Multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) is a common congenital renal anomaly often considered benign when unilateral and managed conservatively. We report a female infant diagnosed antenatally with left-sided MCDK in the setting of maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Postnatal imaging confirmed a nonfunctioning left kidney and a structurally normal right kidney with reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 49.7 mL/min/1.73 m². Laparoscopic nephrectomy at six months revealed complete parenchymal replacement by cysts with focal cartilaginous metaplasia. Over four years of follow-up, th

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral precocious puberty (PP) is far less commonly encountered compared to central precocious puberty (CPP) in pediatric endocrine practice. Long-standing non-diagnosis may cause rapidly advancing bone age, leading to CPP and resultant short stature. We aimed to report the clinical profile and current Indian experience in the management of children with peripheral PP due to autonomous gonadal activation.
METHODS: This multicentric retrospective study reports data on 23 children (20 girls) presenting with peripheral PP as a result of autonomous gonadal activation from eight

Primary talar bone tumors are rare. Surgical intervention on talar bone tumors is often challenging, even though most lesions are benign. Due to its unique anatomical and biomechanical characteristics, this surgical approach requires careful consideration. Although most benign talar tumors can be treated with curettage alone, insufficient visualization increases the risk of recurrence, making the selection of an appropriate surgical approach crucial. We performed a chevron-type medial malleolar osteotomy, a technique widely used for its excellent exposure and stability, to manage talar tumors.

Gardner fibroma (GF) is a rare benign tumor of soft tissues, most frequently described in children and adolescents, and occasionally representing an early manifestation of familial adenomatous polyposis. We report a case of a 14-month-old infant with no relevant medical history who presented with a midline occipital mass. The lesion was well-epithelialized and non-fistulized, with no evidence of pus, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, or inflammation, and measured 7 × 7 × 8 cm. Neurological examination was normal. Computed tomography revealed a heterogeneous, hypodense soft tissue mass with punctate

This study aimed to assess the efficacy of using adult 3.5 mm proximal humerus locking plates (PHLPs) for treating benign proximal femur lesions in skeletally immature pediatric patients. Between 2011 and 2021, 22 skeletally immature pediatric patients were treated with adult 3.5 mm PHLPs for benign lesions of the proximal femur. During this period, indications for the procedure included lesions involving bone cyst (BC), aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC), and fibrous dysplasia (FD) of the proximal femur, resulting in impending or actual pathologic fractures. The mean follow-up time for the entire gro

INTRODUCTION: Dienogest (DNG) is widely used to manage endometriosis-associated pain; however, long-term data comparing low and standard doses are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of 48-week DNG treatment (1 mg/day vs. 2 mg/day) in patients with endometriosis-related dysmenorrhea (composite score).
METHODS: In this randomized, open-label, parallel-group, trial, 88 patients with endometriosis were enrolled, all of whom had at least one ovarian endometriotic cyst confirmed by imaging. Other phenotypes of endometriosis, such as deep infiltrating or periton

Chondrosarcoma is the most common malignant bone tumour amongst the elderly. However, they often present as diagnostic dilemmas leading to diagnostic delays, leading to poor prognosis in elderly patients. Chondrosarcoma of the foot is also exceedingly rare, comprising <6% of bone tumors, where its clinical presentation can mimic common soft tissue conditions such as plantar fasciitis. We report the case of a 79-year-old female who presented with non-mechanical right foot pain involving the heel, initially misdiagnosed as plantar fasciitis for two years. Her foot pain remained recalcitrant to c

Introduction A jaw cyst is a pathological lesion that can affect both the maxillary and mandibular bones. The treatment of choice is complete surgical removal by enucleation. The healing process after enucleation has often been assessed using two-dimensional methods, but a three-dimensional approach may offer a more accurate evaluation. This study aims to assess whether the preoperative volume of a cyst influences the shrinkage rate after enucleation. It also explores the impact of other variables, such as age, gender, location, and defect configuration, on the shrinkage rate. Methods Preopera

BACKGROUND: Lacrimal sac cysts (LSCs) are rare lacrimal drainage system (LDS) lesions that often present as medial canthal masses or epiphoras in adults. Computed tomography (CT) and computed tomography dacryocystography (CT-DCG) can aid in the diagnosis of LDS; however, the literature is limited to case reports and adult systematic studies, and discriminative imaging pattern and LDS anatomical change analyses are lacking, hindering treatment. Thus, this study sought to analyze the CT/CT-DCG features and LDS anatomy of adults to address these gaps in the literature.
METHODS: This single-cente

Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is thought to be an odontogenic cyst of developmental origin that can arise at any place in the jaws, but mostly occurs in the mandibular angle and ramus area. It is clinically indistinguishable from a lateral periodontal cyst. A proper diagnosis can only be made based on histopathological examination. A 47-year-old woman presented with a gingival swelling on the inner aspect of the anterior region of the lower jaw. The swelling was of one year's duration and asymptomatic. Intraoral periapical radiograph revealed a well-defined oval radiolucency in the interradicul

Xenograft bone, autologous bone grafts or allogeneic bones from a bone bank are used for bone augmentation, reconstruction or other purposes, when the volume, shape, and size of each jawbone defect require different bone materials. In the case of some bigger and locally advanced bone defects, the use of allogeneic bone can be suitable and used with great success if the wound and bone are especially carefully maintained; however, the healing period of each bone depends on good and stable wound closure followed by improved local antiseptic protocol. The individuality of each bone defect might al

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is driven in nearly all cases by mutations that constitutively activate upstream Hedgehog (HH) signaling, either through loss-of-function mutations in PTCH1 or gain-of-function mutations in SMO. Unlike other skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma, a clinically apparent precursor lesion for BCC has not been identified. Recent genomic analyses of both human and mouse tumors suggest that BCC formation requires not only PTCH1 or SMO mutations but also additional genetic changes. These findings imply that some BCCs may follow a stepwise tumor progression model, wher

BACKGROUND: Neuronavigation (NN) has become an essential tool in modern neurosurgery, enabling more precise and safer intracranial procedures. While its use is well-documented in high-income settings, there are limited data from Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study presents a retrospective case series of NN-guided neurosurgical procedures performed in Malawi, aiming to describe the patient demographics, surgical indications, and interventions over a three-year period.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all patients who und

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign, osteolytic lesions characterised by blood-filled spaces separated by fibrous septa. Although benign, ABCs exhibit locally aggressive behaviour, leading to significant bone destruction. These cysts primarily affect children and young adults, often occurring in the metaphysis of long bones and the spine. Spinal ABCs are particularly concerning due to the potential for neurological deficits caused by spinal cord compression. The pathogenesis of ABCs remains under investigation, with evidence suggesting both a vascular origin and genetic abnormalities invol

Cystic bone lesions of the hand encompass a heterogeneous group of entities presenting as mostly well-defined lytic areas on imaging. The most common entities are ganglion cysts and degenerative geodes, typically arising adjacent to joints in adults. Primary masses include simple (unicameral) and aneurysmatic bone cysts. Also, other benign tumors like enchondroma, epidermoid inclusion cyst, giant cell tumor, fibrous dysplasia, tenosynovial giant cell tumor, and brown tumor can appear as expansile lucent lesions. Inflammatory processes such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout often produce focal os

A 9-year-old boy with Gorlin syndrome (GS) developed asymptomatic palmar papules. Histopathologic examination of these lesions revealed angulated basaloid nests surrounded by sclerotic stroma in the upper dermis, with overlying epidermal atrophy and hypogranulosis. These findings align with previously described basaloid proliferations in palmoplantar lesions of GS, distinct from the typical basal cell carcinomas found in other skin areas. Unlike basal cell carcinomas, these lesions remained stable during follow-up. This case highlights the unique histopathologic features of palmoplantar lesion

BACKGROUND: Gorlin syndrome (GS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a predisposition to developing numerous basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) throughout life. The absence of specific clinical guidelines for managing BCCs in GS has resulted in fragmented care and inconsistent treatment approaches.
OBJECTIVE: To develop evidence-based guidelines for managing BCCs in GS, addressing both clinical and psychosocial challenges.
METHODS: A multidisciplinary panel employed a modified Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach, integrating systematic reviews, expert

Severe spontaneous hemoperitoneum resulting from a ruptured ovarian cyst is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening condition. Its occurrence as the initial presentation of underlying aplastic anemia is even more unusual, with only a handful of cases reported in the literature. We present the case of a 17-year-old female patient whose first manifestation of undiagnosed aplastic anemia was significant intra-abdominal bleeding from a ruptured ovarian cyst, requiring emergency laparoscopic intervention. Subsequent investigations confirmed aplastic anemia of unknown etiology. The patient is c

BACKGROUND: Galactocele, also known as lactocele, is a retention cyst resulting from lactiferous duct occlusion that typically occurs during lactation. Although a galactocele can occur anywhere along the milk line extending from the axilla to the groin, it has a propensity to form in the retroareolar region of the breasts. While small galactoceles are common, giant ones greater than 10 cm, especially in non-lactating women, are very rare and can mimic more ominous disease states on imaging.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 34-year-old woman who stopped breastfeeding 5 years ago, and
