BACKGROUND: Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by recurrent inflammation and progressive damage to cartilage. Respiratory involvement, which has a relatively high misdiagnosis rate, is the leading cause of death in RP patients, and its underlying pathogenesis remains largely unknown.
METHODS: Seventy-seven RP patients with respiratory involvement were enrolled in this study. The clinical characteristics, including imaging features, bronchoscopic findings, and treatment, were systematically analyzed. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to classify patient

AIMS: To analyze the clinical characteristics and identify factors associated with cardiovascular involvement in patients with relapsing polychondritis (RP).
METHODS: A total of 105 RP patients were enrolled and divided into cardiac and non-cardiac groups. Demographic, clinical, and serological data were collected and analyzed comparatively. Univariate and Firth's logistic regression analyses were performed to identify independent factors associated with cardiac involvement. Hierarchical clustering was applied to explore phenotypic patterns.
RESULTS: Among the RP cohort, 29.5% (31/105) exhib

A 59-year-old man presented with sore throat and cough, and chest computed tomography and bronchoscopy revealed airway stenosis. Four McAdam's criteria supported the diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis. High-dose prednisolone and cyclophosphamide improved symptoms and airway lesions, highlighting the importance of early recognition and serial airway evaluation.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare chronic autoimmune inflammation of the cartilage associated with life-threatening respiratory complications. Currently, no clear role of imaging modalities such as 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/computed tomography (CT) is defined in the literature. This systematic review and meta-analysis provide current evidence on the PET-positivity rate and utility in relapsing polychondritis. Prospective or retrospective studies with more than five patients of suspected relapsing polychondritis who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT during their management and reported a PET-pos

BACKGROUND: Retinal vessel caliber is strongly associated with systemic blood pressure (BP); however, the causal relationship between retinal vascular caliber and BP remains unclear. Understanding this relationship is essential for advancing predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM) approaches to effectively manage hypertension and its related complications.
WORKING HYPOTHESIS: Microvessel morphology is causally related to blood pressure. By integrating genome-wide association studies, Mendelian randomization analysis, transcriptomic data, and multivariate genomic approaches, t

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare immune-mediated inflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent inflammation of cartilaginous structures. Although RP frequently coexists with other autoimmune disorders, its association with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly Crohn's disease, has been rarely described. We report the case of a 53-year-old man who presented with bilateral auricular inflammation sparing the earlobes and was diagnosed with RP based on clinical and histopathological findings. During treatment with systemic corticosteroids and methotrexate, he developed severe ab

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare autoimmune disease of cartilaginous structures, often diagnosed late due to nonspecific presentations. Both RP and granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) can cause diffuse tracheobronchial wall thickening on computed tomography (CT) and may be seronegative for anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA), creating a diagnostic impasse. We report a 46-year-old man with two months of fever, productive cough, and sternal pain. A saddle nose deformity was the only cartilaginous sign; serum ANCA was repeatedly negative. Neck CT showed diffuse tracheal and bila

BACKGROUND: Intrathyroidal ectopic thymus (IET), a benign lesion due to aberrant thymic migration during embryogenesis, is often discovered incidentally. We aimed to present the ultrasound (US) features, diagnostic methods, and follow-up of IET in children and adolescents.
METHODS: We searched our database of patients with a nodular thyroid lesion detected by US, between January 2007 and December 2019. In 30/255 (11.7%), IET was diagnosed.
RESULTS: The study included 30 patients (20 males/10 females), mean age 5 years (0.1-12.2, median 5.6) with 34 lesions diagnosed by US as `incidentalomas.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare immune-mediated inflammatory disorder characterized by the recurrent inflammation of cartilaginous structures, particularly the auricular, nasal, and respiratory tract cartilage. Airway involvement represents one of the most severe and potentially life-threatening complications. Approximately one-third of relapsing polychondritis cases are associated with other systemic autoimmune diseases. We report the case of a 50-year-old man presenting with inspiratory dyspnea, progressive dysphonia, bilateral auricular and nasal chondritis, inflammatory polyarthralgia,

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) and VEXAS syndrome (Vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, Autoinflammatory, Somatic) are two clinically overlapping conditions in which neurological complications remain uncommon. Based on the existing literature, neurological involvement in RP most frequently comprises meningitis, encephalitis, cranial nerve palsies, and stroke, whereas VEXAS is additionally characterized by peripheral nerve and muscle involvement. This scoping review summarizes the neurological manifestations associated with RP and VEXAS and highlights the current gaps in knowledge regarding these comp

