INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is a rare but locally aggressive neoplasm which most commonly arises in the epiphyses of long bones of young adults. Occurrence in the mandible is uncommon, and hormone secreting variants are extremely rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 16-year-old female, who presented with progressive swelling and pain in the left mandible after extraction of adjacent teeth. On examination, she had a large ulcerated intraoral mass with marked tooth mobility; imaging revealed a 4.7-cm expansive lytic lesion with cortical erosions and displacement o

An intraosseous pneumatocyst is a gas-containing cystic bone lesion that is not associated with infection or bone necrosis due to vertebral compression fracture. The most common sites are the pelvis and spine, but it is reported rarely in other sites. To our knowledge, only two cases of intraosseous pneumatocyst in the scapula have been reported. Herein, we report two cases of intraosseous pneumatocyst of the scapula, in a 41-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man. Neither patient had shoulder symptoms, and the lesions were found incidentally during imaging studies. Plain X-rays revealed cystic

AIM: To comparatively analyse and interpret the molecular profiles of sporadic odontogenic keratocysts (OKC) with bilateral non-syndromic odontogenic keratocysts employing next-generation sequencing (NGS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All histopathologically confirmed cases were processed for 50 hotspot gene panel using NGS, followed by protein-protein analysis using the STRING Consortium 2023.
RESULTS: Except for 1 case, which was seen in the maxilla in a female patient, all included cases affected the mandible in males. In sporadic cases, a missense mutation was frequently found with either gain

Simple bone cysts are intraosseous cavities that are surrounded by bony walls, and they are either empty or contain liquid and/or connective tissue. They have similar radiological findings to those of true cysts, but they do not have an epithelial lining and are thus regarded as pseudocysts. They are frequently asymptomatic and most often an incidental finding on radiographic examination. The purpose of this case report is to present a rare case of bilateral occurrence of mandibular simple bone cysts. A 23-year-old female patient presented to the Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology of t

Thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDCs) are among the most common congenital anomalies of the neck, typically presenting as painless midline masses inferior to the hyoid bone. Distinguishing TGDCs from other cystic neck lesions, such as ranulas or dermoid cysts, can be challenging, particularly when they arise in uncommon locations such as the sublingual space. Here, we report an atypical presentation of a TGDC in the sublingual space of a 31-year-old Hispanic/Latino White male. The patient, with no significant medical history, presented to the emergency department at the University of California San

Background and Clinical Significance: Vascular lesions of the face, particularly arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and mixed hemangiomas (MH), pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges because of their complex anatomy, unpredictable behavior, and high risk of bleeding. Surgical planning should be individualized and often requires a staged approach with meticulous interdisciplinary coordination to ensure patient safety. The presence of a concomitant odontogenic infection further complicates management, as local inflammation may exacerbate vascular instability and increase the risk

Cystic lesions of the anterior mandible in young adults present a diagnostic challenge owing to the overlapping clinical and radiographic features of odontogenic keratocysts, unicystic ameloblastomas, central giant cell lesions, and traumatic bone cysts. A 25-year-old man presented with localized pain and swelling of the anterior mandible. The left mandibular first premolar was nonvital, and panoramic radiography revealed a 2 × 3 cm well-defined radiolucent lesion with sclerotic, scalloped margins and associated external root resorption. Fine-needle aspiration cytology did not yield any fluid

Ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) is a highly aggressive malignant odontogenic epithelial tumor. It may occur in a pre-existing ameloblastoma, odontogenic cyst, or de novo. The condition is typically painful, highly invasive, and multifocally metastasizing in nature, with the lungs being the most common secondary tumor site. The condition is most often encountered in adult men during the sixth decade, with a propensity towards the posterior mandible. Radiographic examinations typically exhibit ill-defined and aggressive lesions with massive bone loss. Histopathological examination shows classic cyto

Intracranial epidermoid cysts (ECs) are rare benign congenital lesions characterized by slow growth and late clinical presentation. Giant ECs of the posterior fossa are exceptionally uncommon and typically associated with early neurological deterioration due to the confined anatomy in this region. We report the case of a 74-year-old woman presenting with chronic headache and mild vertigo, with no focal motor or cranial nerve deficits. MRI revealed a giant extra-axial EC of the left posterior fossa with occipital bone lysis on CT scan. Despite the radiological findings, no acute hydrocephalus o

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to compare the immunohistochemical expression of SOX2 and cytokeratins (CKs) 5, 8 and 18 in the lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) and gingival cyst of the adult (GCA) with the more aggressive botryoid odontogenic cyst (BOC), to evaluate diagnostic or prognostic utility.
METHODS: Sections from archival paraffin blocks were processed for immunohistochemical localization of SOX2 and CKs 5, 8 and 18. Sections from 6 odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) were included for comparison with a cyst that enlarges more rapidly and has a higher rate of recurrence than most oth

