BACKGROUND: Studies on transgender women living with HIV (TWH) are scarce in Europe. We aimed to describe TWH and their care continuum during years 1997-2023 in France, focusing on determinants of time to antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation.
METHODS: In this longitudinal cohort study, we included treatment-naïve TWH with immuno-virological data from the ANRS CO4 French Hospital Database on HIV (FHDH). HIV care continuum outcomes, ART and viral suppression rates, and time intervals between HIV diagnosis, ART initiation, and viral suppression, were analyzed across three calendar periods (19

Bacteriophage endolysins can specifically bind to and efficiently lyse host bacteria, and therefore considered promising alternatives to antibiotics. Natural endolysins, however, often have limitations such as a narrow lytic spectrum or low lytic activity, which restrict their broader application in food antibacterial control. In this study, a recombinant endolysin JD007-LY01 with a stable protein structure was constructed by fusing the binding domain of the native endolysin LY01 with the lytic domain of the exogenous endolysin JD007. Experimental results showed that JD007-LY01 lysed all Staph

GTSF1 is an essential activating cofactor for PIWI proteins in many metazoans. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, however, GTSF-1 does not bind PIWI, but is associated with the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase RRF-3, supporting endo-siRNA (26G-RNA) biogenesis. Here, we demonstrate that this rewiring is deeply conserved across nematodes. For C. briggsae and Pristionchus pacificus, we show that GTSF-1 interacts with RRF-3 and is essential for 26G-RNA production and fertility. We map this interaction to an N-terminal domain of RRF-3, termed the GTSF-1 interacting domain (GID), and show that the

Background/Objectives: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic profoundly disrupted global respiratory virus circulation, with sharp declines during 2020-2021, followed by a resurgence after the relaxation of public health measures. In South America, post-pandemic respiratory virus dynamics remain insufficiently characterized, particularly in ecologically diverse regions. Arequipa, a high-altitude city in southern Peru, has unique environmental conditions, including marked seasonal temperature variability, that may influence viral transmission. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Severe pneumonia is associated with high mortality rates. Nutritional and inflammatory status significantly impacts outcomes. While albumin-based indices have been demonstrated to predict outcomes in other diseases, their role in severe pneumonia remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the association between albumin-based nutritional inflammation indices and all-cause mortality in patients with severe pneumonia. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from the SCRIPT CarpeDiem Dataset. 488 critically ill patients with severe pneumonia

Seasonal influenza vaccines are most frequently delivered as intramuscular inactivated vaccines, which elicit systemic responses against the immunodominant hemagglutinin (HA) head domain. An intranasally administered, live-attenuated influenza vaccine designed to stimulate mucosal immunity, FluMist, is the sole intranasal vaccine approved in the United States. However, FluMist has lower systemic immunogenicity and efficacy in adults compared with intramuscular formulations. In this study, human mucosal and systemic immunity were examined after seasonal intramuscular or intranasal vaccination.

Marine algal polysaccharides have been widely investigated as antiviral candidates, yet nearly all anti-dengue studies have focused on sulfated species. Whether algal polysaccharides lacking prominent sulfation can inhibit dengue virus (DENV) remains unexplored. Here, we profiled the stage-specific antiviral activity of a heteropolysaccharide (GLHP) from Gracilaria lemaneiformis, whose Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum lacks characteristic sulfate ester absorption bands, against DENV serotype 2 (DENV-2) in Huh7 and BHK-21 cells. GLHP exhibited low cytotoxicity (CC50 exceeding 1000 μg

BACKGROUND: Respiratory tract infections are a leading cause of hospitalization in patients under 18 years of age and remain a major contributor to pediatric morbidity worldwide. Understanding the epidemiology of viral pathogens—including their seasonal trends and response to global events like pandemics—is essential for public health planning, surveillance strategies, and timely clinical interventions. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated the epidemiology and dynamics of respiratory virus detection in hospitalized patients younger than 18 years before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic

Myocarditis, the inflammatory disease of the myocardium, is one of the leading causes of dilated cardiomyopathy and sudden cardiac death. Coxsackievirus B (CVB) is one of the common pathogens of myocarditis and cardiomyopathy. In spite of the high prevalence of CVB infection, effective antiviral therapy is lacking, primarily due to that there is no approved antiviral drug available. In the previous study, we demonstrated that the neddylation of 3Dpol, the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, promotes CVB replication. Therefore, we propose that targeting neddylation might be a therapeutic strategy aga

