The risk of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura after first and second measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine doses in children born in England 2000-2019.

We assessed the risk of Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) after Measles Mumps Rubella vaccine (MMR) doses 1 and 2 in children in England born from 2000 to 2019. After linking hospitalised ITP episodes to MMR vaccine records, we used the self-control case-series method to assess the relative incidence in the 6-week period post vaccination. We also assessed the risk of ITP after dose 2 in those who had ITP after dose 1. We found an increased risk of ITP after dose 1 (relative incidence 2.38 (95% CI: 2.12-2.67)) with an attributable risk of 1 in 42,900 doses. We found no evidence of an in

Whole-genome analysis of mumps virus genotype F in Shandong, China (2006-2018).

INTRODUCTION: Despite the introduction of mumps-containing vaccines into the routine immunization program in 2008, mumps incidence in Shandong Province, China, declined but remained substantially higher than that of measles and rubella, and above WHO elimination thresholds, raising the possibility of whether genetic evolution of circulating strains has contributed to this phenomenon. To address, we compared mumps viruses isolated pre-vaccine (2006-2007) and a decade after rollout (2018). METHODS: We analyzed mumps case data reported in Shandong from 2005 to 2024. We also performed whole-genom

Reasons for Childhood Vaccine Refusal: A Cross-Sectional Study in South-Eastern Türkiye.

Background/Objectives: Vaccine hesitancy has intensified worldwide, and measles and pertussis have resurged across the WHO European Region. In Türkiye, a regulation introduced in May 2024 made documentation of every parental refusal mandatory, rendering 2025 the first calendar year for which provincial refusal data can be considered systematically ascertained. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, registry-based cross-sectional study of all vaccine refusal notifications submitted to the Batman Provincial Health Directorate between 1 January and 31 December 2025, covering all six districts of

Waning Measles Immunity and Sustained Rubella Seroprotection Among Adults in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Background and Objectives: Despite long-standing MMR vaccination programmes, outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases continue to occur worldwide, raising concerns regarding waning immunity and susceptibility gaps in adult populations. Between 2017 and 2019 alone, WHO reported over 880,000 measles cases globally-a fourfold increase over the preceding two years-with outbreaks in both low- and high-income countries despite high childhood vaccination coverage. This study evaluated the seroepidemiology of measles, mumps, and rubella among adults in Türkiye over a nine-year period. Materials and M

Flexible and Interpretable Modeling of Overlapping Exposure Risks in Self-Controlled Case Series Analysis.

The self-controlled case series (SCCS) method is frequently employed to explore the relationship between transient exposures and subsequent health events, utilizing data from individuals who have experienced the event of interest. Conventional spline-based SCCS models typically do not account for overlapping exposure periods and fail to accommodate complex interactive effects among multiple exposures. In this paper, we introduce a novel semiparametric SCCS method that employs a functional partial-linear single index (PLSI) link function, allowing for the estimation of overlapping exposure risk

Measles and Rubella Immunity Profile of Healthcare Workers in Bulgaria: A Cross-Sectional Study.

UNLABELLED: Healthcare workers (HCWs) and medical providers are regularly exposed to a wide range of infectious diseases in the course of their duties. This occupational risk is significant in the context of highly contagious infections such as measles, which can spread rapidly in healthcare institutions. This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of protective anti-measles and anti-rubella IgG antibodies and factors influencing immunity among HCWs across all 28 districts in Bulgaria. METHODS: A total of 1854 individuals, including 540 (29%) doctors and 1314 (71%) medical specialists from

Beyond Strength: Toughening Bioactive Ceramics for Functional Bone Repair.

Apoptosis has an essential function in maintaining the integrity of the gastrointestinal mucosa. Its deregulation is associated with the occurrence of lesions such as in atrophic gastritis, peptic ulcers, intestinal metaplasia, and stomach tumorigenesis. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the frequency of apoptotic cells (apoptotic index, AI) by using two different immunohistochemical techniques, TUNEL and anti-activated caspase-3 antibody (CPP32), in gastric dyspepsia [chronic gastritis (CG, N = 34), chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG, N = 11), gastric ulcer (GU, N = 17), and

Mumps disease and vaccination in Africa: A scoping review.

