Effects of hardness and dimension of pinna and auricular hematoma on detection threshold of cartilage conduction.

In cartilage conduction (CC), a vibrator is presented onto the cartilage of the ear instead of the bony parts of the head used in ordinary bone conduction (BC). Because the auricle cartilage is softer and lighter than the bone, it doesn't require as much pressure as BC, which may cause discomfort (or pain) in the area where a BC transducer is being pressed. However, CC is a relatively new technology, and whether the less dense characteristics of cartilage, which varies from person to person, result in a better sound perception is still being studied. In this paper, we focused on investigating

"Hole-Punch" Technique for Recurrent Auricular Hematomas.

Effective treatment of auricular hematomas can be a challenging problem for both the otolaryngologist and the patient. Recurrence rates are high even with proper drainage and bolstering. The hole-punch technique is a powerful tool to address the difficult problem of recurrent auricular hematomas and avoid disfiguring deformities of the ear. Laryngoscope, 133:814-817, 2023.

Ear magnetic discs to prevent cauliflower ear: a case gone wrong.

We present a case of pinna pressure necrosis secondary to the use of ear magnetic discs, used in the management of auricular haematoma. A man in his 20s sustained a left auricular haematoma while wrestling. His coach aspirated the haematoma and advised the use of commercially available compression magnets on either side of the pinna to prevent haematoma reaccumulation. 5 days later, he presented to accident and emergency with left ear pain and swelling. Perichondritis was evident on examination and the compression magnets were removed to reveal significant pressure necrosis of the pinna. The s

Auricular haematoma an avoidable cosmetic deformity: A chance or negligence.

PURPOSE: This study highlights the importance of immediate intervention needed in cases of auricular trauma cases so as to prevents complications leading to cauliflower ear, loss of cartilage, necrosis. MATERIALS & METHODS: Total 10 cases of primary haematoma & recurrent cases were included in the study. A detailed history was entered in proforma. Procedure was done under local anaesthesia with all aseptic precautions. A cruciate incision was given over the most dependent part of the swelling and flaps were raised. The collection was drained and the under surface of the flap was scraped using

Preventing Cauliflower Ear.

Traumatic auricular hematomas may be encountered in emergency care settings due to blunt trauma such as assaults or contact sports. Emergency nurse practitioners should be able to recognize and treat this injury to prevent complications. Treatment usually consists of evacuation of the hematoma by aspiration or incision and drainage using local or regional anesthesia, followed by the application of a pressure dressing or suturing. Without proper evacuation and steps to prevent reaccumulation, tissue necrosis and deformity (i.e., cauliflower ear) may occur.

Management of an Inappropriately Treated Case of Auricular Hematoma.

Othematoma is a condition in which blood collects beneath the perichondral layer of the pinna. Recurrent auricular hematoma can be a challenging medical problem, with complications resulting in ear deformity, therefore, appropriate management is important. Improper treatment can result in a deformity known as 'cauliflower ear' or 'wrestler's ear.' We report a case of othematoma that was inappropriately treated and present a review of current treatment options.

Tracing the Origins of "Cauliflower Ear" and Its Earlier Names over Two Millenia.

OBJECTIVES: The post-traumatic ear deformity, known today as cauliflower ear, has been described since antiquity. It has long been associated with pugilistic sports (wrestling, boxing) as well as among the mentally ill. The aim of this study is to present the various terms used since antiquity to describe these traumatic deformations of the auricle and to trace the origin of the modern moniker "cauliflower ear." METHODS: Historical study, only based on original documentation accessed through personal libraries and universities repositories, completed with online sources and etymological dicti

Cauliflower ear among Finnish high-level male wrestlers and judokas is prevalent and symptomatic deformity.

Our research aimed to study the prevalence, concerns, and treatment practices related to cauliflower ear among Finnish wrestlers and judokas. In total, 32 Finnish wrestlers and 31 judokas completed a questionnaire at training sessions or at a competition. All participants were adults competing at the national or international levels. We also took lateral digital photographs of participants' ears. A senior author graded the overall appearance of the auricles on a scale from 0 to 5 (0 = normal auricle, 5 = extreme cauliflower ear). Cauliflower ear was more prevalent among male athletes (84%, 46/

Cauliflower ear - a minimally invasive treatment method in a wrestling athlete: a case report.

Acute auricular hematoma can be caused by direct blunt trauma or other injury to the external ear. It is typically seen in those who practice full contact sports such as boxing, wrestling, and rugby. "Cauliflower ear" deformity, fibrocartilage formation during scarring, is a common complication of auricular hematomas. Therefore, acute drainage of the hematoma and postprocedural techniques for preventing recurrence are necessary for preventing the deformity. There are many techniques although no superior method of treatment has been found. In this case report, we describe a novel method using n

Treating Scars in the Auricle Region.

This article provides a review of the surgical and nonsurgical options available to manage a variety of auricular scars. The basics of wound healing are discussed in addition to the etiology of keloids and the cauliflower ear. Many auricular scars can be revised with scar excision techniques, but separate discussions for the treatment of keloids and the cauliflower ear are provided. The management plan for auricular scarring requires appropriate patient counseling regarding the risk of recurrence in keloids, regrowth of scar tissue in cauliflower ears, scar hypertrophy at the line of closure,

Auricular haematoma.

Auricular haematomas typically occur as a result of the auricle being pulled or subjected to blunt trauma in association with contact sports, accidents or violence. An auricular haematoma requires prompt surgical intervention to avoid cauliflower ear, also known as «wrestler’s ear». A cauliflower ear is a permanent deformity made up of connective tissue and cartilage.

Saddle-nose and bilateral cauliflower ear deformities with pyoderma gangrenosum-like ulcers, cavitary pulmonary lesions, digital gangrene and pulselessness in a young female.

We report a young female who presented with saddle-nose and bilateral cauliflower ear deformities along with pyoderma gangrenosum-like ulcers, digital gangrene and pulselessness. Subsequently, she was found to have bilateral conductive hearing loss, a corneal opacity, mild aortic regurgitation and radiological evidence of cavitary changes in lungs and aortoarteritis. Our patient had a constellation of symptoms which posed a diagnostic challenge. Finally, a diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis with several unusual features was made. Ear Scaffold Reconstruction Using Ultrasonic Aspirator for Cauliflower Ear.

Untreated auricular hematomas from ear trauma can result in an ear deformation known as cauliflower ear, secondary to fibrosis and new cartilage overgrowth. Cauliflower ear reconstruction has traditionally utilized tools such as a drill or a scalpel in order to improve auricular cosmesis. We present a case report utilizing an ultrasonic aspirator to recontour the fibrosed cartilage of a cauliflower ear. The ultrasonic aspirator has advantages over traditional tools in its ability to provide finely controlled bone removal without damage to surrounding soft tissue. The patient in this case repor

Unilateral Cauliflower Ear due to Leprosy or Trauma - A Diagnostic Challenge.

The terminology Cauliflower ear refers to the appearance of external ear, sequelae to underlying primary inflammation/infection. Trauma and secondary infection or perichondritis being the most common cause of cauliflower ear, this article describes a case of unilateral cauliflower ear due to multibacillary leprosy. This case shows the importance of skin smears and the histopathological identification and classification of leprosy patients with unusual lesions.
