Delayed hypersensitivity to mumps was examined in 25 apparently well-nourished men receiving regular hemodialysis, each of whom had a history of mumps. A positive reaction was observed in eight of nine patients already under therapy with zinc added to the dialysis bath. In contrast, 11 of 16 untreated patients were anergic. Four of the anergic patients were subsequently treated with zinc resulting in restoration of sensitivity in three patients. Reliable information on acute viral infections of the central nervous system (CNS) in Canadian children has not been available. To investigation this disease in Halifax the medical records of 180 patients with presumed or definite acute viral CNS infection diagnosed at the Izaak Walton Killam Hospital for Children over an 8-year period were reviewed. Mumps antibody response and the development of cell-mediated immunity (CMI) to mumps antigen as assayed by the lymphocyte blast transformation method were studied after immunization with an inactivated mumps vaccine in seven sero-negative and ten sero-positive subjects. The transformation response of peripheral blood lymphocytes to mumps antigen generally appeared by 20 weeks post vaccination and reached levels found in sero-positive subjects years after mumps infection. There was no clear-cut correlation between the magnitude of blast transformation and antibody responses.

The responses to dermal antigen testing to a variety of antigens were measured in patients on regular dialysis. Forty-eight patients have received renal allografts and graft survival was assessed at 6 months. In summary, the effective treatment of certain disorders of male infertility is possible. As in all areas of medicine, the more specific the diagnosis, the more specific the treatment, and, as expected, the greater the success of treatment. Much of the confusion regarding the efficacy of the medical treatment of infertility has been generated by the use of empiric treatment modalities without thorough diagnostic evaluation. Further advances in knowledge pertaining to the mechanism of infertility should increase the precision of our forms of treatment, thus producing increased rates of success.

Two sisters, ages 16 and 17, presented with secondary amenorrhea. In addition, primary ovarian failure, gonadal dysgenesis, and normal karyotypes were demonstrated.
