Chondromalacia as pathological finding in arthroscopy of the temporomandibular joint: A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe the arthroscopic findings of chondromalacia and its relation with the internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 161 patients (299 TMJs) who underwent arthroscopy were included in the study. The TMJs were evaluated objectively under arthroscopic vision, and 4 groups of patients were established according to the degree of involvement, degree I, II, III and IV. Statistical analyses were conducted using logistic regression models (P < 0.05). RESULTS: It was observed that 95 patients (59%) had

The efficacy of submucosal corticosteroid injection and dilatation in subglottic stenosis of different aetiology.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the long-term efficacy of submucosal corticosteroid injection plus dilatation for subglottic stenosis as a single modality treatment in granulomatosis with polyangiitis and relapsing polychondritis, as compared with idiopathic subglottic stenosis and traumatic subglottic stenosis. METHOD: Patients who underwent dilatation for autoimmune causes were identified. Corticosteroid injection into the submucosa of a stenotic segment was followed by serial dilatation. Definitive improvement was defined as good airway patency for more than 24 months with no further procedures ne

Biodegradable airway stents in infants - Potential life-threatening pitfalls.

OBJECTIVE: The solution of severe tracheobronchial obstructions in early childhood means a great challenge. Biodegradable stents were intended to be a minimally invasive temporary solution which may decrease the number of interventions and limit the possible complications of stenting procedures. However, our first experiences have brought out a new, - especially in childhood - potentially life-threatening complication of this concept. METHODS: Five SX-ELLA biodegradable polydioxanone stents was applied in three patients because of severe tracheobronchial obstruction: congenital tracheomalacia

Hereditary Multiple Exostoses: a review of clinical appearance and metabolic pattern.

Hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) is an inherited genetic condition characterized by the presence of multiple exostoses (osteochondromas). MHE is a relatively rare autosomal dominant disorder, mainly caused by loss of function mutations in two genes: exostosin-1 (EXT1) and exostosin-2 (EXT2). These genes are linked to heparan sulfate (HS) synthesis, but the specific molecular mechanism leading to the disruption of the cartilage structure and the consequent exostoses formation is still not resolved. The aim of this paper is to encounter the main aspects of HME reviewing the literature, in ord

SPINART study: validation of the extended magnetic resonance imaging scale for evaluation of joint status in adult patients with severe haemophilia A using baseline data.

INTRODUCTION: Most previous joint imaging scales for haemophilia have focused on earlier disease stages observed in younger patients. AIM: We sought to demonstrate that the 45-item extended magnetic resonance imaging (eMRI) scale is a valid instrument for measuring joint status in adults with severe haemophilia A. METHODS: Six scale categories (effusion/haemarthrosis, synovial hypertrophy, hemosiderin, erosion, subchondral cysts and cartilage loss) in two domains (soft tissue [range = 0-9] and osteochondral [range = 0-36]) were evaluated for each joint. eMRI scores were derived using baselin

Auricular ossification: A newly recognized feature of osteoprotegerin-deficiency juvenile Paget disease.

We report auricular ossification (AO) affecting the elastic cartilage of the ear as a newly recognized feature of osteoprotegerin (OPG)-deficiency juvenile Paget disease (JPD). AO and auricular calcification refer interchangeably to rigid pinnae, sparing the ear lobe, from various etiologies. JPD is a rare Mendelian disorder characterized by elevated serum alkaline phosphatase activity accompanied by skeletal pain and deformity from rapid bone turnover. Autosomal recessive transmission of loss-of-function mutations within TNFRSF11B encoding OPG accounts for most JPD (JPD1). JPD2 results from h

Does chondrolysis occur after corticosteroid-analgesic injections? An analysis of patients treated for adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder.

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies using continuous infusions of local anesthetics and basic science studies that model injections of local anesthetics have shown chondrotoxicity. However, clinical studies do not exist that have assessed for the risk of chondrolysis in nonarthritic joints exposed to single or intermittent corticosteroid or analgesic injections. Currently, there are no data available to guide the clinician on the safety of using these injections in clinical practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of patients treated for adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder with at lea

Rapid chondrolysis of the medial knee compartment after arthroscopic meniscal resection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Rapidly destructive osteoarthritis of the hip and rapid chondrolysis of the lateral compartment of the knee or the shoulder are rare, but have been previously described in the medical literature. To the best of our knowledge, no case of medial femorotibial compartment chondrolysis after arthroscopy has yet been described. We therefore submit the first case report. CASE PRESENTATION: A 64-year-old white European man presented with right knee pain due to a medial meniscal tear with no other abnormality found on examination or imaging. An arthroscopic partial medial meniscectomy was

An unusual case of chondrolysis of the hip: a possible etiology for a rare condition - a case report.

UNLABELLED: Idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip (ICH) is a rare condition of unknown etiology, and is characterized by rapid, progressive destruction of the articular cartilage in the coxofemoral joint. This condition has an insidious onset, and is observed more commonly in female preadolescents. Patients report intense pain, motion restriction, and often present with an antalgic gait. Medical imaging techniques are required to make a differential diagnosis and biological markers for inflammation and infection should be evaluated. Avascular necrosis, septic arthritis, and juvenile idiopathic ar

[Idiopatic chondrolysis of the hip. Long-term follow-up of a case].

Idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip is a very rare disease occurring during adolescence. Pain and limp are the most common symptoms and are a consequence of an accelerated loss of the articular cartilage with a lower range of move-ment producing rigidity in the last instance. The natural history is unpredictable and varies between complete and spon-taneous recovery and the ankylosis. The current recommended treatment is conservative, restricting the surgical option for residual stiffness. A clinical case of an eleven year old patient is presented. He consulted for a 2 year, torpid course of lef

Bilateral Idiopathic Chondrolysis of the Hip in an Adult: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip usually develops in adolescents and is a disease characterized by gradual degenerative changes of the hyaline cartilage surrounding the head of the femur. It eventually decreases the hip joint space and causes limitations in the hip joint range of motion due to pain. The authors had experienced an unusual case of bilateral idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip in an 54 year-old male; thus, we report the treatment results and literature reviews in this case report.

Late costal osteomyelitis with a cutaneous fistula after flame burns: a case report.

Chest wall defects are an unusual complication of burn injury, generally seen after high-voltage electrical burns. Here we report the case of a 57-year-old man who developed costal chondritis and osteomyelitis 23 months after flame injury, which covered 50% of the total body surface area. Management included the resection of two ribs and coverage with an omental flap, overlaid by a split-thickness skin graft during the same surgical procedure. Declaration of interest: The authors have no conflict of interest to declare.

A new MRI grading system for chondromalacia patellae.

Background Chondromalacia patellae is a very common disorder. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely used to investigate patellar cartilage lesions, there is no descriptive MRI-based grading system for chondromalacia patellae. Purpose To propose a new MRI grading system for chondromalacia patellae with corresponding high resolution images which might be useful in precisely reporting and comparing knee examinations in routine daily practice and used in predicting natural course and clinical outcome of the patellar cartilage lesions. Material and Methods High resolution fat-saturate

Association between trochlear morphology and chondromalacia patella: an MRI study.

This study aimed to compare trochlear morphology seen in magnetic resonance imaging between patients with chondromalacia patella and age-matched control patients without cartilage lesion. Trochlear morphology was evaluated using the lateral trochlear inclination, medial trochlear inclination, sulcus angle and trochlear angle on the axial magnetic resonance images. Consequently, an association between abnormal trochlear morphology and chondromalacia patella was identified in women. In particular, women with flattened lateral trochlea are at an increased risk of patellar cartilage structural dam
