BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a disorder of the proximal femoral physis occurring in late childhood and adolescence. Previously postulated risk factors include obesity and endocrinopathies. The purpose of this investigation was to identify risk factors for developing SCFE, as well as postslip osteonecrosis (ON), among the United States pediatric population.
METHODS: A national database investigation was performed using PearlDiver Technologies, Inc., queried for SCFE and ON using International Classification of Disease codes (2010 to 2020). Regression analyses to dete

Stable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a pediatric hip disorder managed with in situ fixation of the proximal femoral epiphysis, otherwise known as 'pinning the hip'. The objective of this study was to characterize how the choice of implant for in situ fixation of stable SCFE has changed over time. A systematic review of publications concerning in situ fixation of stable SCFE from January 1993 to November 2021 was conducted. The change in the type, diameter, and number of implants used in publications over time and the age of their respective patient cohorts was evaluated. A total

Orthopedic plates are commonly used after osteotomies for temporary fixation of bones. Patient-specific plates have recently emerged as a promising fixation device. However, it is unclear how various strategies used for the design of such plates perform in comparison with each other. Here, we compare the biomechanical performance of 3D printed patient-specific bone plates designed using conventional computer-aided design (CAD) techniques with those designed with the help of topology optimization (TO) algorithms, focusing on cases involving slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). We establish

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether diagnostic assessment methods used on radiographs in humans with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) can be used in cats.
METHODS: The ventrodorsal (VD) extended-leg and VD frog-leg pelvic radiographs of 20 cats with SCFE without fully displaced femoral capital epiphyses (FCE), eight cats with fully displaced FCE and five control cats with normal pelvic anatomy were assessed by five observers on two separate occasions 3 months apart. The Klein's line and modified Klein's line were assessed on each VD extended-leg radiogr

INTRODUCTION: The treatment concept for slipped capital femoral epiphysis is still controversial. According to studies, there is currently no recommendation for a universal approach. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the care reality of children with ECF in Germany.
METHODS: The evaluation of the study is performed based on a questionnaire sent to physicians tending to ECF in 2021. Data is compared to the literature.
RESULTS: 36 of 47 questionnaires sent out were included. Overall, no significant difference in ECF care was proven in terms of annual caseload or the size of hospit

AIMS: We aimed to assess the cumulative risk of total hip arthroplasty (THA) from in situ fixation for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) after a follow-up of almost 50 years.
METHODS: In this study, 138 patients with 172 affected hips treated with in situ fixation were evaluated retrospectively. A total of 97 patients (70%) were male and the mean age was 13.6 years (SD 2.1); 35 patients (25%) had a bilateral disease. The median follow-up time was 49 years (interquartile range 43 to 55). Basic demographic, stability, and surgical details were obtained from patient records. Preoperative

BACKGROUND: Endocrinopathy is a risk factor for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). We aimed to determine (1) the incidence of endocrinopathy-associated SCFE compared with that of non-endocrinopathy-associated SCFE, (2) whether the incidence of SCFE increases with the number of deficient hormones, and (3) the clinical characteristics of endocrinopathy-associated SCFE.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study using a nationwide database in South Korea. All new diagnoses of endocrinopathy or SCFE between 2002 and 2019 in children born between 2002 and 2005 were identified. Th

OBJECTIVE: In situ fixation for treatment of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) can stabilize the epiphysis and prevent further joint deformation but often leaves residual deformity that may adversely affect intra-articular contact mechanics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between residual deformity and contact mechanics in the post-SCFE hip.
METHODS: Patient-specific hip models were created for 19 patients with SCFE treated with in situ fixation. For each model, discrete element analysis was used to compute cumulative acetabular and femoral contact stress

We aimed to investigate the national trends in the incidence and management of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) and to report the need for reoperations. We included all <19-year-old patients hospitalised for SCFE in 2004-2014 in mainland Finland (n=159). Data from the Finnish Care Register for Health Care, Statistics Finland, and Turku University Hospital patient charts were analyse for the incidence of SCFE in 2004-2012, the length of stay, and the type of surgery with respect to age, gender, study year, and season. The reoperations and rehospitalisations in 2004-2014 for SCFE were an

