A syndrome of multiple anomalies associated with growth failure and delayed development is described. The facies appear distinctive with globular head, prominence of the eyes, hypertelorism, cleft palate, micrognathia, and abnormal pinnae. Other features include vertebral and costal anomalies, cardiac defects, and a peculiar malformation of the hands. At least five other cases of this condition, all occurring in males, may be found in medical reports. The finding of incomplete expression in three maternal relatives of our patient provides evidence for a genetic cause.

Eight boys aged 9.5 to 17 years, on regular hemodialysis for chronic renal failure, were treated for 0.4 to 1.3 years with the anabolic steroid oxandrolone. The effects of thymectomy (TMX) at 1 or 5 days of age on the subsequent growth of bone have been determined in male and female Holtzman rats. The rats were maintained under aseptic conditions to minimize any effects of infection or wasting disease on bone growth. Avascular necrosis of the hip was evaluated in two groups of patients. On group had sustained the insult to the epiphysis in infancy and had a mean growth loss in the proximal end of the femur of 21.5 millimeters at a mean age of 11.7 years. The other group had sustained the insult in mid-childhood (due to Legg-Perthes disease) and had a mean growth loss of seven millimeters at 12.4 years. Based on this evaluation, we concluded that trochanteric epiphyseodesis was nary in the latter group.

A retrospective study involving 276 patients with 319 congenitally dislocated hips was undertaken to assess whether premanipulation fraction prevents avascular necrosis. Roentgenographic criteria were utilized and only cases of frank dislocation unassociated with other disorders were included. It was found that in a child less than one year old, premanipulation traction of twenty-one days or more substantially reduces the incidence of avascular necrosis. For the child more than a year old, however, the prognosis is not as good, even if premanipulation traction is prescribed for twenty-one days

Wildcaught cinnamon ringtail monkeys, Cebus albifrons, were fed diets with Ca:P ratios of 1:4 1:2.1 1:0,4, and 1:0.5 for 3 to 88 months. Monkeys fed the diet with Ca:P ratios of 1:4 and 1:21 C ratios similar to that of human diets) had minor microscopic changes suggestive of osteoporosis when compared to other species of animals. The changes were not detected by conventional or magnification radiography or by 125I photon absorptiometry. These findings are in in striking contrast to studies in other animals where similar diets resulted in significant bone resorption within 6 weeks to 6 months.

The development of teeth, salivary glands, and other oral tissues can be seriously compromised by a deficiency of a number of essential nutrients. Because nutritional stress during critical development periods may decrease the ultimate resistance of the oral tissues to challenge, the prevention of disease and maintenance of oral health are intimately dependent on the nutrient supply during development. Appropriate dietary counseling, particularly with reference to critical developmental times and intake of essential nutrients, can insure optimal oral tissue development.
