Approach to mallet finger injury: Practical guide for Canadian primary care physicians.

OBJECTIVE: To provide primary care physicians with an evidence-based approach to recognizing and managing mallet finger injuries. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar using relevant key words and subject headings. Recommendations were categorized based on clinical evidence and expert opinion using a 3-level classification system. MAIN MESSAGE: A mallet finger injury commonly occurs after an axial load, resulting in avulsion of the extensor tendon from the distal phalanx. This may occur with or without an avulsion fracture. Diagnosis is made c

Evaluation of S-Value in relation to cochlear anatomy in pediatric cochlear implant users.

To assess the S-value in pediatric cochlear implant (CI) patients using high-resolution CT images and examine its correlation with main cochlear parameters and angular insertion depth (AID). A retrospective review of preoperative CT images from pediatric CI recipients with normal cochlear anatomy was conducted at a referral hearing implant center. Cases involving congenital or acquired inner-ear abnormalities were excluded. Two independent reviewers with equivalent expertise used OTOPLAN to measure the main cochlear parameters, and the interrater reliability study revealed good agreement. S-va

Association Between Nasal Septal Deviation and Estimated Pulmonary Artery Pressures-Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Nasal septal deviation (NSD) is a common cause of chronic upper airway obstruction (UAO), and surgical correction via nasal septoplasty results in improvements in airflow. Multiple studies have been conducted to assess possible relationships between chronic UAO (including due to NSD) and cardiorespiratory function (such as pulmonary artery pressures). The objective of this scoping review is to identify and examine the current evidence on the potential relationship between nasal septal deviation, estimated mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP), and estimated pulmonary artery systolic

Repairing Chronic Tendinous Mallet Finger by Brachioradialis Tendon-Bone Graft.

PURPOSE: The management of chronic tendinous mallet finger resulting from extensor tendon insertion rupture presents a considerable challenge. To our knowledge, this study describes a clinical technique using a brachioradialis tendon-bone graft to reconstruct the extensor apparatus. METHODS: Ten patients who remained unable to actively extend the distal interphalangeal joint despite nonsurgical treatment were included; of these, two demonstrated secondary swan-neck deformities. All patients demonstrated satisfactory passive range of motion in flexion and extension at the distal interphalangea

Cone-Beam CT of the Temporal Bone: Normative Linear Biometry of Inner Ear Structures.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Normative linear measurements of inner ear structures may enhance diagnostic accuracy in detecting subtle congenital abnormalities. This study aimed to establish Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)-based normative reference values for temporal bone anatomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed consecutive CBCT scans of normal temporal bones acquired between June 2022 and June 2024. Scans were classified as normal based on the absence of pathological findings and no history of otologic disorders. Eleven linear measurements of inner ear structures were ind

Finite element analysis of four different fixation methods for the treatment of ipsilateral femoral neck and shaft fractures.

BACKGROUND: Ipsilateral femoral neck and shaft fractures are severe injuries caused by high-energy trauma. In recent years, the incidence and discussion of such fractures have increased significantly. Research and literature on these fractures primarily consist of clinical retrospective analyses, meta-analyses, or case reports. Domestic and international studies have examined surgical timing, blood loss, complications, and healing duration across different treatment approaches for these fractures. Currently, no universally agreed-upon standard exists for managing such fractures in the literatu

Acute Poisoning-Induced Rhabdomyolysis and Related Complications: A Report of Two Cases.

