Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a devastating condition characterized by the disruption of vascular supply, progressive bone degeneration, and eventual collapse of the femoral head. While corticosteroid- and alcohol-induced ONFH models are well established, a reliable trauma-induced ONFH model in mice has not been previously described. However, traumatic ONFH is commonly seen in clinical settings-such as following FN fracture, dislocation, or hip trauma-but remains poorly understood at the mechanistic level due to a lack of appropriate small-animal models. To address this gap, we e

Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) most commonly affect elderly, osteoporotic women, although younger patients sustain them through high-energy trauma. Both incidence and the associated healthcare burden continue to rise with demographic ageing. Non-operative management is preferred for undisplaced fractures and for many elderly patients, whereas a range of internal fixation methods and arthroplasty options are available for more complex injuries. Patient age, comorbidities, functional demands and fracture pattern are the primary determinants of treatment selection, implant choice and expected

Intrathoracic rib fixation represents a technical innovation with advantages over traditional methods through minimally invasive approach. We present the first South American case in a 21-year-old patient with flail chest from polytrauma. Four intrathoracic fixation plates (two 90 mm anterior and two 60 mm posterior) were used through video-assisted anterolateral and posterior approaches. The technique facilitates reduction through guide cables, intrathoracic positioning with minimal muscular disruption and automatic adaptation to costal anatomy. Total surgical time was 155 minutes with 250 mL

INTRODUCTION: Distal radius fractures are a common injury in adults, and surgical treatment frequently consists of open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) with a volar plate and screws. Uncommonly, heterotopic ossification (HO) may form as a result of inflammation secondary to trauma in the wrist, and once formed, surgical excision is the only effective treatment.
CASE REPORT: A healthy 57-year-old male presents with thumb pain and decreased range of motion 2 years postoperatively of a distal radius ORIF with notable dorsal comminution. Physical examination was significant for pain, weakness,

AIMS: The aim of this study was to externally validate the European Bone & Joint Infection Society (EBJIS) recommendations for the use of debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) in the treatment of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), examining the independent associations of the selection of patients and the operative technique with failure after DAIR.
METHODS: This was a multicentre retrospective cohort study involving seven UK hospitals and including adults with hip or knee PJI treated with DAIR. Patients were classified by EBJIS recommendations (DAIR-indicated, risk factor

➢ Osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT) are common injuries that remain difficult to treat because of the challenge of restoring durable hyaline cartilage. Surgical outcomes are influenced by lesion size and morphology, cartilage integrity, subchondral bone involvement, and ankle stability, all of which should be considered when evaluating operative strategies.➢ Fragment fixation preserves the native osteochondral unit in lesions with a viable fragment and is primarily indicated in acute OLT. Lift-drill-fill-fix is utilized in selected chronic lesions with a salvageable fragment and comprom

This study evaluates the real-world effectiveness and safety of a standardized enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathway in patients undergoing single-level microsurgical oblique lateral interbody fusion (MIS-OLIF) for lumbar degenerative disease. This retrospective before-and-after cohort study included 89 patients who underwent single-level MIS-OLIF at L3-4 or L4-5 between January 2021 and December 2023. Patients were categorized according to the institutional perioperative pathway in effect at the time of surgery: conventional care (n = 44) or ERAS (n = 45). The primary outcome was pos

OBJECTIVE: Minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MI-TLIF) is widely used to treat degenerative lumbar spine conditions, offering reduced tissue trauma, faster recovery, and lower complication rates compared to those with open TLIF. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) can enhance fusion and is often used in the interbody space in minimally invasive fusions because of the limited posterolateral surface area for arthrodesis, but it is associated with higher costs and an increased risk of complications. Authors of this study evaluated the outcomes of MI-TL

BACKGROUND: Arthrodesis of the elbow is a rarely performed procedure sometimes considered when no other reliable surgical solutions exist. Most published reports are limited to single case reports or very small series. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes and complications of patients who underwent elbow arthrodesis and to determine whether this is a worthwhile salvage procedure for elbows not amendable to surgical reconstruction or arthroplasty.
METHODS: Between 2000 and 2024, a retrospective review was performed of 13 elbows (13 patients) that underwent elbow arthrodesis a