INTRODUCTION: In situ fixation is the gold standard for mild and moderate slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) cases. The condition is associated with a low percentage of avascular necrosis and chondrolysis.[1] The present study examines the postoperative femoral neck remodelling and implant elongation in cases of therapeutic and prophylactic in situ fixation using the free-gliding screw system.
AIM: The aim of our study was to assess the postoperative femoral neck growth and evaluate the biomechanical evolution and complication's rate for 19 therapeutic and 11 prophylactic in situ fixati

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the perioperative management of Pediculus capitis (lice) infestations, including risk of contamination to the sterile field, whether to delay surgery, and optimal time to treat and/or operate.
CASE REPORT: Two identical twin patients presented for elective in situ percutaneous pinning of chronic slipped capital femoral epiphyses. Active pediculosis capitis was noted intraoperatively by the anesthesia team during the first patient's surgery. Meticulous examination of the sterile field at that time demonstrated no organisms or other sources of contamination.

Recent research has revealed the importance of the femoral epiphyseal tubercle and cupping height in the stability of the physis and its association with capital femoral slippage. To better understand the connection between the pathogenesis of slipped capital femoral epiphysis and obesity, we performed a retrospective analysis of proximal femur and acetabular anatomies using computed tomography (CT) scans in the hips of normal weight and obese pediatric patients. We measured morphologic characteristics of the proximal femur and acetabulum in developing hips of 31 obese adolescent patients and

Hip disorders are a wide range of conditions commonly affecting patients in the pediatric age group. Reaching an accurate diagnosis of these conditions in children may be challenging. The optimal use of image modalities in the approach of a child with possible hip pathology is essential, which allows radiologists and clinicians to narrow the differential diagnosis and reach a definitive diagnosis, which can consequently result in early and appropriate interventions leading to improved outcomes. Therefore, this article aims to provide practicing radiologists and clinicians with up-to-date and e

Given the long-term complications of undiagnosed slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) and the importance of readable health information materials on positive, equitable health outcomes, the objective of this study was to determine if the online patient education materials regarding SCFE are written at or below accepted recommendations. The secondary objective was to determine whether the readability of these materials varied when stratified by the type of website. 'Slipped capital femoral epiphysis', 'SCFE', and 'slipped femoral head' were used as search queries in three common search engi

CASE: Bilateral valgus slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a rare condition with few cases reported in the literature. However, there are no reports of bilateral unstable valgus SCFE. We report a unique case of bilateral acute-on-chronic unstable valgus SCFE with severe coxa valga in a 9-year-old girl. She was treated with bilateral capital realignment procedure along with subtrochanteric osteotomy and had a good clinical outcome.
CONCLUSION: We hitherto report a rare case of bilateral unstable valgus SCFE which was successfully managed. This report also highlights the importance of t

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the usefulness of bone single-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) of the hip in predicting the later occurrence of avascular necrosis (AVN) after slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) or femoral neck fracture in pediatric patients. The quantitative parameters of SPECT/CT useful in predicting AVN were identified.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one (male:female, 10:11) consecutive patients aged < 18 years (mean age ± standard deviation [SD], 11.0 ± 2.7 years) who underwent surgery for SCFE or femoral neck fracture and postoper

The study evaluated femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) in the unpinned contralateral hip in patients with unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) and verified initial age, posterior sloping angle (PSA) and center-edge angle (CEA) as predictors of FAI in the contralateral hip. 152 patients with unilateral SCFE with a mean index age of 13.2 years (8.2-17.2 years) were enrolled retrospectively into the study. Mean follow-up was 8 years (3-14 years). PSA and CEA were measured on initial radiographs of the unaffected hip. Alpha-angle and CEA were measured on radiographs taken at the las