Mumps, though often self-limiting, can cause serious complications such as meningitis, orchitis, infertility, deafness, and seizures. Despite rising cases in Africa, most countries do not vaccinate against mumps. This review compiled available evidence on mumps in Africa, focusing on morbidity, mortality, vaccine safety, transmission, and molecular characterization. A systematic search across major databases identified 22 relevant studies published between 1994 and 2024. Nearly half of the studies (45%; n = 10/22) were published in the most recent period (2018-2024), indicating increased resea

Human neutralizing antibodies targeting the measles virus hemagglutinin and fusion surface proteins.

Measles virus (MeV), a highly transmissible paramyxovirus, can cause severe complications and death, particularly in infants and young children. How and where human antibodies target and neutralize MeV remain unclear. Here, we report a panel of human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific for MeV hemagglutinin (H) and fusion (F) surface proteins, derived from the memory B cells of a Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccinee. We mapped four and five major epitope clusters on H and F, respectively, and structurally characterized representative mAbs from each epitope cluster. MAbs against both H and F

Estimates of vaccine effectiveness against measles and mumps: 14 years follow-up of a large cohort in Wales, UK.

BACKGROUND: Uptake of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine in Wales is high. However, sporadic measles cases still occur and there are large mumps outbreaks every few years. In this study, the long-term vaccine effectiveness (VE) of vaccines containing measles and mumps is assessed. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 822 116 individuals aged 1-30 years were followed up between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2020. Welsh Demographic Service data were linked to vaccination status from the national vaccination register and primary care records. Outcomes were identified by linking to laboratory confi

Post‑vaccination Acute Pancreatitis in an Infant: A Report of a Rare Case and Brief Literature Review.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is increasingly recognized in the pediatric population, although it remains uncommon in infants and young children. In this age group, diagnosis is often delayed because clinical manifestations, such as irritability, vomiting, and feeding intolerance, are nonspecific and may occur in the absence of classic abdominal pain. Most pediatric cases are mild and self‑limiting; however, severity can range from mild to severe depending on the presence and duration of organ dysfunction and the development of local or systemic complications at presentation.  A wide spectrum of eti

MMR Vaccination and Hen's Egg Allergy: Bridging the Gap Between Evidence and Clinical Practice.

Background: Measles has re-emerged in recent years as a public health concern in the context of insufficient vaccination coverage. Some children experience significant delays in receiving, or refuse to take, the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination, often due to concerns related to hen's egg allergy (HEA). Methods: In this study, we retrospectively assessed the safety of MMR vaccination (Priorix®, GlaxoSmithKline, Belgium) in patients with HEA hospitalised at our clinic. Detailed medical histories were collected, along with skin prick tests and measurements of specific IgE against milk

Two novel kindreds with autosomal recessive STAT2 deficiency.

STAT2 is a transcription factor in the type I/III interferon (IFN) antiviral response. Autosomal recessive STAT2 deficiency, reported in 12 kindreds from nine countries, underlies severe viral infections and hyperinflammation. We report three patients from two kindreds from Portugal and Algeria, respectively, with novel homozygous STAT2 mutations. The three patients developed complications following live attenuated measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in one patient, who responded to treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG), steroids,

Clinical progress note: Mumps.

Mumps was a common childhood viral illness before the implementation of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination in 1967. There was a significant decrease in mumps cases in the postvaccine era; however, there has been an increase in outbreaks in the United States over the past two decades. Complications of mumps can lead to hospitalization and require a high index of suspicion to diagnose. Early recognition and adequate infection control measures are imperative in outbreak management. Additional studies to inform public health guidelines are needed, including data on the efficacy of a

Measles: A Global Public Health Emergency!

Measles is a highly contagious vaccine-preventable disease that was once controlled with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccinations but has reemerged in the United States and globally as a public health emergency. Despite availability of a safe and effective vaccine, declining vaccination rates driven by vaccine hesitancy, access issues, and clustering of unvaccinated individuals have led to measles outbreaks. Since January 2026 in the United States, both the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC; 1,654 cases) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC; 1,671 cases) have reported a high number
