Osteochondrosis in the feline stifle: a case series and literature review.

Case series summaryInformation is presented on six new cats with stifle osteochondrosis (OC). In the veterinary literature, there are only four single case reports on cats with this condition. Combining the six new cases with the four previously published cases, we have summarised the current knowledge on stifle OC in the cat. Overall, among the 10 cats, the condition was bilateral in three cats and unilateral in seven. The mean age at presentation was 10.5 months (median 7). Seven cats were male, of which six were castrated, and the three female cats were spayed. Of the cats, five were domest

Moderate to Severe Short Stature and Joint Involvement in Individuals With ACAN Deletions.

OBJECTIVE: In recent years, numerous heterozygous ACAN variants have been identified in individuals with short stature. The phenotypic spectrum includes mild to moderate short stature, advanced to delayed bone age, mild dysmorphic features, brachydactyly and/or other mild skeletal defects and joint pathology in early adulthood which often requires surgery. However, only one multiexonic ACAN deletion has been reported to date, in a family with short stature, advanced bone age in childhood and early osteoarthritis and spine deformity in the father. Here, we describe 15 individuals from 6 familie

Comparing telomere lengths in chondrocytes from intact cartilage and those isolated from loose bodies.

INTRODUCTION: Given the intrinsic connection between telomeres, cell replication, and aging, telomere length serves as a valuable biomarker for evaluating cell quality and viability. Studying telomeres can offer vital insights into the suitability of cells within articular loose bodies for autologous chondrocyte implantation in treating chondral lesions. The aim of this study was to assess cell quality by analyzing telomere profiles in isolated cells from loose bodies. METHODS: Chondrocytes from loose bodies and intact cartilage from 3 patients with osteochondritis dissecans who underwent a H

Adolescents with Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Femoral Condyle Present with High Rates of Corresponding Coronal Malalignment.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis dissecans of the knee (KOCD) may be a source of pain in active, skeletally immature patients. An association between the condylar lesion location and lower-extremity coronal plane malalignment has been established, but clinical implications have been poorly understood. This study aimed to confirm the high rate of malalignment in KOCD and variation in demographic characteristics, presentation features, and disease severity between those with and without malalignment. METHODS: Prospectively collected clinical, demographic, and radiographic data were obtained, and sta

Successful treatment of pediatric osteochondritis dissecans of the knee using a wrist arthroscope: A case report with long term follow-up.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is a rare joint disorder that affects the subchondral bone and surrounding articular cartilage, resulting in localized necrosis and possible detachment of both bone and cartilage pieces. It primarily manifests in the knee joints of juvenile and teenage patients, and is frequently associated with recurring joint stress. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old child presented with a three-month history of left knee pain, exacerbated by movement, which resulted in a limp. Clinical examination revealed knee edema, limited range of motion, and

The effect of wrist flexion/extension on radiocapitellar joint kinematics during valgus extension of the elbow.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the capitellum is prevalent among youth baseball pitchers. Repetitive shear forces during pitching are contributing factors. During the acceleration phase of pitching, the wrist joint moves from extension to flexion. The interplay between wrist position and elbow joint biomechanics has not been thoroughly examined, particularly within the radiocapitellar joint. This study aims to elucidate how different wrist positions affect the displacement of compression forces within the radiocapitellar joint during elbow extension and examine the change in co

Subchondral bone density changes of the talus in dogs with tarsocrural osteochondrosis.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) and osteochondrosis (OC) are multifactorial developmental joint diseases that can occur in various anatomical locations, including the tarsus of immature, rapidly growing large breed dogs. The pathogenesis of canine OCD and OC involves a disruption in endochondral ossification, resulting in a failure of matrix calcification and vascular invasion. This study aimed to investigate the subchondral bone density changes in Labrador Retrievers with tarsocrural OCD/ OC. RESULTS: A total of 8 dogs with unilateral tarsocrural OCD/ OC were included in the stud

Wait or Drill? Shared Decision-making in Adolescents With Stable Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Knee.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of stable juvenile osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the knee in adolescents is controversial. Traditionally, initial management has been nonoperative. However, early subchondral drilling is also a consideration to potentially reduce the recovery time because ∼50% of stable OCD lesions eventually require surgery after a period of failed nonoperative care. This study uses choice-based conjoint (CBC) analysis to explore patient and family preferences regarding initial nonoperative treatment versus early drilling. METHODS: This study used a CBC survey using Sawtooth Soft

Medial Malleolar Fracture Risk by Supination Adduction After Arthroscopic Transmalleolar Portal Drilling: A Cadaveric Biomechanical Study.

BACKGROUND: The medial transmalleolar portal (mTMP) can be used to access osteochondritis dissecans lesions of the medial talar dome. The purpose of this study was to determine if, for supination adduction injury mechanism, drilling an mTMP increases fracture risk about the medial malleolus when compared to intact ankles, utilizing a cadaveric model. METHODS: Twenty-four matched ankles were cut midtibia and dissected down to the bone, sparing the tibiotalar joint capsule. The specimens were divided into 2 groups: intact control ankles and ankles with a 6-mm mTMP created by a senior orthopaedi

Osteochondritis dissecans in children: location-dependent differences (part II: ankle and elbow).

The classic terminology "osteochondritis dissecans (OCD)" describes a pathologic alteration, centered at the osteochondral junction, involving the subchondral bone and/or its cartilaginous precursor, with risk for lesion instability and disruption of adjacent articular cartilage. Among children and young adults, these sites of osteochondrosis can be a cause of chronic joint pain and are most often found within the knee, the ankle, and the elbow joints. While Part I of this review series focused on shared key definitions, pathophysiologic principles, and imaging considerations, as well as uniqu

Comprehensive Elbow Joint Morphology Changes in Surgically Treated Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Capitellum: Clinical Implications.

BACKGROUND: Capitellar osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) frequently results in radial head enlargement. However, due to the elbow joint's complex anatomy, deformities likely extend beyond just the radial head. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: It was hypothesized that in patients with OCD treated with surgery, imbalances in bone morphology during growth would affect the entire joint, leading to postoperative clinical symptoms. The purpose of this study was to test this hypothesis through a 3-dimensional evaluation of morphological changes. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS:
