Congenital deformities about the knee are the result of abnormalities of all the anatomical structures that make up this joint. In some cases the structural changes observed are due to primary disorders of formation and growth of one or more of the anatomical components of the knee. Disorders are known to occur in the integumentary, muscular, ligamentous supporting, and skeletal systems. Examples of these disorders are seen in the bone dysplasias and joint laxity syndromes. An attempt to produce scoliosis in young baboons by excision of the heads of ribs failed in thirteen growing animals observed for up to a year after operation. Other investigators have failed to produce scoliosis in primates by similar and other techniques that had successfully produced scoliosis in quadruped animals. The possible reasons for this are discussed, especially in the light of clinical trials that are being carried out with techniques transposed from the quadruped experimental animal to the scoliosis clinic.

Surgical access to the cranial, orbital, and facial areas, as developed by Tessier, has produced not only definitive repair of previously uncorrectable congenital deformities such as orbital hypertelorism and facial stenosis (e.g., Crouzon's, Apert's syndromes) but also has improved markedly the treatment of traumatic and neoplastic defects. Somatomedin is a polypeptide(s) which "mediates" the actions of growth hormone.
