BACKGROUND: Formation of bone cysts in the acetabulum or femoral head is common in symptomatic acetabular dysplasia, but the prevalence and significance of cysts in hips undergoing PAO is poorly understood. The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the prevalence of cysts in hips undergoing PAO, (2) to identify predictors of the presence of cysts, (3) to determine if the presence or location of cysts was associated with intra-articular damage and (4) to determine if the presence or location of cysts impacted early clinical outcomes after PAO.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective revie

Isolated patellar chondromalacia in patients with patella alta and no history of patellar subluxations or dislocations is associated with a supratrochlear rim at the entrance to the femoral trochlea. This technical note outlines an arthroscopic technique called supratrochlear rim resection, which proposes a line of treatment that addresses not only symptoms (patellar cartilage defect) but also a suspected biomechanical reason (supratrochlear rim). The proposed technique combines resection of the supratrochlear rim with a modification of autologous matrix-induced chondrogenesis cartilage recons

BACKGROUND: Because BMI can be adjusted, a greater BMI may be associated with poorer outcomes and an increased risk of surgical complications. Additionally, smoking is another factor that negatively affects the musculoskeletal system, triggering inflammatory processes that hinder healing, complications and lead to poor postoperative outcomes in orthopedic surgery. Although the role of smoking on meniscal tissue has not be fully understood yet, it should be taken into consideration as an important factor affecting the results of meniscus surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relati

This study proposes a hybrid analytical framework for detecting chondromalacia using vibroacoustic (VAG) signals from patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) and healthy controls (HCs). The methodology combines nonlinear signal decomposition, feature extraction, and deep learning classification. Raw VAG signals, recorded with a custom multi-sensor system during open (OKC) and closed (CKC) kinetic chain knee flexion-extension, underwent preprocessing (denoising, segmentation, normalization). Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) was used to isolate Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs), and Det

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral chondromalacia is a degenerative condition of the knee cartilage, leading to significant pain and functional impairment. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has emerged as a promising treatment, leveraging its regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of PRP in reducing pain and improving knee function in patients with patellofemoral chondromalacia at the six-month follow-up.
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at Almoosa Specialist Hospital in Al-Ahsa, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. Medical rec

PURPOSE: There is a paucity of information regarding the prevalence of focal chondromalacia with chronic dynamic scapholunate instability (CDSI), and current treatment algorithms do not account for its presence. We aimed to determine the prevalence and distribution of chondromalacia in CDSI.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, longitudinal, cohort study of all wrist arthroscopies performed from January 2008 to December 2020. We included wrists with an arthroscopically confirmed primary diagnosis of CDSI. Patients were grouped based on the presence (CDSI+C) or absence (CDSI-C) of focal carp

INTRODUCTION: Chondromalacia patella (CMP) is characterizsed by cartilage degeneration, affects young adults, more women (2:1) and is responsible for 75% of knee pain complaints in the active population. The etiology is multifactorial and may be related to extrinsic factors (trauma and burden) and intrinsic factors (patellar malalignment and quadriceps weakness). Isokinetic dynamometry (ID) can aid in the detection of the causal factors of knee pain related to CMP.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the parameters of the ID of individuals with and without CMP and correlate them with the clin

The inflammatory role of the infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) in cartilage damage has been well-documented, yet its potential protective function as a shock absorber remains underexplored. This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the IPFP size and chondromalacia patella (CP), while also examining the effects of age, sex, and body mass index (BMI). Magnetic resonance imaging scans from 311 patients aged 40 to 65 years were retrospectively analyzed. Axial sequences classified CP severity, and sagittal sequences measured IPFP areas. CP was graded according to the Int

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral joint chondral lesions (PFCLs) are one of the most common chronic knee problems in all populations in young adults. Despite their high frequency, there is still no consensus about treatment options. All PFCL grades can be treated with surgery, nonoperative treatment, or both.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to compare patients with PFCLs who underwent Fulkerson osteotomy surgery followed by physical therapy and rehabilitation with those patients who only received physical therapy and rehabilitation. It was hypothesized that patients who underwent u
