Predicting Clinical Outcome in Dengue Fever: A Retrospective Cohort Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever demonstrates a broad spectrum of clinical severity, ranging from self-limiting illness to life-threatening complications. Early identification of patients at risk of progression remains a clinical challenge, particularly in high-burden settings. Although platelet count and World Health Organization (WHO) dengue classification are routinely used in clinical practice, reliance on individual parameters may not adequately capture the multifactorial nature of disease severity. Development of multivariable predictive models integrating clinical and laboratory markers availab

Understanding Obesity through a Public Health Lens.

Obesity is a complex and chronic public health challenge that reflects deep-rooted social, economic, and environmental determinants rather than solely individual choices. Its global prevalence has risen sharply over recent decades, affecting more than one in eight people worldwide, with a growing burden in low- and middle-income countries. This paper explores obesity as a complex and growing public health challenge that extends beyond individual behavior. It highlights the social, economic, and environmental factors driving the epidemic, with a focus on the Indian context where undernutrition

[Overweight and lung diseases].

Overweight increases dyspnea and cough. Overweight patients with asthma experience more symptoms, frequent exacerbations and have poorer effects of asthma medications. In COPD, light and moderate overweight are associated with a better prognosis, whereas severe overweight is not. Similar protective effects of overweight have been reported in severe bacterial pneumonia and ARDS, but not in COVID-19 or severe influenza. This review finds that the beneficial effects of weight loss are best documented in asthma and in respiratory sleep-related disorders.

[When mosquitoes no longer fear the cold: arboviruses in Europe].

Infectious diseases result from complex interactions between a host, a pathogen and a vector within a given environment. Over recent decades, climate change, population movements and international trade have contributed to the emergence of arboviruses in temperate regions by facilitating the establishment of their vectors and pathogens. The presence of Aedes and Culex mosquitoes in Europe enables local transmission of viruses such as dengue (DENV), chikungunya (CHIKV) and West Nile virus (WNV). Clinicians should therefore consider these infections in the differential diagnosis of febrile illne

A subunit vaccine protects A129 mice from death and joint swelling against lethal Chikungunya virus challenge.

INTRODUCTION: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is primarily transmitted to humans through bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes, causing febrile illness as well as acute or chronic arthritis. With increasing reports in previously non-endemic regions, it poses an emerging threat to public health and a growing risk to travelers. Despite the recent approval of live-attenuated and virus-like particle-based vaccines, a safe, efficacious, and cost-effective vaccine remains urgently needed. The envelope glycoproteins E1 and E2, which play crucial roles in viral attachment and entry, are the major immunodominan

Integrated immunoreactivity analysis of MHC-I epitopes derived from the Marburg virus glycoprotein.

INTRODUCTION: Marburg virus (MARV) is a hemorrhagic fever virus, and its glycoprotein (GP) represents an important target for vaccine research. MHC class I (MHC-I)-restricted T cell epitopes are critical for inducing cytotoxic CD8+ T cell responses. In this study, we aimed to identify MHC-I-restricted T cell epitopes derived from the MARV Angola strain GP through an integrated bioinformatics and experimental approach. METHODS: We retrieved the MARV Angola strain GP sequence and divided it into 673 overlapping 9-mer peptides. By integrating five computational prediction algorithms, immunogenic

Ambient air pollution and meteorological factors associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease risk in Shenzhen, China: a time-series study.

BACKGROUND: In China, hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) persists as a prevalent infectious disease with high transmissibility. Nevertheless, the link between environmental determinants and HFMD incidence has not been fully elucidated. The study assessed associations between air pollution, meteorological conditions, and HFMD incidence in Shenzhen, China, while also evaluating shifts in these associations before and after the Enterovirus 71 vaccine and during the COVID-19 epidemic. METHODS: Daily data on HFMD cases, air pollutants (such as PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO, and O3), and meteorologic

Reliability and validity of the Turkish translation of the MOS-HIV health survey in people living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a key patient-centered outcome in HIV care, particularly in the current treatment era in which virological control is increasingly achievable but residual physical, mental, and social burden may persist. However, the clinical applicability of HIV-specific HRQoL instruments in Turkish-speaking people living with HIV (PLWH) remains insufficiently established. We aimed to characterize HRQoL in a multicenter Turkish sample of PLWH and to evaluate whether the Turkish version of the Medical Outcomes Study HIV Health Survey (MOS-HIV) provides reli

Cluster investigation report: a probable urine-associated transmission event of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome-a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne viral disease with a high case fatality rate. Human-to-human transmission has been increasingly documented, primarily through direct contact with blood or bloody secretions. On June 21, 2025, a case of SFTS was reported in Zhumadian City, Henan Province. On July 3, a second case-epidemiologically linked to the first-was reported to the local Centers for Disease Control (CDC) through the notifiable disease reporting system, following laboratory confirmation on July 1. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old fem

hMPV M2-2 protein modulates host mRNA alternative splicing to favor virus replication.

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a widespread and prevalent respiratory pathogen, yet the mechanisms by which hMPV modulates host gene expression to facilitate replication remain incompletely characterized. Here, we systematically profiled hMPV-host protein-protein interactions by affinity purification-mass spectrometry and assessed their impact on host messenger RNA (mRNA) splicing using RNA sequencing, complemented by genetic perturbation, protein interaction assays, and fluorescence microscopy-based subcellular localization and colocalization analyses. Among the viral proteins analyzed, the

A dual recombinant strategy to quantify PreS1 antibody in hepatitis B patients with genotype B or C virus by ELISA.

