Osteitis condensans ilii is a noninflammatory condition of an uncertain etiology, characterized by sclerotic bone lesions located mainly in the iliac region of the sacroiliac joints. In many patients, osteitis condensans ilii remains an incidental imaging finding; however, it has been associated with lower back pain and may mimic inflammatory rheumatic conditions such as axial spondyloarthritis. The diagnosis is based on the presence of the characteristic sclerotic lesions on radiographs and the exclusion of other conditions that are associated with back pain. Management is usually conservativ

BACKGROUND: The skull encompasses and houses one of the most important organs in the body-the brain-and like all tissues in the body, it is comprised of living cells that are constantly remodeling as this maintains the strength and homeostasis of the bone. In the present study, abnormal bone growth patterns were observed and the possible causes of said findings were investigated in multiple cadaver skulls dissected during head and neck anatomy courses at Detroit Mercy Dental over the past year. There are many factors, both intrinsic and extrinsic, with differences in stimulation to the skull r

Juvenile Paget's disease (JPD) became in 1974 the commonly used name for ultra-rare heritable occurrences of rapid bone remodeling throughout of the skeleton that present in infancy or early childhood as fractures and deformity hallmarked biochemically by marked elevation of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity (hyperphosphatasemia). Untreated, JPD can kill during childhood or young adult life. In 2002, we reported that homozygous deletion of the gene called tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, member 11B (TNFRSF11B) encoding osteoprotegerin (OPG) explained JPD in Navajos. Soon aft

OBJECTIVE: Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) can coexist with other benign lesions of the jaw. These hybrid lesions are diagnostically challenging to both oral pathologists and radiologists. This work systematically reviews the clinical and radiographic features of hybrid-CGCG lesions in the jaws.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three reviewers conducted an electronic search of five databases for histologically diagnosed hybrid-CGCG lesions in human jaws.
RESULTS: Thirty-four of 1224 articles met the inclusion criteria. Of 39 hybrid-CGCG lesions, 14 (35.9%) were central odontogenic fibroma, 11 (28.

Paget disease of bone is a benign disorder characterized by focal areas of increased bone turnover in one or more skeletal sites. It usually affects older adults, and men are at a higher risk than women. Any bone may be affected, but the disease has a high preference for the pelvis, spine, skull, and long bones. Pain is the most common symptom, and presentation of the disease may depend on which bones are affected, the extent of involvement, and the presence of complications. Paget disease of bone may be asymptomatic, and suspicion arises from incidental findings of elevated serum alkaline pho

We here report on 2 cases of monostotic Paget's disease of bone, one in the ilium and the other in the skull, including quantitative values obtained with bone single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT), which were useful to evaluate the response to bisphosphonate treatment. The quantitative parameters determined with those findings were decreased, with the maximum standardized uptake value (SUV), peak SUV, mean SUV, metabolic bone volume, and total bone uptake in case 1 and case 2 reduced by 48.8 and 60.3%, 46.6 and 58.8%, 24.3 and 60.5%, 87.0 and 11.8%, and 90.2

Paget's disease of bone (PDB) is a common chronic bone disorder. In the French-Canadian population, the p.Pro392Leu mutation within the SQSTM1 gene is involved in 46% of familial forms. In New Zealand, the emergence of PDB in offspring inheriting SQSTM1 mutations was reported to be delayed by a decade compared to their parents. We aimed at assessing the clinical phenotype of offspring carriers of this mutation in our French-Canadian cohort. We reviewed research records from adult offspring carriers of this mutation aged <90 years and their affected parents. In parents, we collected data on sex

Imaging studies of the brain, head and neck, sinuses, and dental computed tomography are among the most frequently performed procedures in radiologic departments. Systematic evaluation in the bone window may reveal common and uncommon sclerotic osseous abnormalities of the craniofacial skeleton. Most of these findings are incidental and unrelated to the initial clinical indications. Sporadically symptoms may arise due to lesional mass effect with compression on adjacent structures and neuroforaminal encroachment, resulting in proptosis, vision, or hearing loss. Other symptoms include craniofaci

Radiopaque lesions and lesions of mixed density are less frequent than radiolucent lesions of the jawbones. They comprise a spectrum of odontogenic and non-odontogenic lesions. The latter group includes inherited and developmental disorders, osteomyelitis, and benign and malignant primary bone tumors and metastases. Most odontogenic radiopaque or mixed lesions are either related to the apex or more rarely to the crown of the tooth, although there are exceptions to this rule. Some lesions, such as a torus mandibularis and torus palatinus, have a characteristic location, whereas others show no r