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) has long been viewed as a cartilage-centered disease, but a whole-joint model now positions the subchondral bone and the osteochondral unit as biologically active, mechanically decisive participants. Bone marrow lesions (BMLs), abnormal subchondral remodeling, and progressive deterioration of the subchondral bone plate (SBP) precede cartilage failure, suggesting a potential pre-collapse therapeutic window before irreversible articular surface collapse. We review evidence for combining extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), which provides mechanotransductive conditio

Maxillary sinus cysts typically occur as postoperative maxillary cysts arising years after sinonasal surgery. In contrast, trauma-related cysts are uncommon, and cases specifically following zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture repair are exceedingly rare. We report a maxillary sinus cyst that developed 28 years after open reduction and internal fixation of a zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture. At the initial injury, the orbital floor fracture remained untreated, and the posterior maxillary wall was displaced anteriorly. These structures likely contacted each other and formed a bony partitio

Though the diagnostic utility of H3.3G34W immunohistochemistry (IHC) for giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is well established, it is limited by a proportion of cases with variant H3-3A mutations [H3-3A: c.104G>T p. Gly35Val (G34V), H3-3A: c.103G>A p. Gly35Arg (G34R), H3-3A: c.103_104delinsCT p. Gly35Leu (G34L)], wild-type genotype and H3-3A:c.103G>T p. Gly35Trp (G34W) mutation identified by sequencing but not by IHC. In this study, the H3-3A gene mutation by Sanger sequencing was analyzed in a large cohort of GCTB and its histological mimics. Sequencing of the H3-3A gene was performed to detect

McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the triad of café-au-lait skin pigmentation, fibrous dysplasia, and peripheral precocious puberty. We report the case of a three-year-old girl presenting with recurrent vaginal bleeding and progressive breast development. Clinical examination revealed café-au-lait macules, and hormonal evaluation showed elevated estradiol levels with suppressed gonadotropins. Pelvic ultrasound demonstrated ovarian cysts. Bone age was advanced compared to chronological age. Additional imaging with technetium-99m bone scintigraphy reveale

BACKGROUND: Self-limiting or degenerative upper extremity musculoskeletal conditions (UEMSCs) are common and often managed without medical intervention. This study aims to identify latent subgroups of these conditions in individuals who do not seek care, by examining a range of biopsychosocial factors. Understanding these patterns, can provide insights to inform personalized and comprehensive care strategies for individuals who do seek medical attention for musculoskeletal illnesses.
METHODS: A total of 4,635 healthcare staff who provided consent were included in a within cohort-cross-section

Primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma (PCAC) is an exceptionally rare malignant adnexal neoplasm arising from apocrine sweat glands. Scalp involvement is particularly uncommon, especially when occurring in association with syringocystadenoma papilliferum (SCAP), making diagnosis and management challenging. We report the case of a 56-year-old woman with a congenital left occipital scalp lesion that remained stable for decades before demonstrating progressive enlargement over the preceding two years. Clinical examination revealed a solitary exophytic scalp mass without palpable cervical lymphaden

Cholesterol granulomas and cysts represent uncommon pathological findings in the paranasal cavities; however, they have also been documented in other areas, including the orbit, the petrous part of the temporal bone, and the nasal septum, among others. Histologically, they are composed of granulation tissue and a significant quantity of cholesterol crystals. The etiology of the disease is primarily associated with microtraumas in the affected structures, which result in the rupture of small blood vessels. This phenomenon leads to the accumulation of formed elements and cholesterol in the affec

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign but locally aggressive osseous neoplasm that predominantly affects children and young adults, with skull base involvement being uncommon. We report a 59-year-old woman with a progressively enlarging clival ABC extending into the sphenoid sinus and right cavernous sinus. She initially presented with right frontal headache and subsequently developed progressive diplopia, ptosis, ophthalmoplegia, and trigeminal sensory impairment. An initial endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal biopsy was interpreted as a mucocele; however, continued clinical deterioration a

Eggshell-derived nanohydroxyapatite (EnHA) is an economical, bioactive, and biocompatible bone graft substitute that has been shown to promote active bone formation. It has previously been used in socket preservation and periodontal defects. Autologous blood products such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), and concentrated growth factor (CGF) are being studied extensively for their role in bone regeneration. CGF has shown osteoinductive properties by promoting vascularization and early angiogenesis. Surgical enucleation of a cystic lesion measuring 17.7 × 15.1 mm was pe