BACKGROUND: Abatacept (ABA) and belatacept (BEL) are immunomodulatory fusion proteins in which the extracellular domain of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4) is linked to the Fc fragment of human IgG1. Functionally, they bind to cell surface antigens CD80 and CD86 on antigen-presenting cells, thereby preventing CD28-mediated costimulatory signaling. This systematic review aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy of ABA and BEL in immune-mediated diseases, focusing on indications currently not approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the European Medic

Connective tissue diseases comprise a spectrum of autoimmune disorders characterized by chronic inflammation and immune-mediated injury affecting the skin, vasculature, cartilage, and internal organs. The external ear, owing to its unique composition of elastic cartilage, thin dermis, and end-arterial vasculature, represents a visible and diagnostically informative site of connective tissue disease involvement. Auricular lesions may manifest as erythematous chondritis, purpura, necrosis, nodules, or sclerotic plaques, often providing dermatologists with early clinical clues to systemic disease

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures are common injuries in young and active individuals and can lead to long-term functional impairment and early onset osteoarthritis. While ACL reconstruction remains the standard of care, recent evidence suggests that spontaneous healing may be possible in selected cases. Regenerative and biologic treatment concepts have therefore gained increasing interest. This study investigates the clinical and radiological outcomes of a stem cell-based regenerative treatment for traumatic ACL ruptures and presents findings as preliminary observational e

The prevalence of autoimmune diseases has been increasing globally. Many disorders have manifestations within the larynx and patients may present initially to the otolaryngologist with breathing, voice, or swallow concerns. This review focuses on the laryngotracheal manifestations of various autoimmune diseases and associated laryngoscopic abnormalities that commonly occur with autoimmune disease, including infraglottic stenosis, bamboo nodules, cricoarytenoid joint ankylosis, supraglottic stenosis, and multilevel airway stenosis. Commonly implicated autoimmune disorders including granulomatos

Chronic inflammatory skin disorders comprise frequent and rare dermatoses. The etiology of these diseases is broad and ranges from genetic factors to environmental and lifestyle issues. In this review, we focus on afflictions of the auricle by the eczema group, psoriasis, and pityriasis rubra pilaris, autoimmune disorders like relapsing polychondritis and cutaneous lupus erythematosus, and juvenile spring dermatosis. The anatomy of this particular region can alter the clinical presentation, course, and treatment options for these skin disorders. Atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and ps

Orbital inflammation is the most common presentation of VEXAS, with any orbital structure potentially affected. Non-sight-threatening and uncomplicated anterior non-granulomatous uveitis and anterior diffuse scleritis follow in frequency, along with episcleritis. Ophthalmic involvement was significantly associated with relapsing polychondritis (p = 0.014), with an increased chance of a fatal outcome (RR 5.87, p = 0.016) and independently predicts a higher mortality rate (OR 3.72, p = 0.026). Treatment of ophthalmic involvement showed full or partial response to glucocorticosteroids alone in 66

Background/Objectives: VEXAS (Vacuoles, E1-Enzyme, X-linked, Autoinflammatory, and Somatic) syndrome is a recently described adult-onset autoinflammatory disorder. It is characterized by somatic mutations in the UBA1 gene, systemic inflammation, macrocytic anemia, cytopenias, and bone marrow vacuolization and frequently overlaps with Sweet's syndrome, relapsing polychondritis, and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Because treatment options are evolving, we reviewed the current and latest evidence of clinical features and therapeutic methods. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conduct

VEXAS (vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic) syndrome is a UBA1-driven hemato-inflammatory disorder that mimics relapsing polychondritis, vasculitis, and myelodysplastic syndromes, often causing diagnostic delay. We describe a case presenting with relapsing polychondritis-like features and summarize, through a focused literature review, its diagnostic pathway and therapeutic implications. A 74-year-old man presented with three weeks of fever, auricular and nasal chondritis, iritis, and pulmonary infiltrates. Inflammatory markers were elevated with macrocytic anaemia. Antimi

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune associated vocal fold lesions (AaVFL) are a result of underlying autoimmune conditions that include laryngeal rheumatoid nodules, bamboo nodules, and other nonspecific disease lesions. Women being more prone to autoimmune disease are therefore more likely to develop these vocal fold lesions. This relationship showed a greater association in women in their 4th and 5th decades when treating these lesions. This greater association is theorized to be due to introduction of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) containing estrogen in their 4th and 5th decades of life. The proinfl
