Bone health in patients with cancer: a SEOM-SEIOMM consensus review of risk factors, assessment strategies, and management approaches.

Anticancer therapies frequently compromise skeletal health and increase fracture risk. This narrative review synthesizes information and provides guidance on assessment, prevention, and management of therapy-related bone loss in adults with cancer. Major contributors to bone loss in this population include aromatase inhibitors, androgen deprivation therapy, systemic glucocorticoids, chemotherapy, and selected targeted or immune agents. Recommended assessments include clinical evaluation, laboratory tests (calcium, vitamin D, and renal function), and bone mineral density by dual-energy X-ray ab

Comparison of Mortality and Complications After Total Hip Arthroplasty in Patients with Sickle Cell Disease: A Retrospective Match-Controlled Study from Türkiye.

OBJECTIVE: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a well-recognized cause of osteonecrosis of the femoral head, and total hip arthroplasty (THA) in these patients is associated with higher complication rates. Because SCD is rare in the general population, large-scale studies are limited. This study aimed to evaluate complications and mortality after THA in patients with SCD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the national e-health database of Türkiye (e-Nabız) were used to identify 138 patients with SCD who underwent primary THA between 2016 and 2022. These patients were matched by age, sex, and Charlson

Orbital Emphysema From Chronic Intranasal Cocaine Use.

BACKGROUND: Chronic intranasal cocaine use can cause destruction of sinonasal osteocartilaginous structures. Communication between the paranasal sinuses and the orbit may result in orbital emphysema. CASE REPORT: A 47-year old man with a history of chronic intranasal cocaine use presented to the emergency department with two months of recurrent episodes of right eye proptosis exacerbated by nose blowing. Maxillofacial computed tomography revealed a large amount of right orbital emphysema, with obvious destruction of the lateral border of the right ethmoid sinus. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSIC

Treatment patterns of bone-targeted agents for the prevention of skeletal-related events in multiple myeloma in Bulgaria: a cross-sectional chart review study.

BACKGROUND: Bone disease (MBD) is common in patients with multiple myeloma (MM) and ~80% are already affected at diagnosis. MBD increases the risk of skeletal-related events (SREs) and the use of bone-targeted agents (BTAs) is recommended for their prevention and treatment. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed electronic health records of adults with MBD treated in real-world practice in any of eight hematology clinics in Bulgaria. The study assessed patients' demographics and clinical characteristics, BTA treatment patterns and pain management, and estimated the incidence of SREs and

Management of severe bone loss in patients at risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw with microsurgery and guided bone regeneration: A case study.

BACKGROUND: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a challenging complication associated with antiresorptive medications. Its exact pathophysiology remains unclear, but dental extractions and infections are known triggers, complicating prevention, and treatment. While conservative approaches aim to minimize bone exposure, they may be inadequate in severe cases. When surgery is required, results can be unpredictable, potentially complicating rehabilitation and patient satisfaction. This case study explores the potential role of microsurgical techniques and regenerative procedure

Treatment of Isolated Capitate Nonunion With Osteonecrosis Using a Capsular-Based Vascularized Bone Graft: A Case Report.

CASE: Isolated capitate fracture nonunion is an uncommon injury that rarely demonstrates concurrent osteonecrosis. The literature to help guide treatment is sparse. We present a 24-year-old woman who developed a nonunion through the capitate waist with concurrent osteonecrosis 15 months after injury. This complication was treated with internal fixation and a capsular-based distal radius vascularized bone graft (VBG) from the fourth extensor compartment artery pedicle. The patient achieved radiographic union by 15 weeks and had near complete recovery of motion and strength at the final follow-u

The Impact of Radiomics Image Analysis on Adult Hip Pathologies: A Scoping Review.

Radiomics promises quantitative biomarkers extracted from routine hip imaging to support diagnosis, prognosis, and surgical planning, but current evidence is fragmented across pathologies, modalities, and computational pipelines. We conducted a scoping review following PRISMA-ScR and the Population-Concept-Context framework, including peer-reviewed original studies on adults (≥18 years) that applied radiomics or deep-radiomics to hip imaging (X-ray, CT, MRI, DEXA) with clinically relevant outcomes. PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase and Scopus (Elsevier) were searched from 1 January 2021 to 30 August 20

Tooth-Supported O-Ball Retained Maxillary Overdenture in a Patient Contraindicated for Dental Implants Due to Bisphosphonate Therapy.

Tooth-supported overdentures offer an effective and conservative option for patients with partial edentulism and systemic contraindications to implant therapy. Retaining natural roots under the denture base helps preserve alveolar bone, enhances proprioception, and improves prosthesis stability. This case report describes the rehabilitation of a 76-year-old man with osteoporosis on long-term bisphosphonate therapy, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. Due to the high risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), implant placement was contraindicated. A maxillary overdenture retain

A Novel Multisite Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Approach for Chronic Hip Pain in Avascular Necrosis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a progressive disease, commonly leading to joint collapse and severe pain. Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) to the lumbar plexus and articular nerves innervating the hip can be a viable option for treatment of hip pain in patients who are not eligible for surgery. CASE REPORT: A patient with AVN-induced hip pain received bilateral lumbar plexus PNS at the level of L2, resulting in a > 90% relief of bilateral posterolateral aspects of the hip and 50% to 60% reduction in overall hip pain, respectively, at his 2-week follow-up. He subsequently underwent

Analysis of the efficacy of autologous adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction and calcium phosphate bone cement combined with core decompression in patients with femoral head necrosis: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a progressive disorder characterized by impaired perfusion, inflammation, neural dysregulation, and structural failure of the femoral head. While core decompression (CD) is commonly used for joint preservation, its effectiveness remains limited, particularly in the absence of adequate structural support and biological modulation. Adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) has emerged as a potential biological adjunct due to its angiogenic, immunomodulatory, and regenerative properties. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcom

Risk factors for allogeneic transfusion in young adults undergoing simultaneous bilateral direct anterior total hip arthroplasty within an ERAS framework.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous bilateral total hip arthroplasty (SBTHA) under enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) can reduce bleeding, yet transfusion remains a limiting factor in young Indian patients with osteonecrosis of femoral head (ONFH), who frequently present with low baseline hemoglobin (Hb). Cohort-specific, actionable thresholds are underreported. Hence, we aimed to quantify transfusion incidence and identify predictors of allogeneic transfusion in young ONFH patients undergoing SBTHA via the direct anterior approach (DAA) within a uniform ERAS protocol.
