable Outcome.

A tailgut cyst is a congenital cystic tumor that develops when the tailgut, derived from the hindgut in early embryonic development, fails to naturally regress and remains in this presacral space. Treatment typically involves surgical resection due to the possibility of cyst infection and neurological symptoms from compression. Various surgical approaches exist, including abdominal, transanal, and transsacral approaches. We report a case where partial resection of a tailgut cyst attached to the rectum was performed via a transcoccygeal approach, resulting in a favorable outcome. The patient wa

Chronic Thigh Pain in an Adolescent: A Case Report and Literature Review of Desmoplastic Fibroma, A Rare Benign Tumor.

INTRODUCTION: Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a very rare, benign but aggressive bone tumor. It makes up <0.1% of all bone tumors and is often mistaken for other conditions, such as bone cysts or giant cell tumors. DF can occur in different bones, but it is uncommon in the proximal femur. Because it looks like other bone diseases on X-rays, diagnosing it correctly can be difficult. Proper treatment is needed to prevent it from coming back. However, due to its rarity, treatment recommendations are largely based on individual case reports, limiting the ability to establish standardized protocols.

Giant Hydatid Cyst Originating From Psoas Muscle Extending to the Iliac Bone: A Case Report.

Hydatid cysts, caused by the Echinococcus granulosus parasite, predominantly affect the liver and lungs, but can also impact other organs such as the kidneys, brain, and muscles. Infection occurs when individuals ingest eggs from contaminated food or water, leading to cyst formation primarily in the liver. While hydatid cysts are commonly found in various endemic regions, muscular involvement is rare, particularly in the psoas muscle. This report presents a case of a muscular hydatid cyst, describes its management, and emphasizes the need for awareness and prompt intervention. A 50-year-old ma

Hydatidosis with Atypical Localization: Report of Three Cases and Literature Review.

Echinococcosis is a common parasitic disease with a heavy public health burden in many geographic regions and populations, mainly in the Mediterranean basin, Western China, Central Asia and South America. Most often, echinococcosis affects the liver and lungs. Despite being rare, other organ involvement may occur. We report three original cases of atypical localization of hydatid cysts from diagnosis to treatment to underline this disease's challenges. The affected organs are bone, heart, and brain. Thus, in endemic regions, hydatid cysts should be considered as a differential diagnosis of pat