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary fibrosis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are the clinical challenges among patients with post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), affecting ~ 10% of the survivors worldwide. PASC manifestations include pulmonary fibrosis, impaired respiratory function, and long-term morbidity. Recent WHO reports from 83 countries also describe severe morbidity among COVID-19 survivors associated with PASC, indicating an unmet need to address the issue. We developed a mouse model showing the above disease pathophysiology, and investigated the related signalling molecules, wit

Seasonal influenza and SARS-CoV-2 are respiratory viruses that represent a global health concern, causing substantial numbers of hospitalizations and mortality, particularly among high-risk groups, including infants and older adults. Together these associated respiratory diseases and related complications are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Although effective vaccines are available for protection against influenza and COVID-19, vaccine uptake remains below the levels recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Increasing vaccination coverage is critical for protect

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a ~15.2 kb negative-sense RNA virus, causes acute respiratory infections in infants and older adults. Its two subtypes, RSV-A and RSV-B, evolve rapidly, making ongoing monitoring of circulating strains essential. The Georgia Public Health Laboratory (GPHL) developed and evaluated an amplicon-based whole-genome sequencing (WGS) assay for RSV surveillance. A total of 214 de-identified remnant clinical specimens (102 RSV-A and 112 RSV-B) with RT-PCR Cq values <31 were included. RSV genomes were amplified using ARTIC-style and custom primer sets, with the ARTIC s

Infant RSV prevention is undergoing a public-health paradigm shift toward scalable, broad-eligibility passive immunization. This review examines nirsevimab (Beyfortus®), a long-acting recombinant IgG1κ monoclonal antibody targeting the conserved site Ø of prefusion RSV F protein. Its extended half-life enables season-long protection with a single dose, overcoming key limitations of palivizumab. A validated manufacturing platform and stringent release specifications ensure consistent quality and potency. Pivotal trials demonstrated high efficacy against RSV-associated lower respiratory tract in

Understanding the transmission routes of avian influenza viruses (AIVs) is critical for outbreak control. Beyond direct contact and aerosol transmission, indirect transmission via contaminated environmental surfaces contributes to exposure risk, particularly in live poultry markets (LPMs). Although previous studies have examined the environmental persistence of individual AIV strains, systematic comparisons among genetically related viruses remain scarce. H9N2, designated by the WHO as a potential "Pathogen X," is of particular concern. Here, we assessed the environmental persistence and indir

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of acute lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in young children. In children <5 years old, it causes an estimated 33 million LRTI episodes and over 100,000 deaths annually, two-thirds of which occur in infants. The licensure of new long-acting monoclonal antibodies and a maternal RSV vaccine offer opportunities for reducing RSV related infant morbidity and mortality.
AREAS COVERED: This drug profile reviews clesrovimab (Enflonsia, Merck & Co. Inc. Rahway, NJ U.S.A.), an extended half-life human IgG1κ monoclonal antibody, t

BACKGROUND: Clinical evidence increasingly supports that in children harboring underlying dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) associated genetic variants, respiratory viral infection frequently serves as the unmasking trigger, precipitating fulminant cardiac dysfunction. Herein, we report a case of DCM with a homozygous loss-of-function CAP2 variant which was firstly identified by virus infection triggered fulminant cardiac dysfunction. This case reinforces the link between cytoskeletal dysfunction and cardiac electromechanical failure, while also expanding the adverse impacts of virus infection in D

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a leading cause of heart failure, but up to 50% of cases have no definitive etiology. Genetic susceptibility alone does not account for phenotypic inconsistency, so a 'two-hit' model has been proposed to explore the spectrum of gene-environment interactions. Certain triggers, such as alcohol, chemotherapy agents, and viral myocarditis, are well-established second hits in the pathogenesis of DCM. The exposome, which encompasses environmental and social exposures across the lifespan, provides a more comprehensive framework to understand these interactions. In pati

BACKGROUND: Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCABG) is favoured to reduce surgical trauma during myocardial revascularisation. Severe chronic respiratory conditions, such as interstitial lung disease, are known to significantly complicate perioperative management and long-term survival. For patients with a history of serious cerebral infarction or advanced respiratory disease, awake OPCABG under high thoracic epidural anaesthesia (TEA) provides a highly beneficial alternative to conventional general anaesthesia.