High-energy bicondylar tibial plateau fractures of Schatzker types V and VI are conventionally managed, after open reduction and internal fixation, with 6-12 weeks of restricted weight-bearing, out of concern for loss of reduction and articular collapse. Emerging evidence questions whether this restriction is necessary. Reports of immediate weight-bearing specifically after fixation of these most unstable bicondylar patterns remain scarce, as most comparative studies pool this subtype within mixed cohorts. We present three consecutive patients (two men and one woman; mean age: 54 years; all of

BACKGROUND: Following radial-sided lateral exposure for interphalangeal silicone arthroplasty, the repaired radial collateral ligament must maintain coronal stability against postoperative ulnar drift. Prospective direction-specific alignment data are limited.
METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing proximal interphalangeal (PIP) or distal interphalangeal (DIP) silicone arthroplasty through a radial-sided lateral approach with structured collateral ligament repair were prospectively enrolled (minimum follow-up, 12 months). The primary outcome was signed coronal-plane deviation on standardize

Management of partial and complete digit amputations is guided by injury characteristics, patient comorbidities, and functional prognosis; however, congenital hand differences and disability remain underexplored in current literature. We present a 47-year-old congenitally blind patient with tetramelic monodactyly who sustained a near-complete zone II amputation of his only left digit following a dog bite, with associated metacarpal head destruction. Despite relative contraindication conferred by the mechanism of injury, the patient had profound reliance on his digit for independence; as such,

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive overview of costs and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) associated with three treatment modalities for common displaced distal radius fractures (DRFs): (1) non-operative treatment, (2) direct plate fixation and (3) delayed plate fixation in case of fracture redisplacement during follow-up.
METHODS: A cost and HRQoL analysis was performed based on data collected during the CAST study, a multicenter cluster-randomized controlled trial including adult patients with a displaced DRF, randomized between immobilization with a plaster

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Pilon fractures are rare but severe injuries associated with high-energy trauma, often resulting in significant articular and soft tissue damage. Their management is challenging due to complications such as infection, nonunion, and post-traumatic arthritis, which often require complex staged surgical interventions. Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS), a life-threatening reaction characterised by rash and systemic involvement, presents additional challenges in orthopaedic contexts due to its association with high-dose corticosteroid therapy and increased infection

Bone age and regional skeletal maturity staging are widely used to identify growth stage, estimate remaining growth, and support orthopedic treatment decisions in children and adolescents. However, skeletal maturity indicators differ in the regions examined, developmental features observed, scoring rules applied, and reference standards used. Consequently, the same child may receive different age estimates or maturity classifications when a different bone group, anatomical region, imaging modality, or assessment method is selected. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from within-image b

This case report describes the occurrence of soft tissue sarcoma at the surgical site of partial tarsal arthrodesis in 2 dogs within 8 mo after surgery. Surgical correction was uncomplicated in both cases, and the dogs did clinically well postoperatively, until masses were noted over the surgical sites. Each dog underwent amputation of the affected leg, as the masses were deemed unresectable. This report describes an uncommon potential complication of partial tarsal arthrodesis in dogs. Key clinical message: The cases reported herein are apparently the first descriptions of soft tissue sarcoma

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures are among the most common surgically treated upper-extremity fractures, and volar locking plate fixation is the predominant operative technique. Although perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis is widely used in orthopaedic surgery, procedure-specific evidence for closed distal radius fractures remains limited. Contemporary data regarding postoperative infection rates and antibiotic prophylaxis practice following volar locking plate fixation are scarce. The aim of this study was to describe postoperative infection rates following volar locking plate fixation of

BACKGROUND: Acetabular fractures in the elderly present unique challenges due to osteoporotic bone, comminution, and frequent involvement of the quadrilateral surface (QLS) and anterior column. Conventional fixation often fails in this population, leading to hardware complications and secondary displacement. This prospective pilot study evaluates the clinical and radiological outcomes of a novel stacked double-plate technique combined with QLS buttress screws in geriatric patients.
METHODS: Twelve consecutive patients aged ≥ 70 years with displaced acetabular fractures involving the anterior
