Gut microbiota dysbiosis and the gut-lung axis: links to asthma and its common comorbidities.

INTRODUCTION: Almost from the beginning of the HIV epidemic in 1981, an association with tuberculosis (TB) was recognized. This association between HIV and TB co-infection has been particularly evident amongst prisoners. However, despite this, few studies of TB in prisons have stratified results by HIV status. Given the high prevalence of HIV-positive persons and TB-infected persons in prisons and the documented risk of TB in those infected with HIV, it is of interest to determine how co-infection varies amongst prison populations worldwide. For this reason we have undertaken a systematic revi

Lyell´s syndrome associated with the use of topical agents: case report.

UNLABELLED: Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG1 (PaeAG1) is a Costa Rican strain that was isolated in 2010 in a major Hospital. This strain has resistance to multiple antibiotics such as β-lactams (including carbapenems), aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones. PaeAG1 is considered critical (Priority 1) due to its resistance to carbapenems, and it was the first report of a P. aeruginosa isolate carrying both VIM-2 and IMP-18 genes encoding for metallo-β-lactamases (MBL) enzymes (both with carbapenemase activity). Owing to these traits, we have studied this model for 10 years using diverse approaches inc

Surgical treatment of pulmonary hydatidosis: six years of experience and results at the National Hospital Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen, Lima, Peru.

Liposomal amphotericin B (AmBisome) is a lipid-associated formulation of the broad-spectrum polyene antifungal agent amphotericin B. It is active against clinically relevant yeasts and moulds, including Candida spp., Aspergillus spp. and filamentous moulds such as Zygomycetes, and is approved for the treatment of invasive fungal infections in many countries worldwide. It was developed to improve the tolerability profile of amphotericin B deoxycholate, which was for many decades considered the gold standard of antifungal treatment, despite being associated with infusion-related events and nephr

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Periapical radiographs vs cone beam CT imaging for the evaluation of peri-implant bone defects: an ex vivo study.

BACKGROUND: Data on the radiographic interpretation of peri-implantitis is still controversial. Thus, our study aimed to: a) investigate the detectability rate of ex-vivo induced peri-implant bone defects (PBDs) between observers using two different imaging methods; Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and Periapical Radiographs (PAs), b) investigate the observers' agreement on their ability to detect PBDs according to their level of expertise and, c) determine the sensitivity and specificity of the imaging methods used to detect induced PBDs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two dried human mandibles w

Effects of low-frequency vibration training on walking ability and body composition among older adults: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: As life expectancy rises, age-related decline in mobility and physical function poses challenges for older adults. While traditional exercise can help, limitations and injury risks persist. This study explores low-frequency vibration training as a potential alternative to improve walking ability and body composition in older adults. METHODS: A lottery was used to randomly assign 50 participants (mean age 80.08 years) to either a vibration group (n = 25, 10 males, 15 females) or a control group (n = 25, 11 males, 14 females). While the control group continued their regular daily sc

Pediatric Red Ear Syndrome Misdiagnosed as Relapsing Polychondritis: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Red ear syndrome (RES) is a rare clinical entity presenting with paroxysmal erythema of one or both ears associated with a burning sensation or earache. The onset of symptoms could be either spontaneous or triggered by touch, stress, coughing, sneezing, neck movements, chewing, and combing hair. While most cases are usually described in adults, it can rarely present in children. This article reports a case of pediatric RES, first misdiagnosed as relapsing polychondritis. The patient's condition improved after introduction of ibuprofen, isoptin, and amitriptyline, with no new attacks reported a

Hiding in Plain Sight-Relapsing Polychondritis Disguised as Hip Arthritis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by episodic inflammation of cartilaginous tissues. Its diverse clinical manifestations frequently pose diagnostic challenges and lead to misdiagnosis. METHODS: We present a 59-year-old female initially diagnosed with refractory hip osteoarthritis based on persistent left hip pain unresponsive to conventional anti-inflammatory therapy. Subsequent development of stridor and dyspnea prompted comprehensive evaluation, including laryngotracheal imaging, autoimmune serology, and multidisciplinary consultation. Dia

IL-17 Inhibitor Secukinumab Achieves Remission in Relapsing Polychondritis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Relapsing polychondritis is a rare autoimmune disease of unknown etiology. There are no defined protocols for treatment, and its management depends on the physician's knowledge and empirical experience. Various reports often highlight the insufficient efficacy of conventional disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, and report controversial results associated with the use of different biologic agents. CASE REPORT The patient was a 32-year-old woman, previously diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. Four years after the initial diagnosis and following her second delivery, the patient

A Case of Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease with Bilateral Auricular Polychondritis Manifestations: A Rare Clinical Association.

BACKGROUND Undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD) is a heterogeneous autoimmune condition characterized by clinical features of connective tissue involvement without meeting the full classification criteria for a defined connective tissue disease (CTD). It often includes arthralgias, Raynaud's phenomenon, and serologic abnormalities. In rare cases, UCTD presents with features resembling relapsing polychondritis, raising questions about a possible overlap syndrome or a shared immunopathogenic mechanism. This case report describes an atypical presentation of UCTD with bilateral auricu

BACKGROUND: Due to the rarity of relapsing polychondritis (RP), we described the demographic, clinical, treatment, outcomes, and comorbidities of patients with RP from our tertiary service. Additionally, a literature review was conducted. METHODS: A total of 47 Brazilian patients with RP between 2000 and 2024 were analyzed. All patient data were collected from pre-parametrized and pre-standardized electronic medical records. A literature review using PubMed with "relapsing polychondritis" as the search term included 25 articles after applying the strict exclusion criteria. RESULTS: A total o

European Reference Network (ERN) ReCONNET methodology for the cross-cultural adaptation of instruments for research and care in the context of rare connective tissue diseases (CROSSADAPT).

The traditional process of intercultural adaptation, while suitable for one or a few target languages, is not optimal for developing instruments for rare connective tissue diseases (CTDs) in multiple languages simultaneously. The European Reference Network ReCONNET presents the protocol for a novel methodology for cross-cultural adaptation of instruments for research and care in the context of rare CTDs (ReCONNET-CROSSADAPT). It is initiated by the identification of 'key-terms' that are crucial for maintaining the original meaning of the source document. Each language group, led by a senior me

Acute Hemorrhagic Edema of Infancy: A Rare Cause of Bilateral Ear Erythema.

Acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy (AHEI) is a rare cutaneous leukocytoclastic small-vessel vasculitis presenting with purpuric skin plaques on the face, ears, and extremities, frequently associated with fever and edema. Although the condition usually self-resolves over one to three weeks, it can be mistaken for more serious conditions, leading to unnecessary procedures and treatments. This case involves a nine-month-old infant who developed bilateral ear erythema and edema two days after a viral illness and was hospitalized for clinical suspicion of relapsing polychondritis. Within a couple o