Elevated levels of anti-preS1 antibodies in patients correlate with faster hepatitis B virus (HBV) clearance, since preS1 is vital for viral entry. However, accurate quantification of preS1 antibodies is hindered by the variation of HBV genotypes. Herein, a quantitative preS1 antibody assay was developed for Chinese patients with predominant HBV genotypes B and C. First, to address genotype diversity, we constructed a dual recombinant protein combining genotype B and C preS1. Second, a mouse-human chimeric antibody with high and comparable affinity for both B and C preS1 is developed as the st

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome-associated encephalitis and intracranial hypotension: A case report.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a natural infectious disease caused by severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV). Central nervous system (CNS) involvement is not rare in SFTS. In this work, we report a case of SFTS with CNS symptom onset and the metagenomic next-generation sequencing of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), confirming invasion of SFTSV into the CNS. The case's lumbar puncture indicated an exceptionally low CSF opening pressure-an uncommon finding in other CNS infections and in case reports of SFTS. A spontaneous subdural effusion was observed on the

Early initiation of antiviral treatment for two infants with acute HBV infection: Beneficial or unfavorable?

Mother-to-child transmission is the major route of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in children, and antiviral therapy is generally deferred in infancy due to presumed immune tolerance. Here, we report the clinical course and treatment response of two infants younger than 6 months with HBV infection who initiated antiviral therapy due to elevated serum transaminase levels indicative of an immune-active status. Notably, Case #01 achieved a functional cure after 25 months of antiviral treatment. Case #02 did not achieve a functional cure but attained HBV DNA clearance and HBeAg seroconversion a

One Health surveillance of bat virome in mainland Southeast Asia and adjacent regions.

Bats are critical viral reservoirs that harbor viromes with high cross-species transmission risks, yet their virome diversity in the mainland Southeast Asia and adjacent regions remains underexplored. Here, we characterized the bat viromes from 659 samples (197 individuals, 16 species) from Yunnan province and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, China, as well as from Cambodia, using next-generation sequencing (NGS). RNA sequencing, viral classification, phylogenetic analyses, and deep learning-based host adaptability analysis were performed to reveal the viral composition and cross-species tran

[Attitudes of school principals towards classroom ventilation in the Region of Murcia (Spain) after COVID-19].

OBJECTIVE: COVID-19 remains a highly communicable disease in poorly ventilated closed environments. In Spain, prevention guidelines on transmission in schools were developed, emphasizing the need for adequate ventilation. In the Region of Murcia, the last update of these guidelines was carried out in 2022. The objective of this research was to evaluate the attitudes and behaviors of the principals of public schools in this region towards preventive ventilation measures in classrooms after the end of the COVID-19 health emergency. The level of compliance with these measures during the 2023/24 a

[The institutionalization of vaccination in Spain: from smallpox to the National Vaccination Schedule (1803-1975)].

Vaccination has played a central role in the historical development of public health in Spain and in the progressive institutionalization of state health intervention. From the late eighteenth century onwards, the fight against smallpox acted as a driving force for increasingly systematic preventive policies, evolving from variolation to jennerian vaccination and its administrative regulation. The Royal Philanthropic Vaccine Expedition (1803-1813) represented the first major milestone in this process, transforming vaccination into an organized, permanent practice under public authority. Cumulative exposure to integrase inhibitors and metabolic factors as independent predictors of severe hepatic steatosis in people with HIV.

BACKGROUND: The progressive ageing of people living with HIV (PLWH) has increased hepatic and metabolic comorbidities. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the impact of HIV-related, metabolic and behavioural factors on hepatic steatosis and fibrosis development using vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE). METHODS: This is a single-centre cross-sectional study evaluating an Italian cohort of PLWH at an academic medical centre. Steatosis (via CAP, dB/m) and fibrosis (kPa) were assessed using VCTE. Lifestyle habits were investigated through a structured questionnaire. Factors associat

Yellow Fever Outbreaks Are Not Associated With Long-Term Negative Human Perceptions of Wild Primates in Brazil.

Human perceptions of wildlife are fundamental to guiding effective strategies for conserving biodiversity and public health. Zoonotic diseases affecting non-human primates, such as yellow fever (YF), may trigger negative human behaviors toward these species. We conducted 474 semi-structured interviews across seven municipalities in Minas Gerais (n = 324 respondents) and Bahia (n = 150), Brazil, and used mixed-effects models to evaluate whether human perceptions of marmosets (Callithrix sp.) and howler monkeys (Alouatta sp.) differed according to previous YF outbreaks. YF occurrence was not con

The aMAP Score Effectively Stratifies Hepatocellular Carcinoma Risk in the Steatotic Liver Disease Population.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Steatotic liver disease (SLD) is an increasingly important cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), yet validated risk stratification tools remain limited. We aim to evaluate the aMAP score, initially developed for HCC risk prediction mainly in viral hepatitis across international cohorts, in the SLD population. METHODS: 156 406 SLD participants were included from the UK Biobank (UKB) and 3166 SLD patients with virally suppressed chronic hepatitis B from a Chinese cohort. The predictive and stratification performance of the aMAP score was assessed and compared with the PAGE

Exploring antimicrobial resistance in wild and domestic animal populations: combining publicly available data with BV-BRC resources to introduce bioinformatics in an undergraduate classroom.

Bioinformatics blends the fields of biology, statistics, computer science, and information technology for the processing and analysis of genomic data. Despite the growing demand for trained bioinformaticians and a positive job market outlook, most undergraduate institutions struggle to integrate bioinformatics into their life science curricula. Educators face numerous barriers to incorporating bioinformatics into their classes, including technical issues and expertise. To address this need, we are developing web-accessible, course-based materials for general microbiology, infectious disease, g