Calcitonin was discovered over 50 yr ago as a new hormone that rapidly lowers circulating calcium levels. This effect is caused by the inhibition of calcium efflux from bone, as calcitonin is a potent inhibitor of bone resorption. Calcitonin has been in clinical use for conditions of accelerated bone turnover, including Paget's disease and osteoporosis; although in recent years, with the development of drugs that are more potent inhibitors of bone resorption, its use has declined. A number of peptides that are structurally similar to calcitonin form the calcitonin family, which currently inclu

Giant cell reparative granulomas (GCRGs) are non-neoplastic inflammatory lesions, usually observed in the maxilla, mandible or small bones of the hands and feet. These lesions present a wide range of morphology and the misinterpretation with other giant cell lesions can often occur. We report the case of a 47-year-old woman with GCRG in the left scapula, presenting some uncommon features: the location (scapula) and age at presentation, the lack of underlying bone disease such as Paget's disease or fibrous dysplasia, the large aggressive expansile aspect of the lesion. This was a therapeutic st

Juvenile Paget's disease (JPD) is a rare recessively-inherited bone dysplasia. The great majority of cases described to date have had homozygous mutations in TNFRSF11B, the gene encoding osteoprotegerin. We describe a boy who presented with recurrent clavicular fractures following minor trauma (8 fractures from age 2 to 11). He was of normal height and despite mild lateral bowing of the thighs and anterior bowing of the shins he remained physically active. Abnormal modelling was noted in ribs and humeri on clavicular radiographs, and a skeletal survey at the age of 7 showed generalised diaphys

Paget's disease is a progressive focal bone condition which can result in pain, low quality of life, deformity and other complications. Disease progression can be halted with potent bisphosphonates, resulting in improvement in both quality of life and pain, and normalisation of scintigraphy, plain radiographs and bone histology. Zoledronate has transformed the treatment of Paget's disease, producing sustained remissions in almost all patients. Thus, it is now possible to normalise bone cell activity and prevent disease progression at low cost, with one or two intravenous injections of zoledron

Paget's disease of bone is characterised by overactive osteoclasts that resorb bone at a higher rate than normal. Osteoblasts attempt to repair the damage by laying down new bone which in turn is resorbed leaving a chaotic pattern of lytic and dense sclerotic bone behind. Deformed bone enlarges, becomes vascularised, bends and fractures. No bone is exempt but the skull, pelvis, vertebrae and long bones are commonly affected. Pressure from pagetic bone impinges on the auditory, facial, optic, trigeminal nerves and the spinal cord, risking paraplegia or quadriplegia. Vascular complications inclu

Incidental findings on PET CT studies are common. The distribution of Ga-DOTATATE is dependent on cell surface expression of somatostatin receptors, which may be pathologic or physiologic. Osteoporosis circumscripta is the early lytic phase of Paget disease associated with well-defined osteopenia, most commonly seen within the skull on imaging. The appearance has been well demonstrated on Tc HDP/MDP bone scans. Here, we present the case of a 76-year-old man with a small bowel carcinoid tumor who underwent staging imaging with Ga-DOTATATE PET CT with the incidental finding of osteoporosis circu

The balance between bone formation and bone resorption is closely related to bone homeostasis. Osteoclasts, originating from the monocyte/macrophage lineage, are the only cell type possessing bone resorption ability. Osteoclast overactivity is thought to be the major reason underlying osteoclast-related osteolytic problems, such as Paget's disease, aseptic loosening of prostheses and inflammatory osteolysis; therefore, disruption of osteoclastogenesis is considered a crucial treatment option for these issues. WKYMVm, a synthetic peptide, which is a potent FPR2 agonist, exerts an immunoregulato

OBJECTIVE: Paget's disease of the bone (PDB) is a focal bone disorder characterized by excessive resorption and deposition of pathologic bone. It can involve the skull and cause neurologic dysfunction. Hydrocephalus occurring as a complication has also been reported. However, owing to its rarity, the optimal treatment has not yet been determined.
METHODS: We report the case of a 60-year-old woman with a diagnosis of PDB who had presented with symptomatic hydrocephalus and was successfully treated with ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion. We also performed a systematic review of the Scopus an

INTRODUCTION: Paget's disease (PD) is the most common metabolic bone disorder after osteoporosis. Clinically, it can result in pain, bony deformity, pathologic fractures, and, in the late stage, progression to malignancy. At a pathophysiological level, PD manifests as an imbalance between the homeostasis of bone destruction and formation. Bones most often involved with this disease process include the pelvis, femur, tibia, vertebra, and skull. The goals of orthopedic intervention in PD are two-fold: Prevention of pathologic fracture with internal stabilization and reconstruction following frac
