Association Between Hearing Loss And Cauliflower Ear in Wrestlers, a Case Control Study Employing Hearing Tests.

BACKGROUND: According to anecdotal findings, some wrestling coaches and wrestlers believe that cauliflower ear might lead to hearing loss. Our preliminary study showed that the prevalence of hearing loss reported by the wrestlers with cauliflower ear is significantly higher than this rate among wrestlers without cauliflower ear. To the best of our knowledge, no other study has confirmed this finding employing hearing tests. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and to compare the prevalence of hearing loss among wrestlers with and without cauliflower ears employing hearing tests. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The

Evaluating ear cartilage piercing practices in London, UK.

BACKGROUND: Ear cartilage piercing is increasingly popular and has a significant complication rate. Contrary to popular belief, there are no minimum qualifications required to practice ear piercing. This study evaluated ear cartilage piercing practices in London, UK. METHOD: Practitioners at 25 piercing parlours completed a telephone questionnaire assessing piercing practice. RESULTS: Ninety-six per cent of practitioners were aware of the risk of infection post-piercing. Four per cent, 12 per cent and 0 per cent of practitioners were aware of keloid scarring, hypertrophic scarring and caulif

Cauliflower ear dissection.

Cauliflower ear (CE) is caused by repeated direct trauma to the external ear. Surgical correction of an established CE is one of the most challenging problems in ear reconstruction. However, no reports have clarified the dissection of an established CE in detail. In this report, the dissection of a CE is described based on macroscopic, microscopic and imaging features.

High ear-piercing: an increasingly popular procedure with serious complications. Is good clinical practice exercised?

This study aimed to explore the current practice of performing high ear-piercing regarding consent protocols, and methods of practice using questionnaire-based survey in Hertfordshire and North London. Recommendations for good clinical practice are also made. 100 establishments performing ear piercing were identified. A 16-item questionnaire on techniques used, methods of high-ear piercing, methods of sterilization, consent issues and aftercare was completed. Seventy-six establishments agreed to participate. All practitioners prepared the skin before piercing. 58 (76%) used a needle for pierci

Management of auricular hematoma and the cauliflower ear.

Acute auricular hematoma is common after blunt trauma to the side of the head. A network of vessels provides a rich blood supply to the ear, and the ear cartilage receives its nutrients from the overlying perichondrium. Prompt management of hematoma includes drainage and prevention of reaccumulation. If left untreated, an auricular hematoma can result in complications such as perichondritis, infection, and necrosis. Cauliflower ear may result from long-standing loss of blood supply to the ear cartilage and formation of neocartilage from disrupted perichondrium. Management of cauliflower ear in

Auricular hematoma and cauliflower deformation of the ear: from art to medicine.

Auricular hematoma and cauliflower deformation of the ear are unique in several respects. Knowledge about it began, in antiquity, through artists, particularly Greek and Roman, and then Japanese in the 18th century with their representation of cauliflower deformation of the ear on sculptures and paintings of pugilists and wrestlers. It is only in the 19th century that physicians began to make substantive progress in understanding this abnormality. It was first thought to be associated with mental disease, but by the beginning of the 20th century, its etiology was recognized as being caused by

A novel technique for treating auricular hematomas in mixed martial artists (ultimate fighters).

PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe a "bolsterless" technique for managing auricular hematomas in professional fighters. METHODS: Eight auricular hematomas were drained under local anesthesia by incising along an anatomical auricular crease. After evacuation of the hematoma and copious irrigation, the resultant skin flap was replaced in anatomical position, and through-and-through absorbable mattress sutures were used to secure the flap in place. Incision sites were left open and dressed with antimicrobial ointment. No bolsters were placed. The patients were given 1 week of oral antibiotic

Effective, simple treatment for perichondritis and pinna haematoma.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a new treatment for perichondritis and haematoma of the pinna. At present, the existing treatment for these conditions is initially medical (which usually fails), followed by surgery (incision, drainage and compression to prevent recurrence) with accompanying medical management. However, the result is often a failure, resulting in partial or complete 'cauliflower ear' deformity. PROCEDURE: The described treatment involves draining the site of infection and irrigating with streptomycin solution. The cavity is then filled with a solution of streptomycin, hyaluronidase and

Cauliflower Ear and Skin Infections among Wrestlers in Tehran.

The purpose of the study was to describe the magnitude of the selected sports medicine problems (i.e. cauliflower ear and skin infections) among wrestlers in Tehran. A number of 411 wrestlers were randomly selected from wrestling clubs in Tehran employing cluster sample setting method. The participants were interviewed using a specially designed and validated questionnaire. Nearly half of the participants (44%) had "cauliflower ears". Only 23% of these participants had received any kind of treatment for their acute ear haematomas that are known to result in "cauliflower ears". The prevalence o

Relapsing polychondritis.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare disease most commonly presenting as inflammation of the cartilage of the ears and nose. Auricular chondritis, with red ears resembling infectious cellulitis, is the most common initial finding. Antibodies to type II collagen in cartilage are found, and the earlobes are classically spared. Chronic disease may result in a flabby, droopy ear, cauliflower ear, or saddle nose deformity. Acute involvement of the tracheal cartilage may cause collapse of the airway with obstruction and pulmonary infections. Arthritis may be oligoarticular or polyarticular, most often

Case presentation: a novel way of treating acute cauliflower ear in a professional rugby player.

Acute auricular haematoma is a common problem in rugby players and can be difficult to treat due to re-accumulation of the fluid and can subsequently cause the unsightly cauliflower ear. We present a case of auricular haematoma affecting the central part of the pinna in a professional rugby player. This was treated successfully by aspiration and the use of silicone splints which allowed the player to continue training and competing.

Rethinking auricular trauma.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: An unrecognized auricular hematoma can lead to a disfiguring deformity, the cauliflower ear, but it can be prevented with prompt and comprehensive management. Fine needle aspiration with pressure bandages remains the mainstay treatment but will occasionally fail. We review our experience with recurrent or recalcitrant auricular hematomas in terms of their pathophysiology and revision surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. METHODS: A review of patients undergoing surgical incision, drainage, and debridement secondary to recurrent auricular hematomas was cond

Interventions for acute auricular haematoma.

BACKGROUND: Acute haematoma of the pinna is a condition where a collection of blood forms beneath the perichondrial layer of the pinna. It is usually caused by blunt trauma, and if untreated will ultimately result in a deformity commonly known as 'cauliflower ear' or 'wrestler's ear'. Various treatments are employed to relieve the haematoma but no clear consensus exists on the best way to do so in order to produce the best cosmetic result with the least permanent deformity. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of treatment options in acute auricular haematoma. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched

Bilateral cauliflower ear deformity: an unusual presentation of cutaneous Rosai-Dorfman disease.

This case illustrates the variety of clinical presentations of Rosai-Dorfman disease. In this case, the disease presented as bilateral cauliflower ear deformity and was diagnosed on the basis of typical pathological findings. Although the cause of this disease is not fully understood, it is hoped that, with increased awareness and the identification of more cases, more questions may be answered with respect to this interesting condition that was so elegantly described by Rosai and Dorfman more than three decades ago.