Rhabdomyolysis following acute poisoning is a rare complication. Acute poisoning with profenofos, an organophosphorus insecticide that irreversibly inhibits acetylcholinesterase, and Super Vasmol 33, a hair dye containing para-phenylenediamine, is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Although rhabdomyolysis is an uncommon complication, it may precipitate acute kidney injury (AKI) and multiorgan dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Here, we report two cases of rhabdomyolysis following acute poisoning. The first case involved a 40-year-old nonalcoholic male admitted after self-ingestion

Dynamic Supraglottic Airway Collapse Diagnosed Using Airway Point-of-care Ultrasound: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Acquired idiopathic laryngomalacia causing dynamic airway collapse is rare in adolescents and may be overlooked because it mimics more common causes of acute dyspnoea and stridor in the emergency department (ED). Airway point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) provides a rapid, non-invasive means to visualize dynamic supraglottic obstruction when laryngoscopy is not immediately feasible or tolerated. CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old boy presented with sudden-onset respiratory distress and dyspnoea that worsened on lying flat and improved when sitting upright, without history of fever, trauma,

A Badge of Honor? Assessing Self-reported Experience with Cauliflower Ear and Interest in Reconstructive Surgery in 1,338 Former Wrestlers.

BACKGROUND: Cauliflower ear is a deformity caused by trauma, leading to a thickened external ear with indistinct cartilaginous features. Historically perceived as a "badge of honor" by athletes, it may also cause significant cosmetic, functional, and psychosocial challenges. This study aims to elucidate the functional and psychosocial burden of cauliflower ear and evaluate awareness and interest in reconstruction. METHODS: An anonymous survey was distributed by e-mail via REDCap to members of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). Demographic information, history of cauliflower ea

Auricular hematoma in antiquity: Possible surgical drainage in the hellenistic boxer at rest.

Injuries of the external ear caused by blunt trauma are among the most characteristic lesions of contact sports and have likely accompanied athletic competition since antiquity. Auricular hematoma is a well-recognized consequence of blunt trauma to the external ear and remains a common injury in modern contact sports. If untreated, subperichondrial blood accumulation may lead to cartilage ischemia and permanent auricular deformity, commonly known as cauliflower ear. Evidence of this condition may already appear in ancient artistic representations.1,2 The Hellenistic bronze statue known as the

A Multistep Registration Framework for Multimodal Histology Across Same and Consecutive Sections.

Multimodal digital pathology combines hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining with advanced microscopy techniques to provide complementary structural and molecular information. However, accurate registration between H&E and other modalities remains challenging, especially when images differ strongly in appearance or are acquired on nonidentical consecutive sections. We present a multistep multimodal registration workflow that combines a multiscale histogram of local main orientations (MS-HLMO), a multimodal feature-based rigid initialization, with B-spline nonrigid registration and thin-plate spl

Simple Auricular Hematoma ("Cauliflower Ear") Task Trainer.

AUDIENCE: This auricular hematoma task trainer is designed to instruct emergency medicine (EM) residents, fellows, and medical students. Otolaryngology trainees may also benefit from this simulator. INTRODUCTION: Auricular hematomas are relatively infrequent but require timely intervention to prevent complications such as infection, cartilage necrosis, or permanent ear deformity ("cauliflower ear").1 Although these injuries make up only a small part of all otologic complaints in the emergency department, they are one of the most frequent ear injuries in contact sports, with wrestlers, boxers,

Improving Foot Rocker via Robot-Resisted Gait Training With Self-Awareness Biofeedback in Adults With Cerebral Palsy.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive neurological disorder that impairs motor control and coordination due to brain injury or abnormalities before, during, or shortly after birth. Although robotic gait training can improve overall gait patterns in CP, interventions targeting the 'foot rockers' motion, essential for stable weight transfer and effective push-off, have received limited attention. In this study, five adults with CP were recruited to train on a robotic treadmill system in which controlled downward forces were applied to the pelvis during walking, promoting implicit motor learni

Progressive Acquired Cervical Deformity With Myelopathy Managed by Occipitocervicothoracic Fusion: A Case Report.

Progressive cervical myelopathy associated with acquired cervical deformity is uncommon and presents substantial diagnostic and surgical challenges, particularly when the deformity is rigid and complicated by anomalous vascular anatomy. Severe focal stenosis at the apex of cervical kyphosis and segmental autofusion may increase the risk of neurologic injury during decompression and hinder deformity correction.  We report the case of a 55-year-old woman with progressive cervical myelopathy in the setting of an acquired cervical kyphoscoliosis. Although no definitive traumatic event was identifi
